Falcons fall, 1-0, in final game in Huntington
HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – Payton Gottshall fired a complete-game three-hitter for the Bowling Green State University softball team on Saturday morning (March 6). But, her counterpart, Saint Francis University's Grace Vesco, threw a no-hitter as the Red Flash downed the Falcons, 1-0. The game, BGSU's final contest at the Thundering Herd Round Robin, was held at Dot Hicks Field.
The teams were scoreless until the sixth, when SFU's Lexi Hernandez singled to score Lindsay Ward.
Sophie Weber reached base twice for the Falcons, drawing a pair of walks.
BGSU-SFU – HOW IT HAPPENED
•  Payton Gottshall retired the first seven batters she faced, before allowing a one-out single to Ashley Orischak in the third. After that hit, however, Gottshall struck out the next two hitters.
• The BG redshirt freshman would whiff four of the next five hitters, in fact, before Lexi Hernandez walked to lead off the home half of the fifth. Orischak was hit by a pitch with two outs in the inning, but Gottshall recorded another strikeout to retire the side.
• But, SFU starter Grace Vesco was matching Gottshall inning for inning. Vesco allowed a two-out walk to Sophie Weber in the second inning, before striking out the next hitter.Â
• In the BG third, Sarah Gonzalez led off with a walk, and after Greta L'Esperance reached on a fielder's choice, erasing Gonzalez, L'Esperance stole second with two down. Vesco, however, induced the next Falcon hitter to pop up to short.
• Logan Everett reached on a fourth-inning error, and Weber followed by drawing a walk, her second of the game. Pinch-hitter Maycee Godbolt then hit a liner, but it was caught by second baseman Orischak to retire the side.
• Madi McCoy got as far as third base in the sixth, after walking and advancing on a wild pitch and a groundout. But, a strikeout ended that threat.
• And, in the bottom of the sixth, SFU broke through. Lindsay Ward singled with two outs, and after Tayven Rousseau was hit by a pitch, Hernandez singled up the middle to score Ward from second.
• That was all Vesco would need, as she struck out the sie in the seventh. Vesco walked four batters and struck out nine in the win.
• Gottshall issued one walk while striking out 11.
• Both teams left five runners on base.
UP NEXT
• The Falcons have added a doubleheader at Dayton, and BG will face the Flyers on Wednesday (March 10). First pitch of game one is set for 3:00 p.m.
