Falcons Declaw Jaguars, 84-70, to Tie School-Record Start

Hampton has 23 points, 5 steals as BGSU moves to 8-1
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – The Bowling Green State University women's basketball team improved to 8-1 on the season with an 84-70 win at IUPUI Thursday evening (Dec. 15). The non-conference matchup took place at IUPUI Gymnasium ("The Jungle").
Nyla Hampton paced the Falcons at both ends of the floor, with game-high totals of 23 points and five steals as BGSU tied the program record for best start to a season. Jocelyn Tate chipped in with 14 points for the Orange and Brown.
Allison Day and Sophie Dziekan each scored 12 points in the win. Day went 5-for-7 from the floor and had a team-leading four assists, while Dziekan had her 12 points – a career-high total – in just 13 minutes, and tied Tate for team honors with six rebounds.
Elissa Brett had nine points, going 3-for-4 from three-point land.
The Falcons forced the Jaguars (4-6) into 21 turnovers on the night, while committing only nine themselves. BGSU enjoyed advantages of 30-9 in points off turnovers and 58-32 in points in the paint.
BGSU has won six-straight games, and the Falcons are now 5-1 in road games this season.
Jazmyn Turner, a transfer from Ball State, went a perfect 7-for-7 from the field en route to a team-leading 17 points for the Jags, while Akron transfer Destiny Perkins scored 15.

NOTE OF THE NIGHT
• BGSU, as mentioned, tied the school record for best start to a season. The Falcons are 8-1 for the seventh time in program history.
• The 1974-75 team was the first BG club to get off to an 8-1 start to a season. That record was matched by the 1991-92 team, along with the 2005-06, 2010-11, 2013-14 and 2020-21 clubs.
• That '20-21 team, coached by Robyn Fralick, went on to win the Mid-American Conference regular-season title.
BONUS NOTE OF THE NIGHT
• Thursday marked the ninth time in as many games this season that BG had fewer turnovers than the opponent. BGSU, as mentioned, committed just nine turnovers at IUPUI, while forcing the Jags into 21.
• The Falcons have forced the opponents into a total of 197 turnovers this season, an average of 21.9 per game, while committing just 106 (11.8 per game) themselves.

FIRST QUARTER
• For the second-straight game, BGSU never trailed, and the Falcons led for the game's final 39-plus minutes. After a Jocelyn Tate steal, Tate cut to the basket and took a pass from Allison Day for a layup. Day drew a foul from IUPUI's Jazmyn Turner – Turner's second in the game's first 89 seconds – and hit a pair of free throws to double the BG lead.
• Rachel Kent's three-pointer got the Jags on the board, but Day's step-through layup gave the Falcons a 6-3 lead. Amy Velasco hit a floater, and Sophie Dziekan backed her defender down, hitting a shot off glass to give BG a 10-5 edge.
• Nyla Hampton's steal and layup was answered by a Destiny Perkins three-pointer, but Dziekan came right back with a bucket, and after a media timeout, Lexi Fleming fed Dziekan for another hoop and a 16-8 lead.
• The teams traded points for the remainder of the quarter, with Hampton scoring BGSU's last three field goals of the period. Her final shot off glass gave the Orange and Brown a seven-point advantage, 22-15.
SECOND QUARTER
• BGSU extended the lead in the first few minutes of the period, as Hampton lobbed the ball inside to Tate for a layup, and a Velasco steal resulted in another Tate hoop. The Jags, trailing by a 26-15 score, used a timeout.
• Logan Lewis knocked down a three-pointer for the hosts, but BG then scored the next six points. Dziekan made a step-through layup, then laid the ball off to a cutting Tate for another hoop. When Fleming stole the ball and sailed in for a layup and a 32-18 lead, as the Jags took another timeout.
• Then, however, the hosts went on an 11-0 run to get right back into the game. Perkins scored five-straight points, and a Turner layup prompted a BG timeout. Ali Berg's layup cut the Falcons' lead to just three points, before Kadie Hempfling's corner three gave the visitors a 35-29 lead. Perkins answered with back-to-back hoops to slice the margin to two points, but BGSU again had a response, as Velasco drove and hit a reverse layup. In the final minute of the half, Brett took a Tate pass and drained a three-point try, giving the Falcons a 40-35 lead at the intermission.
THIRD QUARTER
• Day opened the second half with a layup, and after a Hampton steal, some nifty passing led to Morgan Sharps finding a wide-open Tate for a layup and a 44-35 lead.
• Tate and Dziekan hit layups over the next few minutes, while Hampton knocked down a pair of free throws, but a Perkins three and a Turner layup kept the Jags within striking distance. And, when Natalie Andersen hit a long two-pointer, the hosts were within just four points. But, Hampton answered with a driving layup for a 54-48 BG lead.
• The Falcons extended the lead to nine points after Brett hit a corner three and Hampton picked up another steal and layup. The hosts used a timeout with 2:12 to go in the period.
• Abby Wolterman connected from the arc, but Tate hit two free throws with 48.1 seconds left in the quarter, and Hampton drove and hit a floater to give the Falcons a 63-53 lead after three periods.
FOURTH QUARTER
• The lead was nine points early in the final period, before Sharps scored four quick points. First, she split a pair of defenders for a layup. Then, she stole the ball right back and hit a layup for a 70-57 lead with 8:11 to go.
• A Hampton layup was followed by back-to-back bankers from Day. When Day found Brett for a three-pointer, the Falcons had a 17-point lead, 79-62, with 4:24 remaining.
• Day sank a short-corner jumper, then fed Hampton for a left-side three-pointer to cap the Falcons' scoring effort.
STATS, NOTES & NUMBERS
• BGSU shot 49.3 percent for the game, while IUPUI shot 54.2% from the field. But, the Falcons were +7 (35-28) on the boards and +12 in the turnover department, meaning that the Falcons took 71 shots to the Jags' 48.
• BGSU hit 35 total field goals, and the Falcons went 5-of-15 from three-point land. IUPUI was 8-for-22 from the arc and made 26 total field goals on the night.
• The Falcons had 14 steals and a 30-9 advantage in points off turnovers. BG also had advantages in points in the paint (58-32), second-chance points (11-2), bench scoring (21-9) and fast-break points (11-10).
• Day led all players with a plus/minus rating of +26, with Brett at +22 and Hampton +19.
