THE OPENING TIP – STREAKS, STORYLINES AND SIDEBARS
• The Falcons are looking to bounce back after Wednesday's (Feb. 23) 72-70 loss to Akron. Kadie Hempfling exploded for a career-high 29 points and Amy Velasco hit a layup to tie the game with 10.5 seconds to go. But, after an Akron three-point try clanged off of the left side of the rim, Jordan Dawson's putback with 1.2 seconds remaining gave the visitors the victory.
• The UA game was BG's sixth in a 12-day span. Two nights earlier (Feb. 21), Nyla Hampton scored 12 of her career-high 23 points in the fourth quarter as the Falcons picked up a 77-67 win at Kent State.
• BGSU is tied for eighth place in the MAC standings entering weekend action, and only eight teams will qualify for the conference tournament. BG is tied with Western Michigan, but the fourth- through ninth-place teams are separated by just a game and a half. Ball State is 9-7 in MAC play, while Kent State and Northern Illinois each are 9-8, Ohio 8-8 and BGSU and WMU 8-9.
• BG is 22-13 in MAC regular-season games since the start of the 2020-21 season, after going 8-46 in the previous three seasons (2017-18 to '19-20). That 22-13 record includes a 13-6 mark at the Stroh and a 9-7 ledger in league road games.
• Kenzie Lewis had a season-high 11 points on Monday at Kent State, then scored 10 points (while adding a BGSU season-high 14 rebounds) Wednesday vs. Akron. Lewis has been contributing in multiple ways all season long, but has stepped up her shooting – and her scoring – as of late. She has made 17-of-23 shots (73.9%) from the floor over the last five games, and has averaged 7.8 points, 7.0 rebounds and 4.4 assists in that span.
• Madisen Parker recently broke the school record for games played, and she is moving up another BGSU career list. Parker has hit 237 three-point field goals in her career. She recently passed Tracy Pontius (235 treys from 2007-11) to move into third place on that BG list, and is just four triples behind second-place Sydney Lambert (241 from 2015-19).
• As a team, the Falcons have made at least one three-point field goal in 545 consecutive games over the last 17 years. That is the fifth-longest active streak in the nation.
• Hempfling has started 115 career games at BGSU, and is tied for sixth on that school list. If she remains in the starting lineup, she will move into the top-five in school history in that category by the end of the regular season.
• Hempfling is also ranked on the BGSU career lists for scoring (23rd), rebounding (11th), assists (sixth) and three-pointers made (16th). Parker recently broke into the top 40 on the BG career scoring chart, and currently is 32nd.
• Entering Saturday's game, Morgan Sharps leads the MAC – and is fifth in the nation – in three-point field-goal percentage. She has hit 45.7% of her long-distance shots this season.
A QUICK LOOK AT THE REDHAWKS
• Miami is 8-18 on the season, and the RedHawks have a 4-13 record in MAC play. MU is looking to snap a four-game losing streak. Two of those setbacks have come by single digits, including Wednesday's 61-52 loss to Kent State. The RedHawks are 5-8 at home and 3-10 on the road this season. In conference play, MU is 3-6 in Oxford and 1-7 at hostile venues.
• Peyton Scott leads the team in both scoring and rebounding, with 19.7 points and 6.0 boards per game, and she also paces the RecHawks with 3.8 assists per outing. Ivy Wolf (11.3 ppg) and Edyn Battle (10.6 ppg) each are scoring in double figures this season. Head coach DeUnna Hendrix and the RedHawks have already doubled last year's overall win total, as the 2020-21 team went 4-20 overall and 3-17 in the MAC.
THE SERIES
• The Falcons lead Miami, 55-34, in the all-time series, and BGSU has captured the last four meetings, including a 94-61 decision at the Stroh just under two weeks ago (Feb. 14, 2022). In last season's two matchups, the Falcons picked up a narrow 71-66 victory at home (Dec. 22, 2020) and a 35-point triumph (87-52; Jan. 23, 2021) in Oxford. Miami had won six-straight meetings prior to BG's current four-game series winning streak. BGSU is 26-16 in home games, 23-17 in road contests and 6-1 in neutral-site events vs. the RedHawks over the years.
DOWN THE ROAD
• Following the Miami contest, the Falcons wrap up the home portion of the schedule with a Wednesday (March 2) matchup vs. Kent State. Tipoff is set for 7:00 p.m. at the Stroh.
• Then, BG ends the regular season at Buffalo next Saturday (March 5), with tipoff at 2:00 p.m. at Alumni Arena.
