Four different players score in Falcons' drubbing of MAC preseason favorite
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University women's soccer team took firm control of Sunday's match from the outset, scoring twice in the first 10-plus minutes en route to a 4-0 win over Ohio University. The Mid-American Conference match was held at Cochrane Stadium.
Maya Dean scored less than four minutes into the match, and Lacee Bethea doubled the lead for the Falcons (5-4-3, 3-1-2 MAC) with under 11 minutes gone. Freshmen Abby Koly and Brynn Gardner also found the back of the net in Sunday's win.
Dean was involved in the scoring of all three first-half goals, with the primary assist on both the Bethea and Koly markers.
Lili Berg made five saves in goal en route to the shutout win. For the Bobcats (6-5-2, 2-3-1 MAC), the preseason favorite to win the MAC according to the coaches poll, Sam Wexell and Celeste Sloma each played 43 minutes in goal. Sloma made three second-half saves while allowing one goal.
With the win, the Falcons have moved into a three-way tie for third place in the conference standings. Six matches into the 11-game schedule, BGSU has 11 points. Buffalo currently leads the league with 14 points, while Ball State has 13 and BGSU, Kent State and Western Michigan have 11 apiece. Teams earn three points for a win and one for a tie.

NOTE OF THE DAY
• Through 11 matches this season entering Sunday, only four different BGSU players had scored a goal. But, four Falcons found the net against Ohio, including two players (Lacee Bethea and Abby Koly) who scored for the first time this season.
BONUS NOTE OF THE DAY
• Sunday marked the first time two freshmen scored in a match in nearly three years, since Nov. 3, 2019. On that date, then-frosh Makenzie Ortman and Kennedy White each scored in a 4-1 win over Central Michigan in MAC Tournament action at Cochrane.
THE GOALS
• The Falcons got on the board at the 3:56 mark. Kennedy White's pass sent Brynn Gardner down the right sideline. Gardner played a low ball into the box, and that centering ball got past Ohio goalkeeper Sam Wexell and rolled toward the far side of the goal, where Maya Dean met the pass. Dean tapped the ball into the vacated net for what would prove to be the winning goal.
• Lacee Bethea doubled the BGSU lead with 10:18 elapsed. Dean played the ball forward to Bethea on the left side of the penalty area. Bethea cut inside and moved toward the goal, before firing a shot that whizzed past Wexell and found the far-side netting.
• Abby Koly beat the goalie in the final minute of the half. Dean and Alaina Uncapher exchanged passes on the right side of the pitch, with Dean taking Uncapher's return pass as she ran toward the end line. Dean hit a one-timer into the box, and Koly redirected the ball into the net. The goal, Koly's first collegiate goal, came with just 44 seconds left before halftime.
• Brynn Gardner capped the scoring with just over 71 minutes gone. The Bobcats were whistled for a foul near midfield, just in front of the BGSU bench. Mackenzie Reuber took the ensuing free kick and hit a long diagonal ball into the penalty area. Ohio 'keeper Celeste Sloma came off of her line in attempt to grab the ball, but Gardner got there first, and deftly played a volley over Sloma and into the vacated net.
• The Falcons came close to scoring on several other occasions. In the 18th minute, White -- facing away from goal -- got her head on a Reuber diagonal ball in the box, and White's flick-on went just wide of the far post.
• Four minutes later, Brynn Gardner took a pass from White and hit a low shot that rolled inches wide of that same post.
• In the 84th minute, Jaden Frigerio's nifty work on the right side of the box resulted in a low cross to Emily Hollar near the six-yard line. Hollar's quick shot was struck well, but Sloma was able to make the stop.
