Falcons Fall to Huskies, 2-1
September 26, 2021 | Women's Soccer
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University women's soccer team suffered a 2-1 loss to Northern Illinois University on Sunday afternoon (Sept. 26). The Mid-American Conference match was held at Cochrane Stadium.
Amanda Czerniak scored early and Edith Delgado scored late for the Huskies (now 4-6-0, 1-1-0 MAC), while Sadie McGill made eight saves in goal.
The Falcons (2-5-2, 1-1-0 MAC) got a goal back in the latter stages of the match, off the boot of Jasmijn Dijsselhof, but could not find the tying goal in the final minutes.
BGSU had advantages of 28-8 in total shots, 9-6 in shots on goal and 10-4 in corner kicks. The Falcons took 14 shots in each half.
QUOTING COACH WALKER
"Credit to Northern Illinois. They defended well, they battled really hard, they made it difficult for us. Sometimes when you come in, work really hard and grind it out, you get a result. But, today wasn't good enough for us. We took 28 shots and couldn't finish our chances. We weren't good enough in front of goal, we weren't good enough in the back, and that's what's gonna happen if you don't come to play. We just weren't good enough today."
HOW IT HAPPENED
• The Huskies took an early lead, as Amanda Czerniak scored at the 6:11 mark. Off of a broken play, a pass by Haley Hoppe was deflected toward Grace Louis at the top of the 18-yard box. Louis headed the ball toward Czerniak, who took one touch as she moved from right to left, and poked a shot into the lower-right-hand corner of the net from approximately 10 yards out.
• The Falcons had a chance with nearly 20 minutes gone, as Nikki Cox played a cross into the box from the right side. Sadie McGill came off of her line and parried the ball, and Isabelle Gilmore ran onto it and hit a shot from just inside the box, but the ball went wide of the right post.
• The chances came fast and furious for the Falcons as the minutes ticked down before halftime. With just over 11 minutes before the break, Katie Cox won the ball on the right side of the field. She played a pass to Nikki Cox, who hit a one-timer toward goal from the 18-yard line. Kennedy White redirected that ball on frame from six yards out, but the shot was hit directly at McGill.
• Just one minute later, Madi Wolfbauer fed a nifty pass to Lacee Bethea, who charged into the penalty area on the left side. Bethea tried to fire a shot before a defender arrived, and the Falcon forward was indeed first to the ball, but the effort went wide left.
• The clock had gone under eight minutes when Wolfbauer redirected Audrey Shea's long ball forward into the path of Nikki Cox. Cox hit a hard shot that forced McGill into a diving stop.
• With 2:45 left in the period, Madison Alberty took a pass from Zoe Hudson and hit a shot from distance that hit the crossbar and bounded out for a goal kick. It was Alberty's second shot off the bar in as many home matches.
• With 33 minutes to go in the match, a Mackenzie Reuber free kick sailed into the box. It was deflected by a Huskie defender, and Shea fired a quick one-time effort, but the ball went directly to McGill.
• Off of a corner kick midway through the half, the ball was deflected out of the six-yard box. Dijsselhof, who had taken the corner, raced in to put the ball back into the mixer. Wolfbauer hit a volley out of the air from the left side, but the low shot was corralled by McGill.
• Just two minutes later, BGSU 'keeper Lili Berg made an acrobatic play, leaping to deflect a shot/cross by Hoppe wide of the net. The Huskies' ensuing corner kick sailed behind the goal for a BG goal kick.
• Fourteen minutes remained when Alberty found Bethea with a through ball from BG's end of the field. Bethea tracked the ball down on the right side of the pitch, cut back to her left and fired, but McGill was able to grab the shot out of the air.
• With nine minutes to go, the Falcons were able to string several passes together, with Shea, Katie Cox, Nikki Cox, Bethea and Wolfbauer all involved in the buildup. Bethea played a cross from the left side, and Wolfbauer headed it toward the onrushing Lynsey Spotts, but Spotts slipped at the last moment, and the Huskies were able to clear the ball out of danger.
• NIU doubled the lead at the 83:12 mark. Edith Delgado, who had just entered the match for the first time less than 20 seconds earlier, picked up her first goal of the season. Off of a throw-in, Hoppe settled the ball and looked to hit a turnaround shot from the right side of the box, but that effort was blocked. Delgado was first to the ball, poking it to her left past a BG defender, then sliding a shot past Berg, who was forced to come off her line. The ball found the far corner of the net for a two-goal Huskie advantage.
• But, just over a minute later, the Falcons got a goal back. After a throw-in, Maya Dean's diagonal ball was punched out of the air by McGill. Spotts and a defender went up for the ball near the six-yard line, and it was headed across that very line. Dijsselhoff ran onto it and hit a shot that went through the legs of the lunging NIU 'keeper and into the net.
• With four minutes remaining, Wolfbauer played a pass to Nikki Cox, who found Bethea out wide. Bethea hit a left-side cross, and White got her head on the ball, but nodded it just wide of the right post.
