First-year Falcon makes the cut as the national list is narrowed to 10
Bowling Green's Lexi Fleming has been named a finalist for the World Exposure Report NCAA Division-I Freshman of the Year. The announcement was made by the web site this week.
On March 1, Fleming was named to the list of 25 semifinalists for the award. She was the lone Mid-American Conference player on the list at that time. Now, that list has been narrowed to 10 finalists.
Fleming, a native of Cincinnati, Ohio, was named the MAC Freshman of the Year, and also earned All-MAC Second-Team honors. She has started all 26 games and has helped lead one of the top turnarounds in college basketball this season. Fleming is the leading scorer on a BGSU team that won the MAC regular-season championship, with 16.2 points per game, and the guard also paces the team in three-point field goals made (57) and steals (2.5 per game) while ranking fourth in rebounds (4.9 rpg) and assists (2.6 apg).
Fleming has scored in double digits in 23 of this season's 26 games, with eight games of 20 points or more. She leads all MAC freshmen in no fewer than 16 statistical categories, and is ranked among the top-10 freshmen in the nation in 12 of those categories.
After going 10-21 overall and 3-15 in the MAC last season, the Falcons were picked to finish 11th in the 12-team league in this year's conference preseason coaches' poll. BGSU currently has an overall mark of 20-6 and finished with a league ledger of 14-4, good for a MAC regular-season title.
The World Exposure Report Freshman of the Year will be announced on April 9.
The Falcons head to Rockford, Ill., for the 2021 Postseason WNIT. BGSUÂ will face Creighton on Friday (March 19) before meeting either Dayton or Northern Iowa on Saturday (March 20).
