Falcons pound out 10 hits in Friday's contest in Muncie
The Falcons (10-10, 2-3 MAC) scored in four of the game's seven innings, drawing seven walks in addition to collecting those 10 hits. But, the Cardinals (7-9, 1-0 MAC) scored at least one run in five-straight innings to pick up the win.
Maycee Godbolt had two hits, including a two-run single, while Greta L'Esperance and Nikki Sorgi each had a pair of hits as well. L'Esperance stole a base and scored two runs, while Evelyn Loyola had a two-run single.
In all, every starter in the BGSU lineup reached base via hit or walk at least once, with seven of the nine players reached two or more times.
NOTEWORTHY
• BGSU had a runner caught stealing on Friday, after the Falcons had gone 28-for-28 to begin the season.
• The 28th steal in that stretch came from Greta L'Esperance. The redshirt freshman is now a perfect 14-for-14 on the year and 18-of-18 in her career.
BGSU-BSU – HOW IT HAPPENED
• Each starting pitcher, BGSU's Harlie Vannatter and Ball State's Darcie Huber, allowed a hit and a walk, but no runs in the first inning. But, the Cardinals broke through in the second. BSU loaded the bases with one out, and Haley Wynn doubled to score all three runners.
• BG got a pair of runs back in the third, as Greta L'Esperance walked with one out, then stole second with two down. Walks to Madi McCoy and Evelyn Loyola loaded the bases, before Maycee Godbolt hit a Huber pitch on a line to the base of the wall in right, scoring L'Esperance and McCoy.
• But, in the bottom of the inning, the Cards answered with two runs. Faith Hensley led off with a walk, and after a one-out double by Kennedy Wynn, Amaia Daniel's single plated both runners.
• Back came the Falcons with a fourth-inning run. Sarah Gonzalez drew a one-out walk, and Nikki Sorgi hit a ball over the first baseman's head for a single. An infield hit by L'Esperance loaded the bases, then Sammy Dees was robbed of extra bases as center fielder Kennedy Wynn made a diving catch. But, on that play, Gonzalez trotted home to make it a 5-3 game.
• Again, though, the hosts answered with a run in the bottom of the inning, as Haley Dominique's single scored Kayla Lissy, who had doubled down the line to begin the inning. BSU put runners at second and third before Vannatter got an inning-ending strikeout.
• The Cards added to the lead on a two-out solo homer by Delanie Johnson in the fifth.
• BG scored twice off of relief pitcher Deborah Jones in the sixth. Sorgi singled with one out, putting a ball over the first baseman's head for the second-straight at-bat. L'Esperance followed with an infield hit, and a Sammy Dees line-drive single up the middle loaded the bases. Jones got the second out, but Loyola followed with a single down the right-field line, plating Sorgi and L'Esperance, to make it a 7-5 game.
• BSU got a run against reliever Sydney Stepp in the home half of the sixth. Dominique singled with one out, and took second when Janae Hogg was hit by a pitch. Stacy Payton followed with a single that scored Dominique, but pinch-runner Kaitlyn Mathews was thrown out at the plate.
• The Falcons threatened again in the seventh. Sophie Weber led off with a walk, and Payton Hamm lined a ball over the shortstop's head for a single, with pinch-runner Peyton Dolejs taking second. Reagan Williamson's grounder up the middle resulted in Hamm being forced at second, but Williamson was safe as the throw to first got away, with Dolejs coming around to score. But, Jones averted further damage to close out the win.
