BGSU picks up 10-0 victory in Saturday split
ATHENS, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University softball team exploded for seven runs in the third inning Saturday afternoon (April 17), and the Falcons went on to a 10-0, run-rule win over Ohio University in Mid-American Conference action at the Ohio Softball Field.
In the first game of the afternoon's doubleheader, the Bobcats made two first-inning runs stand up in a 2-0 victory.
Madi McCoy homered for the second-straight day for the Falcons (16-18, 8-11 MAC), as her three-run bomb started the scoring in the third frame of the second game. Peyton Dolejs also drove in three runs with one swing of the bat in that same inning, with a bases-loaded, bases-clearing double.
Hannah Davies scattered four hits en route to a shutout win, walking three and striking out six.
BGSU outhit Ohio in the opening game, but the Bobcats (14-14, 10-9 MAC) plated a pair of runs in the first inning and made that lead stand up. Mackensie Kohl allowed seven hits, but kept the Falcons off of the scoreboard.
Sydney Stepp was the hard-luck loser, allowing just five hits in her complete-game effort.
BGSU outhit the Bobcats in each of Saturday's games, and the Falcons have had more hits than the opponent in eight of the last nine games (and hits were even in the ninth contest).

NOTEWORTHY
• BGSU's total of 10 runs in Saturday's second game was a season high. It was the Falcons' highest output since a 10-3 win over Seton Hall on March 8, 2020. That win proved to be BGSU's final game of the abbreviated 2020 season.
• BG's last double-digit run total in a MAC contest came on April 13, 2019, in a 10-2 win over Buffalo at Meserve Field.
QUOTING COACH WILLIS
"We had two strong outings in the circle today, with Sydney Stepp in game one and Hannah Davies in game two. If we take away the mental errors in the first inning of game one, we played Ohio even and it felt like our offense was getting close to busting things open late in that game."
"Davies gave us a strong performance in game two and kept their power hitters at bay. Our offense exploded in the second game and we were able run through three of Ohio's pitchers. From top to bottom, our entire offense contributed, and I would love to see us keep the same offensive focus tomorrow. We need to continue to control the zone and capitalize on pitches in the zone in the final game of the Ohio series."
BGSU-OHIO GAME ONE – HOW IT HAPPENED
• The only runs in Saturday's opener came in the bottom of the first inning. Caroline Spacek reached on an infield single with one out, and took second on a wild pitch. Katie Yun drew a walk, and another wild pitch on the ball-four offering sent Spacek to third. On the play, Yun rounded first and broke for second, and on the throw, Spacek came around and scored.
• Then, Annalia Paoli's single plated Yun with, as it turned out, the final run of the contest.
• After the opening inning, BG pitcher Sydney Stepp allowed only three more hits the rest of the way. Caitlin Fogue singled in the second before Stepp faced just three batters in both the third and fourth frames.
• Ohio got back-to-back singles in the fifth, but with runners on first and second, third baseman Sarah Gonzalez gloved a soft liner to end the inning.
• But, the Falcons could not break through against Ohio starter Mackensie Kohl. Sammy Dees sharply singled to center in the first inning, and Gonzalez lined a ball off of Kohl's leg for an infield single to begin the third.
• In that third frame, BG got runners to second and third with one out, after a Peyton Dolejs sac bunt and a Greta L'Esperance infield hit, but Kohl got a strikeout and a fly ball to center to end the threat.
• L'Esperance singled again in the fifth, and went to third on a Sammy Dees double down the left-field line with two outs, but again, Kohl escaped the jam, this time on a ground ball to short.
• Nikki Sorgi led off the sixth with a hit, and Dolejs had a one-out single in the seventh, but it was not enough as Kohl completed the shutout.
BGSU-OHIO GAME TWO – HOW IT HAPPENED
• The Falcons got a run off of Madi McCrady in the top of the first. L'Esperance singled to begin the game, and stole second with one out, continuing on to third on an error. From there, she tagged and scored easily on a sacrifice fly by Madi McCoy.
• BG broke the game wide open in the third, as the first seven betters of the inning all reached base. L'Esperance and Sammy Dees singled, and McCoy clubbed a homer to center to give BGSU a 4-0 lead.
• Holly Brehm replaced McCrady in the circle, but Sorgi greeted her with a single, and Evelyn Loyola followed with a base hit before Sophie Weber walked to load the bases.
• Peyton Dolejs followed with a three-run double down the left-field line, and suddenly, it was a seven-run gae.
• BGSU got another run when, after a Makailah Dees single, Dolejs scored on an error. Finally, Cassidy Zaker – Ohio's third pitcher of the inning – got the final out.
• Ohio's first hit of the game came from Allie Englant with one out in the third, but Davies struck out Emily Walker and got Yun to ground out to short. Then, Davies worked around a leadoff double in the fourth, with a pair of strikeouts and another infield grounder.
• BG scored two more times in the fifth, as a Makailah Dees sac fly scored Dolejs, who had singled, before a L'Esperance single plated Gonzalez.
• The 'Cats loaded the bases with one down in the bottom of the inning, but Davies got Yun to foul out to right, then got Mikenzie Vaughn to hit a game-ending grounder to McCoy at short.
STATS, LEADERS & NOTES
• BGSU outhit Ohio, 7-5 in the opener and 13-4 in the nightcap.
• L'Esperance went 4-for-4 in game two and had six hits on the day. She had two hits in the third inning of the second game, as BG had eight hits in that inning alone.
• Davies earned her second shutout of the season in the second game. She allowed just four hits, walking three and striking out six.
• Stepp gave up only five hits in the opener, with one walk and four strikeouts.
• Sammy Dees had two hits in each game, including a double in the opener.
• L'Esperance stole a base in each contest and now has 19 on the year.
• Dolejs was 3-for-5 with two runs and three RBI in the twinbill, while Sorgi had three hits on the day.
UP NEXT
• The Falcons and Bobcats conclude their four-game weekend series on Sunday (April 18), with a single game beginning at 12:00 p.m. at the Ohio Softball Field.
• Then, BGSU will prepare for a Tuesday (April 20) doubleheader at Toledo. Game one is scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m. at Scott Park.
• BGSU's next home action is scheduled for Wednesday, April 28, when UT comes to Meserve Field for a twinbill.
