SOUTH PADRE ISLAND, Texas – For the Bowling Green State University women's basketball team, the storyline has been a familiar one: Take an early lead, then keep that lead for the remainder of the game.
On Monday afternoon (Dec. 19), the Falcons followed that script to a T. BGSU took control in the game's opening minutes, downing Texas A&M University-Commerce by a 90-61 final. The game, the opening contest in the UTRGV South Padre Island Classic, was held at the South Padre Island Convention Centre.
A total of 13 different players scored for the Falcons (9-1), who have won seven-straight games. Eight of those BGSU players scored at least five points on Monday.
Nyla Hampton and Morgan Sharps led the way with 17 points apiece, with Lexi Fleming adding 15. Hampton and Sharps each went 7-for-10 from the floor, with Hampton adding six assists and a game-high four steals in the win.
Sharps and Fleming each went 3-for-5 from the three-point line, with Flaming adding four assists. Eight different Falcons, including Sharps, had two or more assists in the contest.
In fact, BGSU had 30 assists – the fourth-highest single-game total in school history – on 38 field goals.
The Falcons forced the Lions into 24 turnovers, and BG had a team total of 14 steals along with a 32-9 advantage in points off of turnovers.
Laila Lawrence scored 16 points to pace three double-digit scorers for the Lions (2-8).
The Falcons, as mentioned, led throughout. BGSU had leads of 10 points after one quarter and 14 points at the half. Early in the third period, the Orange and Brown went on a 15-2 run to take a 26-point lead, at 63-37.
The Lions responded by scoring the game's next six points, but the Falcons responded to that run with a run of their own. Transition buckets by Kadie Hempfling and Fleming began an 11-0 BG run to end the third quarter, and the Falcons had a 74-41 lead after 30 minutes.

QUOTING COACH FRALICK
"It was a great team win on the road. It's been a great experience coming to Texas and being at this tournament. Today, I thought we really settled in, especially in the third quarter. We did a great job of putting together a lot of consecutive possessions."
FIRST QUARTER
• Nyla Hampton and Jocelyn Tate teamed up to give the Falcons an early lead.
Hampton knocked down a pair of free throws, then hit a layup after a Tate steal just over 30 seconds into the contest. Tate hit a driving layup before a Hampton pull-up jumper gave the Falcons an 8-4 advantage.
• Hampton's long pass found Elissa Brett for a left-wing three-pointer and an 11-6 lead, and Amy Velasco fed Tate for a layup and Morgan Sharps for a three-pointer.
• The Lions answered each of those hoops with scores of their own, but Tate stole the ball and hit a layup, then fed Sharps for another triple and a 21-11 lead. Allison Day put a teammate's missed shot back up and in, and with time winding down in the period, Hampton drove and banked a shot off glass and through the hoop for a 25-15 BGSU lead.
SECOND QUARTER
• Lexi Fleming hit a long three-pointer before Day found a pair of cutting teammates on back-to-back possessions. The post player assisted Brett, then Fleming, for buckets in the paint, and the Falcons had a 32-16 lead.
• TAMUC's Dorian Norris answered with a corner three, but Fleming quickly found Day running the floor for a layup. DesiRay Kernal hit a shot off glass, but Fleming spotted Sophie Dziekan for an open layup and a 36-21 lead.

THIRD QUARTER
• Hampton's layup was answered by a Kernal three-pointer, but the Falcons then went on a run. Day's free throws began an 8-0 run that was part of a larger 15-2 stretch. Hampton hit a layup after a steal, and a Tate steal resulted in a Hampton-to-Sharps pass for another fast-break layup.
• The Lions used a timeout, but a Brett steal after that break led to another Sharps bucket and a 56-35 lead.
• TAMUC stopped that 8-0 run, but Hampton drove and bounced a pass to an open Dzieken for a layup, before Brett spotted Dziekan for another BG bucket. Then, Sharps hit a three-pointer to give the Orange and Brown a 63-37 lead.
• The Lions scored the next six points, with Dyani Robinson's pull-up jumper cutting the lead to 20 points, but BG ran the floor, with Hempfling hitting a layup. Sharps, who had found Hempfling for that hoop, then whipped a long pass to Fleming for a layup, and a Fleming steal led to a 3-on-0 break and a Sharps layup.
• Fleming took a Jasmine Fearne pass and hit a corner three, and Olivia Hill's steal resulted in a Fleming layup, an 11-0 run and a 74-43 lead after 30 minutes.
FOURTH QUARTER
