Bowling Green Hosts Kent State on Wednesday Night for a MACtion Clash

MACtion Returns to Doyt Perry Stadium
• Bowling Green State University hosts the Kent State Golden Flashes on Wednesday night as the Falcons conclude their home slate in 2022.
• A win on Wednesday would give BGSU its most victories in a season (6) since winning the MAC in 2015 with a 10-4 record. It would also be the most league wins (5) for the Falcons since that same 2015 season when BGSU went 7-1 in MAC play. A win also makes BGSU bowl-eligible for the first time since 2015.
• The game will be televised live on CBS Sports Network at 7 p.m.

Bowling Green vs. Kent State
• Bowling Green and Western Michigan are meeting for the sixth time in MACtion. BGSU is 3-2 against Kent State in mid-week games, but KSU has won the last two (2018, 2020) mid-week meetings.
• BGSU and KSU also met in mid-week games in 2014, 2016, 2017, 2018 and 2020. Only the 2014 meeting was on a Wednesday, while the other four were on a Tuesday.
• Bowling Green has lost the last four meetings with Kent State.
• Wednesday is the 90th all-time meeting between Bowling Green and Kent State.Â
Five Top Storylines
• The Falcons have 15-different players that have recorded at least one full sack this season, which is the most in the nation. They share the spot with Southern Miss.
• DL Karl Brooks is No. 2 in the nation in sacks with 8.0. He and OLB Demetrius Hardamon have a combined 14 sacks between them. That is the same or more than 40 other FBS programs have as a team.Â
• DL Brooks is the only players in the nation with 25+ tackles, 12+ TFLs, 5.5+ sacks, 2+ pass breakups and at least one fumble recovery.Â
• BGSU has recovered 13 fumbles, which ranks No. 2 in the nation. The Falcons trail only Duke (15). OLB Charles Rosser is tied for the nation's lead with three fumbles recovered.
• WR Odieu Hiliare has a catch in 31-straight games, which includes his career at Alabama A&M. It is tied for the 14th-best active streak in the nation. The Alabama A&M transfer has 137 career receptions for 1,792 career receiving yards and 17 receiving touchdowns.
Bowling Green vs. Kent State
• Wednesday is the 90th all-time meeting Bowling Green and Kent State, a series BGSU leads 60-23-6. However, Kent State has won four in a row after a BGSU five-game winning streak in the series. It is Kent State's longest winning streak in the series.
• Bowling Green and Kent State will battle it out for the annual Anniversary Award, a traveling award that goes to the winner of this contest. Established in 1985 by the respective alumni departments at BGSU and KSU, the Anniversary Award commemorates the founding of BGSU and KSU in 1910. The Anniversary Award commemorates the founding of both institutions, which occurred in 1910 as a result of the Lowry Bill. The award was first given out in 1985 to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the founding of each school. The rivalry has overall been lop-sided, with Bowling Green winning 25 of the 34 meetings.
• Bowling Green has won two of its last four games in the series at Doyt Perry Stadium.Â
Falcons Top Western Michigan For third-straight Win
• Bowling Green defeated Western Michigan, 13-9, last time out. It was 16th time in program history Bowling Green won a game with 13 or fewer points. It was also the first time it happened since the 2011 Temple game (W, 13-10).
• The win gave BGSU its most season wins (5) and MAC wins (4) since 2015 when BGSU went 10-4 overall and 7-1 in MAC play.
• Bowling Green's three-game winning streak is its longest since 2016 when the Falcons won the last three games of the season.
Bowling Green Is Getting to the Quarterback
• In records dating back to 1990, BGSU is tied for the third-most team sacks over the past 33 seasons. BGSU cracked the top-5 during that span in just eight games, while the other teams on the list all played in bowl games, with three playing for a MAC championship. The 1992 and 2013 teams won the MAC championship.
• BGSU all-time career sack leader Kevin O'Brien had 19 of those 38 team sacks in 1992.
• BGSU is one of 50 FBS programs since 2000 to have at least 33 team sacks through the first nine games of the season.Â
Bowling GreeN's Defense Has been Standing up During Winning Streak
• After allowing 492.3 yards per game over the first six games of the season, BGSU's defense has locked down the past three games. During wins over Miami (OH), Central Michigan and Western Michigan, BGSU has allowed an average of 271.0 yards.
• BGSU held Miami (OH) to 189 yards of total offense. It was just the 10th time since 2000 (second time this season, vs. Cincinnati) that the RedHawks were held under 190 yards of total offense.Â
• BGSU held Miami (OH) under 200 yards of total offense, which is the third time the Falcons have done that to an opponent under Scot Loeffler. It was the first time since the 2019 Akron game. Bowling Green under Loeffler is 3-0 in those games.Â
• Bowling Green allowed Miami (OH) to just 10 first downs. BGSU is 4-0 under Scot Loeffler when the opponent has 10 or fewer first downs.
• BGSU held CMU running backs to just 20 rushing yards and 60 of the Chippewas 102 rushing yards came on a scamper by the QB via a broken play.
• BGSU held Western Michigan to 91 yards of total offense in the first half. WMU finished with 318 yards of total offense.
Rushing Game On the Rise for the Falcons
• Bowling Green received 101 rushing yards on 18 carries by Jaison Patterson at Central Michigan. It was BGSU's first 100-yard rusher since Terion Stewart at Buffalo in 2021 (Oct. 30).
• Bowling Green rushed for 176 yards against Miami (OH), which was the most the RedHawks have given up all year until WMU went for 181 last time out. The RedHawks entered the game No. 9 in the nation in rush defense, allowing 88.8 rushing yards per game.
• BGSU rushed for 130 yards against WMU.
Bacon Sizzling for BGSU
• S Chris Bacon leads BGSU with 55 tackles, which ranks No. 9 in the MAC among defensive backs. He is also No. 34 in the nation among defensive backs in tackles.
• Bacon transferred to BGSU as a grad transfer from Georgia State.
• Bowling Green is No. 15 in the nation and No. 1 in the MAC with 14.18 yards per punt return.
• Jhaylin Embery (14.75 ypr) and Jake Rogers (12.30 ypr) both don't have enough returns to be ranked as individuals nationally. But both would be in the top 10 in the nation.
• BGSU is also No. 27 in the nation and No. 1 in the MAC in punt return defense (4.15).
• BGSU is one of four schools in the nation to be in the Top-30 in punt returns and punt defense. Baylor, Houston and South Carolina are the others.
Broden Reaches career Receiving Mark
• WR Tyrone Broden became the 40th Falcon all-time to notch 1,000-career receiving yards in program history last time out against Western Michigan.
• Broden currently has 1,001 career receiving yards. He became the first Falcon to reach the plateau since current Buffalo Bills tight end Quintin Morris reached the mark in 2019.
BGSU Has Two Other 1,000-Yard Receiver
• With Broden passing the 1,000 career receiving yards plateau, he joins two other Falcons that have already reached that milestone.
• WR CJ Lewis has 78 career receptions for 1,141 receiving yards and eight touchdowns.
• WR Odieu Hiliare has 137 career receptions for 1,791 receiving yards and 17 touchdowns.
• Lewis (Boston College) and Hiliare (Alabama A&M) both joined BGSU this year.
