November 09, 2022 | Football
Marquez Cooper ran for 93 yards, while Collin Schlee threw for 214 yards and three touchdowns for the Golden Flashes (4-6, 3-3 MAC).
The Falcons (5-5, 4-2 MAC) got on the board on Matt McDonald's third-quarter touchdown pass to Tyrone Broden, cutting the KSU lead to 23-7, but BGSU could not draw any closer.
The visitors had slim advantages of 25-21 in first downs and 415-311 in total offense, and BGSU won the time-of-possession battle, holding the ball for 34:02.
HOW IT HAPPENED
• Kent State won the opening coin toss and deferred to the second half. Bowling Green elected to receive the opening kick and defend the south end zone.Â
• The short opening kickoff was muffed and recovered by the Flashes at the BGSU 24-yard line to begin the game. But, the Falcons' defense held, and KSU missed a field-goal attempt from 37 yards out.Â
• On the Falcons' opening drive, Matt McDonald found Christian Sims for a 22-yard gain to move the ball near midfield. BGSU crossed into KSU territory, but turned the ball over on downs.
• The Golden Flashes moved down the field on the next drive, reaching the red zone. But, the Falcon defense held once again, forcing a turnover on downs.Â
• Later in the first quarter, the Falcons defense came through once again, as DJ Taylor was able to bring down a deflection for his second interception of the season.
• KSU got on the board, however, as Collin Schlee found Bryan Bradford for a 14-yard score on the first play of the second quarter.Â
• The Flashes added to the lead when Schlee called his own number and scored from four yards out with 4:43 left before halftime. And, KSU regained possession and scored on a Schlee TD toss to Devontez Walker with 2:02 left before the intermission. The visitors went for two and were unsuccessful, making the score 20-0 at the half.
• On the first drive of the second half, the Falcons defense stuffed a fourth down conversion to force a turnover on downs.
• The Flashes extended the lead on a field goal midway through the third quarter. The Falcons responded on the next drive, marching 68 yards down the field. McDonald found Tyrone Broden for a catch-and-run 24-yard TD, cutting the KSU lead to 23-6.
• Schlee found Walker for another score in the fourth quarter, and after an Andrew Glass field goal, a pick-six capped the scoring for the Flashes.Â

GAME NOTES
• ILB DJ Taylor picked off his second interception of the season (and career) near the end of the first quarter. He deflected the ball up and won the jump ball.
• WR Tyrone Broden finished with a career-high eight receptions.
• Broden also recorded his fifth touchdown reception of the season and 10th of his career in the third quarter.
• QB Matt McDonald finished with 246 passing yards. It marked the sixth time this season and the 15th time in his career that McDonald threw for 200+ yards.
• With his passing touchdown, McDonald moves into a three-way tie at No. 16 on the BGSU's single-season list. He shares spot with Erik White who reached the number in 1991 and 1992.
• With eight receptions, WR Odieu Hiliare extends his active streak with at least one reception to 32-straight games.
• "The fact of the matter is that these games, you can't have missed opportunities. They come down to four or five plays, and when you're playing good people the way that we're going to play good people these next couple weeks, you got to make the plays when the plays present themselves, and that's just where we're at." - Head Coach Scot Loeffler
UP NEXT
• The Falcons hit the road for the final two games of the regular season, beginning with a short trip north to battle Toledo next Tuesday (Nov. 15). That contest is scheduled to begin shortly after 7 p.m. at the Glass Bowl.
