Brett, Tate post double-doubles as BGSU tops KSU
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University women's basketball team remained perfect at the Stroh Center this season, posting a 66-57 win over Kent State University Saturday afternoon (Jan. 21).
Jocelyn Tate and Elissa Brett each recorded a double-double for the Falcons (16-2, 5-1 Mid-American Conference), who are now 8-0 at the Stroh in 2022-23. Tate had 14 points and 11 rebounds, while Brett had 11 points and a game-high 12 boards.
Lexi Fleming, who missed most of the first half due to injury, tied Tate for team scoring honors with 14 points. Fleming scored 11 of those points in the second half, and was a perfect 4-for-4 from the three-point line on the day.
Allison Day also hit double digits, scoring 13 points. Day had eight of those points in the fourth quarter, going 4-of-4 from the field in the final stanza.
Lindsey Thall had 15 points and Corynne Hauser 13 for the Golden Flashes (11-6, 3-3 MAC).
For the first time all season, BGSU had more turnovers than the opponent. The Falcons had 20 turnovers, while the Flashes had 19.
But, for the 18th time in as many games, BGSU had the advantage in points off turnovers. On Saturday, the Falcons had a 17-14 lead in that category.
BGSU had a 41-34 rebounding advantage in the win, and the Falcons held the visitors without a field goal in the game's first 6:22.
QUOTING COACH FRALICK
"I thought today was a great example of finding a way to win ugly. This (the last three games) was a gauntlet of a stretch. "At Akron, we had a furious comeback. Toledo was an emotional game. We've had a lot of challenges and adversity come upon us this week, and then grind out a win today. I thought our defense and our rebounding and our toughness really stood strong in a game that was kind of choppy. I thought we did some really good things in beating a good Kent State team."
FIRST QUARTER
• The Falcons got off to a relatively slow scoring start, but the BG defense allowed the Flashes to score just one point in the game's first six-plus minutes. Nyla Hampton opened the scoring with a layup just over two minutes into the contest, then found Lexi Fleming for a three-pointer and a 5-0 lead.
• Corynne Hauser split a pair of free throws with 6:57 left in the quarter, and moments later, Fleming left the game due to injury. She would miss the remainder of the first half.
• Sophie Dziekan hit a short-corner jumper, and Jocelyn Tate, who had assisted Dziekan on that bucket, knocked down a pair of free throws. When Elissa Brett hit two shots from the stripe, BGSU's lead was 11-1.
• After going 0-for-7 from the field with seven turnovers, KSU finally hit a field goal as Lindsey Thall made a layup with 3:38 left in the period. Tate answered with a driving layup, and after an Amy Velasco hoop, two more Tate charity tosses gave the Orange and Brown a 17-3 lead.
• The visitors ended the quarter by scoring seven points on the final three possessions, with a Casey Santoro layup, a Thall triple and a pair of Dionna Gray free throws. But, Tate answered the Santoro shot with a layup of her own, and Olivia Hill took a pass from Brett and made a layup in the final seconds of the period, giving BGSU a 21-10 lead.
SECOND QUARTER
• Allison Day's hook shot was BGSU's only field goal in the first four-plus minutes of the second period, but the Falcons allowed the Flashes to make only two shots during that stretch. When Velasco drained a corner three after an 'extra pass' from Brett, the Falcons had a 27-14 lead.
• But, BGSU then went scoreless for over four minutes. Again, though, the visitors were not able to cut into the Falcons' lead, as the visitors hit just two field goals in that time. Day made a pair of free throws at the 1:26 mark, and Brett's three-pointer gave the Falcons a 32-18 lead. Bridget Dunn answered with a triple of her own to cut the BG lead to 11 at the break.
THIRD QUARTER
• Fleming, who played just 3:19 in the opening half, opened the second-half scoring by taking a Hampton pass and hitting a three-pointer in transition. BG got a pair of stops, and Tate hit a pair of layups, leading to a KSU timeout with the Falcons leading by a 39-21 score.
• Clare Kelly ended BGSU's 7-0 run with five-straight points of her own, but Velasco's inbounds pass resulted in a deep three by Fleming, giving the Orange and Brown a 42-26 lead. Again, KSU rallied, scoring eight consecutive points. A nifty double-pump layup by Santoro was followed by Katie Shumate's layup, cutting the BGSU lead to 42-34.
• Brett converted a driving layup at the one-minute mark, the Hauser countered with a jumper that cut the Falcons' lead to 44-36 after three periods.
FOURTH QUARTER
• After a Santoro free throw opened the fourth-period scoring, BGSU reeled off the next eight points. Day scored six-straight points, with a pair of layups followed by a turnaround jumper from the foul-line extended. Brett's layup gave the hosts a 52-37 lead with 7:39 to go.
• Brett and Tate each hit a layup over the next few minutes as the teams traded points, and Tate fed Fleming for a three-pointer with the shot clock winding down. That triple gave BG a 59-44 lead with four minutes to go, but Kelly hit a three-point try on the next possession.
• KSU cut the lead to 10 points with a pair of Hauser free throws with 2:29 left, and after a BG turnover, Thall's shot off glass cut the Falcons' lead to 60-52 with 1:22 on the clock. But, that eight-point margin was as close as KSU would get in the game's final minutes.
• Hampton and Fleming each knocked down a pair of free throws, and after a Hauser three-pointer, BG broke the press and Fleming whipped a pass ahead to a wide-open Day for a layup. Thall hit a layup of her own in the final seconds to cap the scoring.
STATS, NOTES & NUMBERS
• BGSU shot 43.4 percent from the field, while holding KSU to a 35.6% rate. The Falcons went 6-of-18 and the Flashes 5-for-19 from the arc.
• BG was 14-of-18 at the free-throw line, including 5-of-6 in the fourth period. KSU went 10-of-18 from the stripe on the day.
• The Falcons had a 41-34 rebounding advantage, with Brett and Tate both posting double-doubles in the win.
• For the first time in 18 games this season, the Falcons had more turnovers than the opponent. BG committed a season-high 20 turnovers, to 19 by Kent State. The Falcons did have more points off of turnovers (17-14) than the Flashes.
• After going 19-42 overall and 5-31 in MAC play in head coach Robyn Fralick's first two seasons at the helm, the Falcons are 54-26 overall and 29-15 in the league over the last two-plus years.
