Kenna Converts in Kalamazoo, But Falcons Settle for 2-2 Draw
September 25, 2022 | Women's Soccer
Michigan native White now has 4 career goals vs. Broncos on the road
KALAMAZOO, Mich. – Kennedy White's scoring prowess in Kalamazoo continued, but the Bowling Green State University women's soccer team had to settle for a 2-2 draw with Western Michigan University on Sunday afternoon (Sept. 25). The Mid-American Conference matchup was held at the WMU Soccer Complex.
White scored both goals for the Falcons (2-3-3, 0-0-2 MAC), and the Michigan native has scored four goals in her three career matches – all on the road – vs. Western.
But, Jenna Blackburn scored one goal and set up another for the Broncos (1-4-4, 1-0-1 MAC).
For the second-straight MAC match, the Falcons fell behind twice, but battled back from 1-0 and 2-1 deficits to earn a draw.
Lili Berg made four saves in goal for the Orange and Brown, while Hannah Sargent was credited with three stops for the Broncos.

NOTE OF THE DAY
• With three goals over the past two matches, Kennedy White moved up five spots on the BGSU career goals list. She now has 21 career goals, tying her with Chelsee Washington (2016-19) for sixth place on that BGSU list.
• White now has 49 career points as a Falcon, tying her for 12th in BG history with Britt Anderson (2002-05).
QUOTING COACH JIMMY WALKER
"It was a disappointing result for what was a very solid performance. We did a lot of good things today offensively, but much like the Toledo game, we let ourselves down defensively on set pieces and when defending our penalty area.
"It was frustrating because we had the exact same outcome on Thursday against Toledo where we had a lot of possession, scored two goals and did not defend set pieces well. We have to learn from our experiences and stop conceding soft goals if we want to have success this season."
HIGHLIGHTS
• The Broncos fired a pair of shots on frame within the first 75 seconds of the match, but Lili Berg made both stops near the right post.
• WMU took the lead in the 10th minute off of a corner kick. The ball was headed away from the goal line by a BG player, and landed at the feet of the Broncos' Jenna Blackburn near the right corner of the six-yard box. She settled the ball and poked it into the far side of the net.
• Berg made her third save of the match on a Blackburn shot from outside the box just under a minute after the goal. The shot went through several players near the top of the 18, but Berg saw it all the way and made a diving stop.
• BGSU's first shot of the day came off of the boot of Kennedy White after a deflected ball fell to her feet in the box. But, WMU 'keeper Hannah Sargent was able to make the save of White's effort.
• White made no mistake with her second shot of the day, blasting a short pass from Brynn Gardner into the upper right corner of the goal. Gardner had seemingly been dispossessed of the ball after taking a pass from Maya Dean on the right side of the pitch. But, Gardner won the ball back from a pair of WMU players in the penalty area, and quickly slid the ball to a wide-open White, who put it into the net with a one-time finish.
• Jasmijn Dijsselhof made a nifty play in the 18, blocking what appeared to be a good scoring chance by the Broncos with just over five minutes left in the opening half.
• In the 53rd minute, WMU's Madi Canada fired a free kick on goal from distance. Berg made a nice leaping save, tipping the ball over the bar. Then, after the ensuing corner kick was deflected in the six-yard box, Berg plucked the ball out of the air to end the Bronco scoring threat.
• Off of a corner kick, a shot by Lacee Bethea was blocked away from the WMU goal area. Makenzie Ortman followed up with a shot that hit the left goalpost, and the ball caromed quickly toward White. White was able to get a foot on the ball, but could not direct the hard rebound on frame.
• The Broncos took the lead on a Bria Telemaque goal in the 71st minute. After a steal near midfield, Blackburn received a pass on the left side of the field, then centered it toward an open Telemaque just outside the 18. Telemaque fired a shot into the upper left corner of the net for a 2-1 Western advantage.
• White and the Falcons equalized in the 76th minute. Katie Cox played a ball from the right side into the center of the park, where Alaina Uncapher headed it into the path of White. White took a touch as she moved into the box with a pair of defenders on her, but the striker created enough space for a shot, and put that shot over Sargent and high into the far side of the goal.
• With 11 seconds to go, Uncapher was fouled approximately 35 yards from goal and a yellow card was issued to the Broncos. Dijsselhof played the free kick into the box as the public address announcer began the 10-second countdown, but as Brynn Gardner vied for positioning with a pair of WMU defenders, Sargent was able to grab Dijsselhof's diagonal ball on one hop as the final seconds ticked away.
STATS, NOTES & NUMBERS
• Kennedy White scored both BGSU goals on Sunday. She now has team-leading totals of six goals and 12 points, and has scored two-thirds of the Falcons' goals this season.
• White has played three career matches against Western Michigan – with all three contests taking place in Kalamazoo – and has scored four goals vs. the Broncos. White had the game-winning goal as both a freshman (Oct. 27, 2019) and a junior (Sept. 23, 2021) vs. Western. BGSU did not face the Broncos in her sophomore season.
• White has scored six goals over the last five matches.
• White's two-goal match was the second of her career, and her second in the last four contests. She also found the back of the net twice in BGSU's 3-0 win at Valparaiso two weeks ago (Sept. 11, 2022).
• Brynn Gardner had the assist on White's first goal on Sunday. For Gardner, it was her team-leading third assist of the season. She now has seven points to rank second on the team in scoring.
• Alaina Uncapher, like Brynn Gardner a freshman from Anthony Wayne H.S., made her first career start in Sunday's WMU match.
• A total of 15 different players now have started at least one match for the Falcons this season.
• One of those 15, Jasmijn Dijsselhof, returned to action after missing the last three matches due to injury. Dijsselhof played 85 of the 90 minutes on Sunday.
• A total of 20 Falcons saw action in Sunday's match, with 19 of those players seeing action in the first half.
• Uncapher picked up her second assist of the season, and her second in as many matches, with the helper on White's second goal Sunday. Uncapher had her first collegiate point on Thursday evening, with an assist on a Brynn Gardner goal.
• WMU's first goal on Sunday marked the first time since 2017 that the Falcons had allowed a goal against the Broncos. BGSU picked up shutouts vs. the Broncos in 2018 (2-0 at Cochrane Stadium), '19 (1-0 in Kalamazoo) and '21 (2-0 in Kalamazoo).
• BGSU now has an overall record of 60-29-14 since the start of the 2017 season. And, since the beginning of the 2018 campaign, the Falcons are now 47-22-13.
