Falcons to Face Creighton in 2021 Postseason WNIT Opener
March 15, 2021 | Women's Basketball
BGSU heads to Rockford, Ill., for at least two games in 32-team tourney
The Bowling Green State University women's basketball team has been selected to play in the 2021 Postseason WNIT, and the Falcons will play at least two games in Rockford, Ill., this weekend.
BGSU will meet Creighton on Friday (March 19), with tipoff time set for 2:00 p.m. CT (3:00 p.m. ET). Then, on Saturday (March 20), the Falcons will face either Northern Iowa or Dayton.
Should the Falcons win both of those games, a third-round contest would take place on Monday (March 22).
Saint Louis, DePaul, Milwaukee and Drake round out the eight-team Rockford regional.
"We are so excited for the opportunity to continue to play in March in a great and competitive tournament," said BGSU head coach Robyn Fralick. "I am so proud of our kids for earning this opportunity."
All games will be available via streaming through FloHoops. Every team is guaranteed at least two games in this year's event.
The champions of each of the four regional sites – Charlotte, N.C.; Fort Worth, Texas; Memphis, Tenn.; and Rockford, Ill. – will advance to the Memphis site, with the semifinals tipping off March 26 and the championship game set for March 28.
BGSU is appearing in the WNIT for the seventh time in program history, and the first time since 2014. The Falcons enter the Creighton game with an all-time record of 7-6 in the tourney.
The Falcons will take the court for Friday's game with an overall record of 20-6, and BGSU went 14-4 in Mid-American Conference play to capture the league regular-season title.
BGSU is one of four 20-win teams in the 32-team field, joining California Baptist, Delaware and UT Martin.
The Falcons have an all-time record of 1-2 vs. Creighton, and Friday will mark the teams' second-ever meeting in a national postseason tournament. The Bluejays posted an 84-73 win over the Falcons at venerable Anderson Arena in the first round of the 1994 NCAA Championships.
BGSU is 11-9 vs. Dayton through the years, and the teams have met in the WNIT once before. BGSU captured a 64-52 win over the Flyers at Anderson Arena on March 20, 2008 – exactly 13 years prior to this weekend's possible BG-UD matchup.
The Falcons have never faced Northern Iowa in women's basketball.
This is the 23rd year for the Postseason WNIT and the first year the event has bracketed only 32 teams since 2006, as tournament officials pared the event back because of COVID-19 issues.
This year's tournament features four teams from the Atlantic 10 and three teams each from the Big East, Missouri Valley and SEC. Five conferences placed two each – the MAC, American, Conference USA, Mountain West and Pac-12. Other conferences represented include the Atlantic Coast, Big Ten, Colonial, Conference USA, Horizon, Ohio Valley, Southern, Sun Belt and Western Athletic.
"The 2021 Postseason WNIT has included constant groundwork and cooperation from literally hundreds of people invested in the success of women's basketball, and we are grateful for their help and enthusiasm," said Renee Carlson, executive director of the WNIT. "It's not a normal season, but we do have a typically strong and competitive field of teams who we know will battle intensely for the championship."
