BGSU will be the number-six seed for the conference tourney, which begins Wednesday in Cleveland
BUFFALO, N.Y. – A big third quarter by the University at Buffalo was too much for the Bowling Green State University women's basketball team to overcome on Saturday afternoon (March 5), as the Bulls picked up an 81-62 win over the Falcons. The Mid-American Conference contest was held at Alumni Arena
Senior Kadie Hempfling had 14 points on 6-of-7 shooting for the Falcons (15-14, 10-10 MAC), while sophomore Nyla Hampton scored 12 points and tied for game honors with four steals.
The Falcons will be the number-six seed for the MAC Tournament, and BGSU will take on third-seeded Akron in quarterfinal-round action on Wednesday (March 9).
The Bulls (22-8, 16-4 MAC) got a game-high 20 points from Georgia Woolley, while Summer Hemphill had 18 points and a game-best 12 rebounds.
The Falcons never led, but after UB began the game on a 10-0 run, BGSU answered with a nine-point surge. The Orange and Brown held the Bulls to just 13 second-quarter points, and BG tied the game on senior Madisen Parker's three-pointer at the halftime buzzer, tying the score at 35-all as the teams headed into the intermission.
But, UB held the Falcons scoreless for the first five minutes of the second half, scoring the first 11 points of the third quarter to take control.
FIRST QUARTER
• The Bulls got off to a fast start, scoring the first 10 points of the game. Summer Hemphill scored back-to-back buckets to make it a 10-0 contest, and BGSU used a timeout at the 7:48 mark.
• But, out of that break, Jocelyn Tate grabbed an offensive rebound and whipped a pass to Madisen Parker for a three-pointer. Then, after the Falcons' second steal in under a minute's time, Parker fed Elissa Brett for a triple. When Amy Velaseo grabbed a defensive rebound, totok a few dribbles and fired a long pass to Brett for another trey, BGSU had a 9-0 run.
• Nyla Hampton hit a pull-up jumper to put BG within 12-11, but UB responded with a 5-0 run. Sophie Dziekan's nifty bounce pass resulted in a Kadie Hempfling layup, and Hempfling then found Brett on a baseline cut for another layup. Hempfling spotted Velasco heading toward the hoop, and the freshman was fouled and knocked down a pair of free throws with just 6.6 seconds on the clock. But Dominique Camp's prayer was answered, as her three-point try banked off the glass and in as the buzzer sounded, giving UB a 22-17 lead after 10 minutes.
SECOND QUARTER
• UB opened the quarter with a three-pointer, but Parker drove the baseline and found Hempfling for a layup. After Hempfill answered with a pair of hoops for the hosts, Velasco spotted Hampton for a three-pointer in transition. Then, Hampton hit Morgan Sharps for a three-point hoop, and UB's lead was down to four points, at 29-25.
• Dziekan's offensive board and putback cut the deficit in half, and Tate came up with a steal and hit a banker to give the Falcons a 10-0 run and tie the score.
• Camp's steal and layup, however, began a 6-0 surge for the hosts, but Velasco's pass resulted in Hempfling's straightaway trey, and Velasco then fed Parker for a buzzer-beating trifecta that tied the score, 35-35, at the break.
THIRD QUARTER
• Neither team scored for over a minute to begin the second half, but Georgia Woolley's layup with just over a minutes gone gave the Bulls the lead and began an 11-0 run.
• BGSU would not score until Hampton's three-point play that bridged the 4:47 media timeout. The sophomore's free throw cut the deficit to eight points, but that was as close as BG would get the rest of the way.
• Olivia Hill assisted Hempfling for jumpers on back-to-back possessions, and Hill then was fouled and knocked down both of her free-throw tries, cutting UB's lead to 55-44 with 1:41 left in the period.
• Kenzie Lewis, who battled foul trouble for much of the day, hit two tosses just 24 seconds later to get BG within 11 points once again, but the Bulls ended the quarter on a 6-0 run, with Hemphill's shots from the stripe giving the Blue and White a 63-46 lead after 30 minutes.
FOURTH QUARTER
• Hampton's floater opened the scoring in the final quarter, but the Bulls scored the game's next eight points to take control. Parker drilled her third triple of the afternoon, and Hempfling connected from the arc moments later, but it was not enough.
• Tate fed Hampton for a second-chance jumper, then hit an and-one banker to cap the scoring.
STATS, NOTES & NUMBERS
• Hempfling, as mentioned, went 6-of-7 from the field en route to 14 points. She added six rebounds and three assists.
• Hampton had 12 points and tied for game honors with four steals, while Parker hit three shots from the arc and scored nine points.
• Brett had eight points and six boards, and Sharps scored six points on the day. Tate had five points, five rebounds, three assists and a pair of steals.
• The Bulls shot 44.6% from the field to the Falcons' 36.7%. BGSU went 10-of-24 from the arc while holding UB to just a 2-for-13 long-range effort, but the Bulls had a 47-30 rebounding advantage and a 22-15 lead in second-chance points.
• Olivia Hill had career-high totals of three assists and two steals against the Bulls, and also scored two points and grabbed a pair of offensive rebounds.
• UB's Dyaisha Fair entered the game ranked fourth in the nation in scoring, at 23.9 points per game, and she had scored 40 points in the first meeting with the Falcons this season. On Saturday, though, BGSU held Fair to just two points on 1-of-13 shooting in just under 35 minutes of action.
