Falcons put three-game win streak on the line

• The BGSU softball team, coming off of a three-game weekend sweep, hits the road for some midweek #MACtion. Head coach Sarah Willis and the Falcons head to Kalamazoo to face Western Michigan University in a Tuesday (April 5) single game and a Wednesday (April 6) twinbill at Ebert Field.
• The Falcons are 17-9 overall and 5-3 in MAC play after sweeping Toledo at Meserve Field over the weekend. BGSU outscored the Rockets by an 18-4 count in the three games.
• BGSU was ranked 120th in the nation in the RPI as of Monday morning (April 4).
• The Falcons hit .276 as a team in the UT series, and BGSU had an on-base percentage of .415 and a slugging pct. of .421 in the three wins. BG batters drew 17 walks in the sweep.
• Freshman Wynnie Reid had a stellar series, hitting .714 with an OBP of .800 and a 1.143 slugging pct. Reid was 5-for-7 with a double, a triple, three walks and three runs in the series. Greta L'Esperance hit .400 with three walks and five runs in the three wins.
• Falcon phenom Payton Gottshall earned the win in all three games, and had an ERA of just 0.42 vs. the Rockets. She fired a two-hitter in the opener and a one-hit shutout in game two, then came back to fire 2 2/3 innings of scoreless relief in a come-from-behind win in the final game of the weekend.
• Reid is hitting .364 on the season, while L'Esperance and Reagan Williamson are batting .352 and .329, respectively. Peyton Dolejs is hitting .317 and Sophie Weber .304.
• Dolejs has nine extra-base hits and Williamson eight on the year. Dolejs has a team-leading 21 RBI while Williamson has driven in 18 runs this spring.
• L'Esperance leads the Falcons in stolen bases (18) and runs scored (27). Roughly halfway through the 2022 schedule, she is already tied for ninth on the BGSU single-season steals list.
• Williamson (.440), L'Esperance (.422), Reid (.421) and Dolejs (.406) all have an on-base pct. of .400 or higher. Williamson and Lexi Carver each have 16 walks to tie for the team lead, and Williamson also paces the Falcons with five homers, 42 total bases and a .575 slugging pct.
• Last season, Williamson had two hits (both singles) and two RBI in 26 at-bats. This year, in 65 at-bats, Williamson has four homers and 16 RBI. Dolejs has her 20 RBI this spring after driving in 10 runs last season.
• Sarah Gonzalez, in her fifth year as a full-time starter, has played in 199 of BGSU's 200 games since her arrival on campus. She has made 198 starts, which placed her 10th on the school career list.
• Gonzalez is also ranked among the top all-time Falcons in career homers (13, T-14th), walks (62, T-eighth), sacrifice flies (eight, T-third) and sac bunts (20, T-15th).
• L'Esperance now has 47 steals in her BGSU career, and is ranked fourth in school history. She has a career batting average of .350, good for third on that BGSU chart.
• In the circle, Gottshall has a record of 12-6, a 1.37 ERA and 176 strikeouts in 107 1/3 innings. Gottshall has been named MAC Pitcher of the Week three times this season to date.
• Kiara Hurley is 3-2 with three saves and a 3.57 ERA, while Hannah Davies has a 2-1 record and an ERA of 4.82. Hurley's save total is the highest by a BGSU player in four years. Sydney Stepp has an ERA of 1.75 in 12 innings this season.
• Gottshall currently leads the MAC in six statistical categories, and is ninth in the nation in strikeouts, 10th in strikeouts per seven innings (11.5), 16th in strikeout-to-walk ratio and 17th in shutouts. Her total of 176 strikeouts already places her sixth on that BG single-season list.
• Offensively, L'Esperance leads the MAC in runs, total stolen bases and steals per game, and ranks 15th in the country in the latter category.
• Carver paces the MAC in sac bunts per contest, while Bailey Sample leads the league in hit-by-pitches and Hurley tops the conference in saves.
• As a team, the Falcons top the conference in ERA (2.37), strikeout-to-walk ratio (4.11) and winning pct. (.654), while ranking second in the MAC in on-base pct. (.367) and shutouts (five) and third in batting average (.272) and runs per game (4.77).
• Gottshall struck out a school-record 282 batters last season, and obliterated the BGSU record for strikeouts per seven innings, averaging 9.79 (the old record was 8.46). Gottshall went 20-12 last spring, becoming just the fourth pitcher in school history, and the first since 1995, to win 20 games in a season.
• Gottshall is now ranked second in school history with 586 career strikeouts, in just 396 innings pitched. She passed Hayley Wiemer (557 strikeouts) in the UT series, and now trails only BGSU Hall-of-Famer Liz Vrabel (768 strikeouts) on that list. Vrabel and Wiemer pitched 754 2/3 and 693 2/3 career innings, respectively.
• In just her third year with the Falcons (including a shortened 2020 season), Gottshall already has added her name to numerous BGSU career lists, including strikeouts per seven innings (10.36, first), strikeouts (second), winning pct. (.652 [43-23], fourth), ERA (1.75, sixth), wins (43, T-sixth), shutouts (16, T-seventh), complete games (46, eighth), saves (three, T-13th), innings pitched (14) and games started (55, 16th). In her first season at BGSU, Hurley is tied with Gottshall for 13th on the saves list.
• Willis and assistant coaches Candace Fenton-Bockbrader and Michaela Bauer welcomed back a total of 15 letterwinners, including six positional starters, from last year's team. Additionally, four of the five pitchers who saw action last season returned, and that quartet combined to pitch 98% of the team's innings a year ago. The returnees also combined for 100% of the Falcons' wins.
• BGSU ended the 2021 season with an overall record of 27-27, and the Falcons went 19-20 in MAC action. BG, picked to finish eighth in the MAC in the preseason coaches' poll, ended the season in fifth place in the 11-team league. BGSU was one of two conference teams to finish as many as three places higher than predicted.
• The 2021 Falcons finished with the program's highest winning percentage in MAC play since 2012, and BGSU's overall total of 27 wins was the highest since the 2013 campaign.
• BG was picked to place fourth in the MAC in 2022, according to the preseason coaches' poll.
• Western Michigan is 13-18 overall and 3-3 in MAC play, and the Broncos have won five of the last eight games. Reily Galloway leads the team in both hitting and pitching. She has a .337 batting average and also paces the Broncos with six homers (tied for first) and 19 RBI. In the circle, Galloway is 8-9 with a 1.69 ERA and 157 strikeouts in 103 innings pitched. Last season, the Broncos went 15-37 overall and 11-27 in conference. Kathy Leitke, in her 22nd year in Kalamazoo, is the longest tenured and winningest coach in WMU softball history.
• BGSU trails WMU, 55-37, in the all-time series, but the Falcons took three of last seasons' four meetings. BG swept the Broncos in a DH at Meserve (May 4, 2021), and the teams split a twinbill in Kalamazoo eight days later.
• Following the WMU series, BGSU will return to Northwest Ohio for a five-game homestand, beginning with a weekend set vs. Buffalo. The Falcons and Bulls will play a Saturday (April 9) twinbill at 1:00 p.m. and a Sunday (April 10) single game, beginning at 12:00 p.m.
