Falcons Stare Down History… Again
Claiming another pair of sweeps last week against Eastern Michigan, the Falcons will enter Tuesday's match on the brink of history once again. With a 15-0 record, this edition of the BGSU Volleyball program has tied what is believed to be the best start in the history of BGSU Athletics, matching the 15-0 start by the 1964 men's tennis team. If the Falcons can capture another win, they would set the record for the best start in BGSU Athletics history while also closing in on the program record for most consecutive wins.Â
Battle Of I-75Â
The Falcons' opponent in the Battle of I-75 will enter the first match of the home-and-home series with a 3-10 record. The last win for the Rockets was a 3-0 result against Eastern Michigan with the other two being a 3-0 final against Northern Illinois followed by a five-set match with Ball State. With their last win being against EMU, they will enter the match against the Falcons riding a three-match losing streak, dropping one to Miami in three sets followed by a four-setter and then a five-setter against Central Michigan, all in the past week.Â
For The First Time Since … Â
For the first time since the 1964 men's tennis team, a BGSU program has reached 15-0 to begin a season. With the two wins over Eastern Michigan, the Falcons reached the 15-0 mark, becoming what is believed to be just the second team in the history of BGSU Athletics to do so. Now, the record to watch for the Falcons will be the volleyball program's all-time consecutive win streak, set at 17 matches during the 2006 campaign.Â
Among The Nation's BestÂ
Just two teams in the country hold a better record than the 15-0 Falcons. No. 2 Texas is currently 19-0 while No. 3 Kentucky is at 16-0. Also, with No. 11 Ohio State falling to No. 4 Nebraska this past week, Bowling Green is the only undefeated Division-I volleyball team left in the state of Ohio.Â
Leading The MACÂ
Of the seven main team statistics, Bowling Green is currently in the top three in the conference for all seven, including leading three of the categories. As it currently stands the Falcons are atop the MAC in hitting percentage with a mark of .246 with the next closest being Western Michigan at .240. The Orange and Brown also lead opponent hitting percentage at .154 with the next closest being Kent State at .180. Finally, Bowling Green is leading in aces per set with 1.58 with Akron trailing in second at 1.55. The Falcons are also second in assists per set and kills per set behind Western Michigan while being third in blocks per set and digs per set.Â
Watching Kidwell In The Record BookÂ
Katie Kidwell has the chance to move up the all-time lists once again for her career total blocks and career block assists marks. Kidwell will enter this week with 460 career total blocks, needing six to tie Lisa Berardinelli for fifth all-time and seven to pass her on the list. As for career block assists, Kidwell currently has 397 and will need to reach 414 to claim second on the all-time list, needing 17 to do so. Currently, second is occupied by both Lori Kemerer and Lisa Mika who each have 413. So far this season, Kidwell has 50 total blocks with 46 of them being block assists, leaving four as solos.Â
