BGSU battles Buffalo at Cochrane Stadium Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
KENT, Ohio – Tianna Harris scored in the 49th minute, lifting Kent State University to a 1-0 win over the Bowling Green State University women's soccer team Thursday evening (Oct. 13). The Mid-American Conference match was held at Zoeller Field at Dix Stadium.
Harris headed home a Siena Stambolich corner kick to give the Golden Flashes (4-6-4, 4-1-2 MAC) the lead with just over three minutes gone in the second half. The Falcons (5-5-3, 3-2-2 MAC) had a 9-4 advantage in total shot attempts on the night, but could not find the equalizer.
Sarah Melen made five saves for the Flashes, who snapped a seven-match losing streak against the Falcons.
HOW IT HAPPENED
• The teams combined for only three shot attempts – all by the Falcons – in the opening 45 minutes. After a KSU foul, Makenzie Ortman put a hard free kick on frame with just over 18 minutes gone, but KSU goalkeeper Sarah Melen was able to make the save, grabbing the ball on the short hop. Two minutes later, Kennedy White fired a hard shot from distance, but that effort was hit directly at Melen.
• But, the Flashes' first shot attempt of the night resulted in a goal. KSU won a corner kick, and that Siena Stambolich kick found the head of Tianna Harris in the center of the box. The defender redirected the ball into the net for her first goal of the season.
• BGSU had several chances over the remaining time. In the 64th minute, a quick turnaround shot by White appeared to have Melen beat, but the ball rolled just wide of the right post.
• Maya Dean, who led all players with four shots on the night, fired three of those shots in a 63-second span midway through the half. But, her first effort was blocked, a follow-up try was saved, and after BGSU won the ball back, another shot went wide of the target.
• Dean put another shot on frame in the 82nd minute, and Lacee Bethea saw a shot go outside the right post two minutes later. That Bethea try was the final shot attempt for either team on the night.
STATS, NOTES & NUMBERS
• BGSU had advantages of 9-4 in total shot attempts and 5-3 in shots on goal. KSU did have a 6-0 lead in corner kicks.
• Lili Berg made one save on the night, while Sarah Melen was credited with five stops.
• Despite the loss, BGSU now has an overall record of 63-31-14 since the start of the 2017 season. And, since the beginning of the 2018 campaign, the Falcons are 50-24-13.
• Since the start of 2017, BGSU is now 42-11-4 in MAC regular-season matches and 51-12-6 in all matches (regular-season and tournament) vs. MAC foes.
• BGSU is 22-6-2 on the road against MAC opponents since the start of 2017, and the Falcons are now 19-3-1 in league road contests since the beginning of 2018.
