Bobcats Walk It Off in Extras to Capture Series Opener, 4-3
April 16, 2021 | Softball
Gottshall pitches complete-game six-hitter in her first game in nearly a month
Katie Yun homered twice for the Bobcats (13-13, 9-8 MAC), who scored all four of their runs via the long ball. Yun's first round-tripper broke a scoreless tie, but the Falcons (15-17, 7-10 MAC) plated a pair of runs in the fourth inning, as both Nikki Sorgi and Peyton Dolejs doubled during that frame.
Sarah Gonzalez beat out a grounder up the middle for an infield single that scored Sorgi from third, and Gonzalez then came all the way around to score from first on the Dolejs double.
In the sixth inning, Madi McCoy homered to give the Falcons a two-run lead, but in the bottom of the inning, Yun's two-run homer tied the score at 3-3.
Payton Gottshall, pitching for the first time since March 21, threw a complete-game six-hitter as the Falcons had a narrow 7-6 advantage in the hits column. Two of Ohio's hits were bunt singles, and another was a bloop double, but the three homers accounted for all four Bobcat runs.
NOTEWORTHY
• Redshirt freshman Payton Gottshall struck out seven batters on Friday. Gottshall now has 172 strikeouts in 102 1/3 innings this season, and she has exactly 300 career strikeouts in 189 1/3 innings in her BG career.
• Gottshall – again just a redshirt freshman – already ranks eighth on the BGSU career strikeouts list.
BGSU-OHIO – HOW IT HAPPENED
• Ohio starting pitcher Madi McCrady issued a one-out walk to Sammy Dees in the top of the first inning, but got a double-play ball to end the half-inning. In the bottom of the first, Katie Yun got the Bobcats on the board, lifting a ball in the air to right. The ball carried over the fence for an opposite-field homer and a 1-0 lead.
• BGSU starter Payton Gottshall issued a two-out walk to Caitlin Fogue in the second inning, but Fogue was called out for leaving the base early. Then, in the third, an Emily Walker bunt single was erased as Dees started a nifty double play. The Falcon second baseman fielded a ground ball, tagged Walker and fired to first. Allie Englant followed with a flare that landed in shallow left for a double, but Gottshall got the next hitter hit a popup that was gloved by shortstop Madi McCoy for the third out.
• McCrady, though, did not allow a hit through four innings, with the Dees walk in the first and a McCoy base on balls in the fourth accounting for BG's only baserunners in that time. In the fifth, however, Nikki Sorgi got BG's first hit, and it would prove to be the first of three Falcon hits in that inning.
• Sorgi, who had seen a drive to left-center caught in the second frame, led off the fifth with another drive to left-center. This time, the ball split the outfielders for a double. Maycee Godbolt bunted Sorgi to third, but McCrady got a strikeout for the second out.
• But, Sarah Gonzalez hit a roller past McCrady and toward the second-base bag, beating the throw from the shortstop for an infield hit as Sorgi crossed the plate. Then, Peyton Dolejs followed with a double to right-center, with Gonzalez coming all the way around to score from first and give BGSU a 2-1 lead.
• And, with one down in the sixth, McCoy homered to center to put the Falcons ahead by two.
• But, in the bottom of the inning, Englant bunted for a leadoff hit, and Yun's one-out homer tied the game. BGSU was retired in order in the top of the seventh, but Gottshall set the Bobcats down one-two-three, striking out the final two batters, to send the game to extra innings.
• McCrady worked around Greta L'Esperance's one-out bunt single in the eighth, and after the Bobcats drew back-to-back two-out walks to load the bases, Gottshall struck out Alexis Dawe to send the game to the ninth.
• BG threatened in the top of the ninth. Evelyn Loyola led off with a single to left, as the ball ticked off the top of the glove of leaping shortstop Yun. Sorgi followed with a bunt, and she and pinch-runner Marlie McNulty both were safe on the play. Godbolt bunted the runners to second and third for her second sacrifice of the day, but McCrady then struck out the next two Falcons. And, Mikenzie Vaughn led off the bottom of the inning with a homer that gave the 'Cats the win.
STATS, LEADERS & NOTES
• BGSU had a narrow 7-6 lead in hits, with Sorgi going 2-for-4 with a double. McCoy reached base twice, with a walk and a solo homer.
• Sorgi, McCoy and Gonzalez all scored runs, and McCoy, Gonzalez and Dolejs each drove in a run.
• Yun was 2-for-3 with the two homers and three RBI for the Bobcats, while Englant went 2-for-4.
• Each team got a complete-game pitching performance. McCrady allowed three runs and seven hits in nine innings, walking two and striking out seven.
• Gottshall, as mentioned, was seeing her first game action since March 21, after missing the Ball State, Akron and Buffalo series due to injury. On Friday, she allowed four runs and six hits, walking four and striking out seven.
• Dolejs had her first career double in Friday's game, just one game after hitting her first collegiate homer. Dolejs went deep in Saturday's (April 10) second game against Buffalo.
• Dolejs now has an RBI in each of the last two games, and has a total of four hits over the last three contests.
• The loss was BG's first in extra innings this season. The Falcons are now 2-1 in extra-inning contests in 2021, having picked up road wins in back-to-back February games at Cleveland State (8-7 in nine innings, Feb. 13) and Winthrop (2-0 in eight innings, Feb. 19).
• Friday's action marked BGSU's first extra-inning game in MAC play since a 3-2, 10-inning win over Akron at Meserve Field on April 27, 2019.
Payton Gottshall's final strikeout today was the 3️⃣0️⃣0️⃣th of her BGSU career.
