BGSU suffers first loss of the season
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The Bowling Green State University women's basketball team could not overcome a fast start by the University of Indiana on Thursday night (Nov. 17), as the nationally-ranked Hoosiers picked up a 96-61 victory at Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall.
Elissa Brett led the Falcons (2-1) with 14 points, while Kadie Hempfling went 3-for-3 from the arc en route to 11 points
The Hoosiers (4-0), ranked ninth in one national poll and 12th in another, had six players in double digits, led by Sara Scalia's 17 points.
IU, coming off of a double-digit road win over then-No. 4/5 Tennessee on Monday, shot over 58 percent from the field in the first half on Thursday, opening up a 49-21 lead at the intermission. Brett had 10 of her points in the third quarter, and the Falcons went 8-of-17 from the floor in both the third and fourth periods, but BGSU could not cool off the IU shooters.
Sophie Dziekan had eight points off the bench for the Falcons, while Nyla Hampton added seven. Allison Day had six points and a team-leading seven rebounds.
QUOTING COACH FRALICK
"I thought our first half was really poor, especially our first quarter. I was disappointed with our toughness, and I think we just got caught up in the big moment. Our second half was much better. We settled in and played our style of basketball. We've got to build off of that second half moving forward."
FIRST QUARTER
• Nyla Hampton opened the game's scoring with a floater in the paint 1:20 into the contest. The Hoosiers scored the game's next four points, taking the lead on a Mackenzie Holmes layup, but Jocelyn Tate's three-point play gave the Falcons a 5-4 advantage.
• The hosts, however, responded with the game's next nine points, prompting a BGSU timeout with 5:47 to go in the opening period.
• After a Lexi Fleming steal, Tate found Sophie Dziekan for a right-side jumper, cutting the IU lead to 13-7. But, the Hoosiers went on another run, scoring 12-straight points.
• Hampton had a nifty and-one bucket, finishing through contest in the final minute of the quarter, but a foul called on the Falcons with just 1.5 seconds on the clock resulted in three IU free throws and a 28-10 lead for the hosts.
SECOND QUARTER
• Elissa Brett hit a pull-up jumper to open the second-quarter scoring, but Yarden Garzon banked home a three-point try. Fleming answered with a rainbow three on the net possession, then took a charge by Grace Berger soon after.
• Brett knocked down another pull-up J, and after Holmes fouled Allison Day, Day sank a pair of free throws. But, the Falcons could not stop the IU offense, and Sydney Parrish's corner three capped a 9-0 run.
• Dziekan made a nice move and banked a shot off glass, but the Hoosiers answered with a bucket for a 49-21 halftime advantage.
THIRD QUARTER
• Brett scored 10 of her BG-best 14 points in the third quarter as the Falcons played the Hoosiers even in the period. The senior made a pair of free throws, before a Hampton steal gave the ball back to the Falcons. The next possession saw Hampton drive the baseline and lay the ball up and in.
• Tate drove and kicked the ball out to Brett for a three-pointer, and Amy Velasco fed Brett for a layup as the Falcons ran the floor.
• Dziekan put back a teammate's miss, and Day had a second-chance bucket of her own. Velasco found Olivia Hill for a layup, before Brett knocked down a short-corner jumper. Velasco spotted a wide-open Day for another layup, and the Falcons trailed by a 70-41 score after 30 minutes.
FOURTH QUARTER
• Dziekan got inside for a fourth-quarter hoop, and Kadie Hempfling hit a three from the top of the arc, but the Hoosiers then went on a 12-0 run.
• Tate's driving layup snapped that run, and Morgan Sharps hit a long-range shot. Hill then stole the ball at midcourt and went in for a layup.
• Hempfling knocked down back-to-back three-pointers, on passes from freshmen Jaci Tubergen and Jasmine Fearne, respectively. Hempfling then faked a three-point try, drove and banked a shot off glass to complete the game's scoring.
UP NEXT
• The Falcons remain on the road, heading to Evansville for a Saturday (Nov. 19) meeting with Southern Indiana. That game begins at 1:00 p.m. locally (2:00 p.m. Eastern) at Screaming Eagles Arena.
• Then, the Orange and Brown return home to face Northern Kentucky on Wednesday (Nov. 23), with that contest set for a 2:00 p.m. start at the Stroh Center.
