November 14, 2022 | Women's Basketball
BGSU sets the tone with 8 points in the game's first minute
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – Nyla Hampton and her Bowling Green State University women's basketball teammates set the tone early, as the Falcons opened the home portion of the schedule with a 102-72 victory over Wright State University Monday night (Nov. 14) at the Stroh Center.
Hampton scored a career-high 24 points, and helped the Falcons (2-0) jump on top early. BGSU scored six points in the game's first 42 seconds, with Hampton and Jocelyn Tate combining for all three buckets in that time.
An Allison Day field goal gave the Falcons eight points in the game's first minute, and BG never looked back.
Hampton's career night paced four double-digit scorers for the Falcons. Tate had 13 points in under nine minutes of action, while Amy Velasco also scored 13 points in the win. Elissa Brett had a double-double, with 10 points and a game-high 10 rebounds.
Emily Chapman led the Raiders (0-2) with 14 points.
The Falcons had a whopping 62 points in the paint, and BGSU scored 25 points off of WSU turnovers. The Orange and Brown forced the Raiders into 21 turnovers while committing just seven.

NOTE OF THE NIGHT
• BGSU hit triple digits on the scoreboard for the 26th time in school history, and the Falcons reached the 100-point mark against a Division-I opponent for the first time in nearly 18 years (since a 115-84 victory at IPFW on Nov. 19, 2004).
• Prior to Monday night, the Falcons most recently hit the century mark 11 months ago, with a 100-48 win over Notre Dame College at the Stroh (Dec. 12, 2021).

QUOTING COACH FRALICK
"What a fun night. It's so great to have the crowd back in the Stroh, and we got off to a great start. There's a lot of things we will learn from this game moving forward. Wright State is a hard team to guard. They can space you out, they're patient and I thought they really challenged our defense. But, offensively, we had some really good synergy. We were very connected and we shared the ball. This was a very fun night, but we've got a quick turnaround, with two more games this week."
FIRST QUARTER
• The Falcons, as mentioned, jumped on top early. Jocelyn Tate's putback on the game's opening possession gave BGSU the lead for good. Nyla Hampton immediately stole the WSU inbounds pass and whipped a pass to a cutting Tate for another layup. Then, Hampton picked Kacee Baumhower's pocket near midcourt and raced in for a layup of her own. The Raiders called timeout, trailing by six points with just 42 seconds gone.
• Out of that timeout, however, the visitors were unable to inbound the ball, and the five-second call gave possession back to BG. Allison Day's layup made it an 8-0 BG lead, with only 47 seconds elapsed.
• Emily Chapman got the visitors on the scoreboard, but Hampton immediately answered with a driving layup. Bryce Nixon hit a three-pointer, but Tate hit a pair of free throws, then fed Morgan Sharps for a triple and a 15-5 lead with just over two minutes gone.
• Hampton fed Day for a layup before Elissa Brett hit a floater, then a pull-up jumper that gave the Orange and Brown a 21-7 lead midway through the period.
• After scoring those 21 points in the first 4:32, BGSU then hit just one bucket – a Sophie Dziekan layup – over the next two-plus minutes. Amy Velasco's three-point play, however, gave the Falcons a 26-9 lead before the teams traded points over the final two minutes of the quarter. BG led, 33-17, after 10 minutes.
SECOND QUARTER
• The Falcons led by 14 points early in the second period before Hampton's driving layup began a 12-3 run. Hampton found Dziekan for a layup, and after Chapman countered with a three-pointer, another Hampton layup began a stretch in which BG again scored eight points in under a minute.
• This time, the quick 8-0 run included a pair of three-pointers, as Sharps and Velasco each hit from the arc. Velasco's bucket gave the Falcons a 47-24 lead.
• The lead grew to 24 points on a Lexi Fleming trey, then reached 26 on another Hampton layup. The teams traded hoops before Velasco's floater beat the first-half buzzer to give the home team a 60-35 lead at the break.
THIRD QUARTER
• The second-half start was similar to the first half for the Falcons, as BGSU scored seven points in the first 1:13 en route to an 11-0 run to begin the third quarter. Layups by Hampton and Tate started the run, and Tate them found Hampton beyond the arc for a long-range make. Two more layups – by Tate and Day – gave BG a 71-35 lead.
• WSU responded by scoring nine of the game's next 11 points, with a Makiya Miller free throw cutting BG's lead to 29. But, Fleming knocked down a pair of free throws of her own, then took a Velasco pass and drained a long-distance shot midway through the period.
• The visitors went on another 9-2 run to end the quarter, but the Falcons still led by 27 points, 82-55, after 30 minutes.
FOURTH QUARTER
• Brett scored BG's first two buckets of the fourth quarter, including a nifty layup in transition after Velasco's bounce pass, and freshman Jasmine Fearne's three-ball gave the Falcons an 89-59 advantage with just under seven minutes left in the game.
• Another freshman, Jaci Tubergen, made her BGSU debut, and proceeded to dish out a pair of assists. On her first possession as a Falcon, Tubergen drove the right baseline, drew several defenders toward her and dished the ball to Kadie Hempfling for an open layup. Then, Tubergen found Dziekan for a layup at the 4:32 mark.
• Dziekan scored again before Payton Moore recorded four-straight BGSU points. Moore made a layup with 2:21 on the clock, then got to the line and hit a pair of shots for a 100-72 lead just under a minute later. Tubergen fed the ball inside to Jasmine Clerkley for the final points of the evening.
