Buffalo Comes to Town as BGSU Begins Five-Game Homestand

BG battles Bulls in Saturday single game, Sunday double-dip

• The BGSU softball team returns to Meserve Field for the next five games. Head coach Sarah Willis and the Falcons meet Buffalo in a weekend series, with the teams slated to play a Saturday (April 9) single game and a Sunday (April 10) doubleheader. Then, BG will step outside of Mid-American Conference play for a Tuesday evening (April 12) twinbill vs. Detroit Mercy.
• The Falcons are 18-10 overall and 6-4 in MAC action. After sweeping Toledo in a three-game series at Meserve Field last weekend, BGSU split a pair of games at Western Michigan. The Falcons picked up a 4-2 decision on Tuesday (April 5) before seeing a four-game winning streak snapped with a 5-1 setback the next day.
• BGSU was ranked 124th in the nation in the RPI as of Friday morning (April 8).
• Reagan Williamson and Greta L'Esperance each went 3-for-7 in the two games vs. WMU. Williamson had a pair of doubles and two RBI in the opener, while L'Esperance was a perfect 5-for-5 in stolen-base attempts in the two games.
• Wynnie Reid had a stellar series against Toledo, hitting .714 with an OBP of .800 and a 1.143 slugging pct. Reid was 5-for-7 with a double, a triple, three walks and three runs in the series L'Esperance hit .400 with three walks and five runs in the three wins.
• L'Esperance and Williamson are hitting .358 and .338, respectively, on the season, while Sophie Weber is batting .319 and Reid .316. Peyton Dolejs, one of three Falcons (along with L'Esperance and Williamson) to start all 28 games, is hitting .299 on the year.
• Williamson has 10 has nine extra-base hits and Dolejs nine. Dolejs has a team-leading 21 RBI while Williamson has driven in 20 runs this spring.
• L'Esperance leads the Falcons in stolen bases (23) and runs scored (29). Roughly halfway through the 2022 schedule, she is already tied for sixth on the BGSU single-season steals list.
• Williamson (.439), L'Esperance (.427) and Lexi Carver (.412) all have an on-base pct. of .400 or higher. Carver leads the team with 18 walks, while Williamson has 16 and Dolejs 15. Williamson also paces the Falcons with five homers, 47 total bases and a .588 slugging pct.
• Last season, Williamson had two hits (both singles) and two RBI in 26 at-bats. This year, in 80 at-bats, she has five homers and 20 RBI. Dolejs has her 21 RBI this spring after driving in 10 runs last season.
• Sarah Gonzalez, in her fifth year as a full-time starter, has played in 201 of BGSU's 202 games since her arrival on campus. She has made 200 starts, which ties her for ninth on that school career list.
• Gonzalez is also ranked among the top all-time Falcons in career homers (13, T-14th), walks (62, T-eighth), sacrifice flies (eight, T-third) and sac bunts (20, T-15th).
• L'Esperance now has 52 steals in her BGSU career, and is ranked fourth in school history. She has a career batting average of .352, good for third on that BGSU chart.
• In the circle, Payton Gottshall has a record of 13-7, a 1.58 ERA and 191 strikeouts in 119 1/3 innings. Gottshall has been named MAC Pitcher of the Week four times this season to date.
• Gottshall has seen action in each of BGSU's last nine games and 14 of the last 15 contests.
• Kiara Hurley is 3-2 with three saves and a 3.57 ERA, while Hannah Davies has a 2-1 record and an ERA of 4.82. Hurley's save total is the highest by a BGSU player in four years. Sydney Stepp has an ERA of 1.62 in 13 innings this season.
• Gottshall currently leads the MAC in six statistical categories, and is 10th in the nation in both strikeouts and strikeouts per seven innings (11.5), 16th in strikeout-to-walk ratio and 17th in shutouts. Her total of 191 strikeouts already places her fourth on that BG single-season list.
• Offensively, L'Esperance leads the MAC in total stolen bases and steals per game, and ranks 13th in the country in the latter category. She is 32nd in the nation in runs per game.
• Carver paces the MAC in sac bunts per contest, while Bailey Sample leads the league in hit-by-pitches and Hurley tops the conference in saves.
• As a team, the Falcons lead the league in ERA (2.37), strikeout-to-walk ratio (4.11) and winning pct. (.654), while ranking second in the MAC in on-base pct. (.367) and shutouts (five) and third in runs per game (4.77).
• Buffalo is 14-11 overall, and the Bulls are in second place in the MAC with a 5-2 conference record. Brianna Castro and Alexis Lucyshyn are hitting .328 and .310, respectively. In the circle, Lucyshyn has an 8-4 record and a 3.40 ERA.
• Detroit Mercy is 1-24 overall and 1-11 in Horizon League play heading into a weekend series at Oakland. Taylor Gauthier is hitting .288, while Liz Murphy has made 16 starts in the circle.
