Cross Country Opens Postseason At Great Lakes Regionals On Friday

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University men's and women's cross country teams continue their respective seasons at the Great Lakes Regional Championships on Friday, Nov. 11. The Falcons will compete in their sixth meet of the season as they look to qualify for nationals.

2022 Great Lakes Regional Championships
The 2022 Great Lakes Regional Championships will be held at the LaVern Gibson Championship Cross Country Course in eastern Vigo County, Ind., on Friday, Nov. 11. The Indiana State-hosted event will begin with the women's 6k event at 10 a.m., followed by the men's 10k race at 11 a.m. The meet marks the first time the men will race at the 10k distance this season.

Admission to the event will cost $5 per person in cash only.

Against the Field
The Falcons will compete against members of every team in the Great Lakes Region except for Evansville. 295 athletes from 33 schools will be featured in the women's race, while 268 runners from 29 schools will toe the line in the men's race. Eight conferences will be represented at the meet with six conference championship teams competing between the two races. These squads include Michigan State (Big Ten), Milwaukee (Horizon League), and Toledo (Mid-American Conference) on the women's side and Miami (Mid-American Conference), Wisconsin (Big Ten), and Youngstown State (Horizon League) on the men's side. Six women's teams are nationally ranked, including No. 5 Notre Dame, No. 17 Toledo, No. 19 Michigan State, No. 21 Michigan, No. 22 Wisconsin, and No. 25 Ohio State. No. 8 Wisconsin, No. 13 Notre Dame, and No. 28 Michigan are nationally ranked for the men, totaling three teams.

Bowling Green competed in the Mid-American Conference Championships at Ohio University on Saturday, Oct. 29. Kailee Perry captured second team All-MAC honors with a ninth-place finish as the BGSU women placed sixth as a team. AJ Haffa and Cesar Arellano finished 26th and 28th overall as the men's squad placed eighth.

2021 Great Lakes Regional Championships
The Orange and Brown fared well in the 2021 Great Lakes Regionals, hosted by the University of Evansville at the Angel Mounds Cross Country Course. The women's team placed 14th, posting their best team score since 2015 as Kailee Perry, Elise Johnson, Emma Steingass, and Raegan Burkey all competed. The men finished 25th as all seven Bowling Green runners recorded personal bests in the 10k. Six current Falcons – Cesar Arellano, AJ Haffa, Christian Gagliardi, Charlie Nowinski, Mikey Worboy, and Liam Seiple – competed in the event.

The Falcons will look to secure team or individual spots in the 2022 NCAA Cross Country Championships through their Great Lakes Regional performances. 31 teams and 38 additional individuals will be selected for each race, which takes place in Stillwater, Okla., on Saturday, Nov. 19. The top two teams from each regional race will automatically advance, and another 13 teams across the country will receive at-large bids. 38 additional athletes will qualify individually, including the top four finishers in each regional race who placed in the top 25 regionally and are not part of a team selected to compete in the National Championships. Two additional runners who are the highest placing individuals at a regional that do not automatically qualify will receive at-large selections from the national pool.
