FUN FALCON FACTS
• BGSU enters the Detroit Mercy match with a record of 0-2-1. The Falcons suffered a 4-0 loss on the road against nationally-ranked Tennessee Wednesday night (Aug. 31). The teams battled through 50 scoreless minutes before the Lady Vols got on the scoreboard. Lili Berg made four saves on the night, while Kasey Hartmann made her BGSU debut, playing the final 17-plus minutes between the posts.
• The Falcons opened the season with a 2-0 loss to Michigan State at Cochrane Stadium (Aug. 18), then battled Cincinnati to a 1-1 draw at Cochrane one week later (Aug. 25). Berg had a total of 10 saves in those two contests.
• Freshman Brynn Gardner scored her first collegiate goal in the 71st minute of the UC match. That goal was set up by Lacee Bethea, who beat a pair of UC players as she made a long run from midfield into the box, then drew the goalkeeper toward her and slid a pass to a wide-open Gardner at the far post.
• Last week, it was announced that head coach Jimmy Walker has signed a multi-year contract extension. His contract now runs through the end of the 2025 season.
• BGSU has been picked to finish second in the Mid-American Conference this season, according to the preseason coaches poll. The Falcons also were picked to place second last fall, but wound up winning both the regular-season and tournament titles.
• The Falcons returned 14 letterwinners, including seven starters, from last season's club. The 2021 team went 11-7-3 overall and 8-2-1 in the MAC, and – as we just mentioned – BGSU won both the league regular-season and tournament titles.
• In 2021, BGSU achieved a feat that will be very difficult to repeat. The Falcons advanced to the NCAA Championships twice in the same calendar year. BGSU went 6-1-1 overall and 5-1-0 in the MAC in the spring, outscoring opponents, 17-3.
• Then, in the fall, the Falcons allowed just six goals in 13 total matches against MAC opposition, with nine shutouts in those 13 contests. BGSU outscored MAC foes, 17-2, over the final month of play (Oct. 7 to Nov. 7, spanning seven regular-season and the two MAC Tournament matches).
• Entering the UDM match, the Falcons have an overall record of 17-10-5 since Walker took the helm, and BGSU is 16-3-1 against MAC teams in that time. Since the beginning of the 2018 campaign, BGSU is 45-21-11 overall, 33-5-1 in MAC regular-season action and 40-5-3 in all games vs. league opposition.
SUCCESSFUL AT HOME
• The Falcons went a perfect 4-0-0 at Cochrane Stadium in the spring of 2021, with all four wins coming against MAC opponents. BGSU outscored the opposition, 10-1, in those four matches.
• And, BGSU was 6-3-2 at home last fall, including a 5-2-1 mark against MAC foes.
• BGSU will enter Sunday's Detroit Mercy matchup with a record of 35-8-6 at home since the start of the 2017 season. The Falcons are 28-4-3 against MAC teams at Cochrane Stadium in that time.
• In those 35 contests vs. conference competition, BGSU has outscored the opposition, 71-23.
THE OPPONENT
• Detroit Mercy enters Sunday's match with a 2-2-1 record. The Titans have wins over Florida Gulf Coast and Canisius, both by 2-1 scores, losses at Florida Atlantic and Central Michigan and a tie vs. Western Michigan. Sophia Blankenship has three of the team's seven goals this season to date, while Jazmine Scott has started the last four contests and has a 2.26 goals-against average and 23 saves. UDM is just one win away from matching last year's total, having gone 3-13-2 in 2021.
THE SERIES
• BGSU trails Detroit Mercy, 8-5-0, in the all-time series, but the Falcons have won the last two matches. Most recently, BGSU picked up a 3-1 win in the Motor City in 2017. The last meeting at Cochrane saw the Falcons earn a 1-0 win the previous year (Sept. 1, 2016). BGSU is 3-3-0 at home and 2-5-0 on the road vs. the Titans through the years.
UP NEXT
• The Falcons return to the road to face Valparaiso next Sunday (Sept. 11), with first touch at 4:00 p.m. That begins a September-ending stretch in which BGSU plays four of five matches on the road.
• The lone home match during those five games will be the MAC opener vs. Toledo on Thursday, Sept. 22.
