No Fewer than 17 Falcons Named to Academic All-MAC Team
May 18, 2021 | Women's Soccer
The Bowling Green State University women's soccer team was well-represented, to say the least, when the Mid-American Conference office announced the Academic All-MAC Team on Tuesday afternoon (May 18). The Falcons had a whopping 17 student-athletes, by far the highest total among conference schools, named to the team.
BGSU's lengthy list of honorees includes Madison Alberty, Sarah Allen, Sophia Barnes, Lili Berg, Katie Cox, Nikki Cox, Jasmijn Dijsselhof, Zoë Hudson, Ruby Linton, Lauren Milner, Rachel Muller, Makenzie Ortman, Mackenzie Reuber, Audrey Shea, Lynsey Spotts, Kennedy White and Madi Wolfbauer.
A total of 130 student-athletes were named to the team.
Bowling Green, as mentioned, led the way with 17 student-athletes on this year's team. Ball State and Northern Illinois each had 13 honorees, while Eastern Michigan and Western Michigan had 12 student-athletes apiece.
A total of 13 student-athletes named to the team have a perfect 4.000 cumulative GPA. BGSU again led the way with four of those 13 student-athletes. Only one other school had more than one.
There were 25 student-athletes on the BGSU women's soccer roster during the 2020-21 season. Of those 25 individuals, 17 were named to the Academic All-MAC Team, five were freshmen and not yet eligible for consideration, and three were injured and/or did not appear in enough matches to meet the criteria. All eight BGSU student-athletes who were not named to the team have a cumulative GPA of at least 3.360, with seven of the eight at 3.500 or higher.
The Academic All-MAC honor is bestowed upon student-athletes who have excelled in athletics and academics. To qualify, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative GPA and have participated in at least 50 percent of the contests for that particular sport. Freshmen are not eligible for the award.
The Falcons enjoyed tremendous success on the field as well as in the classroom yet again in 2020-21. BGSU went 6-1-1 overall and 5-1-0 in MAC play, BG outscored opponents, 17-3, this spring, and the Falcons tied for first in the entire nation in shutout percentage (.750), recording six shutouts in eight matches. The Falcons earned the MAC's automatic bid to the NCAA Championships for the third consecutive season.
BGSU is 47-19-8 overall, 31-7-1 in MAC regular-season matches and 38-8-3 in all games vs. conference foes since the start of the 2017 season.
Since the beginning of the 2018 campaign, the Falcons are 34-12-7 overall, 25-3-0 in MAC regular-season action and 30-3-2 in all games vs. league opposition.
