BSU holds off BG's game-one comeback bid en route to sweep of DH
MUNCIE, Ind. – The Bowling Green State University softball team mounted a late comeback bid at Ball State University on Saturday (March 27), rallying from five runs down to bring the tying run to the plate, but ultimately the Cardinals held on for a 7-5 win.
In the second game of the day's Mid-American Conference doubleheader, BSU picked up a 9-1 win at First Merchants Ballpark Complex.
Sammy Dees hit a three-run homer in the seventh inning of game one, as the Falcons (10-12, 2-5 MAC) looked to rally back from a 7-2 deficit. Dees and Greta L'Esperance each had a pair of hits in the contest.
Sarah Gonzalez homered in the second game, but a big third inning by the Cardinals (9-9, 3-0 MAC) broke open a tie game.
BGSU-BSU GAME ONE – HOW IT HAPPENED
• BGSU broke through against BSU starter Tieghan Morio in the top of the first. Greta L'Esperance and Sammy Dees began the game with back-to-back singles, and Maycee Godbolt's grounder would wind up scoring L'Esperance with the game's first run.
• But, the Cardinals knotted the game in the bottom of the inning, as Kayla Lissy lined a ball into the right-field corner and came all the way around to score.
• BG nearly took the lead in the second. Logan Everett and Sarah Gonzalez each singled with one out, and Nikki Sorgi blooped a ball into shallow right field that eluded the diving Haley Dominique. But, Gonzalez was forced to hold to see if the ball would be caught, and the BSU outfielder's throw to second resulted in a force play and the second out. Then, a ground ball back to the circle ended the half inning.
• Falcon starter Sydney Stepp worked out of a bases-loaded jam in the home half of the second, getting a fly ball to Sorgi in left to end the inning, and BG retook the lead in the third. Madi McCoy singled with one out, and took second on a grounder. Then, Sophie Weber singled, and McCoy came around to score on an errant throw by a BSU outfielder.
• But, in the bottom of the third, Janae Hogg's three-run homer put BSU on top, 4-2. Stepp retired the Cardinals in order in the fourth, but BSU added to the lead in the fifth, scoring a pair of runs on an infield grounder by Delanie Johnson and a sacrifice fly by Amaia Daniel.
• And, in the sixth, the Cards used two singles and a walk to take a 7-2 lead as a Stacy Payton base hit plated the run.
• But, in the seventh, Sorgi led off with a single to center, and L'Esperance laced a base hit to left. Sammy Dees followed by clubbing a Morio pitch over the wall in left to cut the BSU lead to two runs. Weber drew a walk with two outs, bringing the tying run to the plate, but Morio was able to get a grounder back to the circle for the final out.
BGSU-BSU GAME TWO – HOW IT HAPPENED
• Both starting pitchers, BSU's Deborah Jones and the Falcons' Harlie Vannatter, retired the side in order in the first, but BSU got on the board in the second. Hogg led off with a single, and after a Payton walk, Faith Hensley's base hit scored pinch-runner Hannah Dukeman.
• But, with one swing of the bat, Sarah Gonzalez tied the game. Gonzalez led off the third inning with a homer to left-center to make it a 1-1 contest.
• The Cardinals, however, sent 11 batters to the plate in the bottom of the inning, using four singles and four walks.
• The Falcons got three baserunners over the remaining two innings, on a McCoy single in the fourth and walks to Sorgi and Makailah Dees in the fifth. But, BG could not cut into the deficit, and the Cards got another run in the bottom of the inning to close out the win.
STATS & LEADERS
• L'Esperance and Sammy Dees each had two hits in the opener, with L'Esperance scoring two runs and Dees driving in three on her seventh-inning homer. Weber was 1-for-2 with a pair of walks for the Falcons.
