Day, Brett combine for 41 points as BGSU captures the conference home opener
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University women's basketball team had a red-hot start to each half on Saturday afternoon (Jan. 7), as the Falcons downed Eastern Michigan University, 79-63. The Mid-American Conference game was held at the Stroh Center.
Allison Day scored a season-high 21 points, while Elissa Brett had 20 for the Falcons (12-2, 1-1 MAC). Day was 10-of-12 from the field in the win.
Nyla Hampton scored 12 points and keyed a BGSU defense that forced the Eagles (9-4, 1-1 MAC) into 29 turnovers. The Falcons had 14 steals and enjoyed a 32-12 advantage in points off turnovers.
BGSU went on a 13-0 run to begin the game and a 15-2 surge to start the second half. After the Falcons' game-opening run, Eastern battled back to within four points in the second quarter.
The hosts extended the lead back out to nine points at the half, then scored 15 points in under three minutes to begin the third period. When Morgan Sharps hit a three-pointer to cap that stretch, the Falcons had a 56-34 lead.
BG led by as many as 28 points early in the fourth quarter. The Eagles used a game-ending 15-4 run to whittle the Falcons' lead down to the final 16-point margin.
Lachelle Austin had 21 points to lead the Eagles, with Olivia Smith adding 15 and ZaNiya Nelson 11.
NOTE OF THE DAY: HAVE A DAY
• Allison Day scored a season-high 21 points in the win over the Eagles, going 10-of-12 from the field. She also had three assists and blocked a shot.
• Day, who averaged 9.0 points per game during the 2022 portion of the Falcons' schedule, has averaged 19.5 ppg in BGSU's two 2023 games.
• Over the last four contests, Day has shot 72.2 percent from the field, going 26-for-36.
BONUS NOTE OF THE DAY: BRETT APPROACHING A MILESTONE
• Elissa Brett had 20 points on Saturday, giving her 976 points for her career. Brett has moved into 31st place on BGSU's career scoring list.
• Brett is 24 points away from becoming just the 30th player in school history to reach the 1,000-point mark.
QUOTING COACH FRALICK
"I'm proud of our team. Any win in the MAC feels like a really big win. Coming off of a road loss, I liked our focus, I liked our practices, and I thought we had some excellent stretches of basketball."
"Give Eastern Michigan credit – I felt like every time we made a run, they played tough. But, I thought our start to the third quarter really set the tone for the second half."
FIRST QUARTER
• While BGSU's third-quarter run was a fast-paced frenzy, the game-opening run saw the hosts surge ahead of the Eagles in clinical fashion. Allison Day hit a foul-line jumper on the game's opening possession, and Jocelyn Tate's driving layup on BG's next trip down the floor doubled the lead.
• A steal by Tate led to a right-side jumper by Day, and after Elissa Brett hit a pair of free throws, Lexi Fleming tied up Lachelle Austin to give the ball back to the Falcons. Nyla Hampton fed Brett for a floater, and when Amy Velasco stole the ball and found Fleming for a three-pointer, the Falcons had a 13-0 lead with 5:37 on the clock.
• Natalia Pineda hit a three-pointer (on a possession where BGSU deflected several EMU passes) to end the Eagles' game-opening scoreless streak at 4:40. The teams traded points over the remainder of the quarter, with the Falcons getting a driving layup from Hampton and a baby hook from Day. A Morgan Sharps steal gave the ball back to BG, and Tate spotted Day running the floor for an and-one layup with 57.5 seconds left in the period. An Austin layup cut the BG lead to 20-9 after 10 minutes.
SECOND QUARTER
• Buckets by Day and Tate gave the Falcons a 15-point lead, 24-9, with just over a minute gone. After a driving layup by Brett several minutes later, the Falcons had a 27-14 advantage, but the Eagles began to creep back into the game. Olivia Smith scored five-straight points, with a pair of free throws followed by a three-pointer.
• Tate hit two shots at the stripe, but Tayra Eke scored inside, then stole the ensuing inbounds pass and found ZaNiya Nelson for a quick layup. Another Nelson bucket cut the BG lead to just four points, 29-25.
• Fleming found Brett for a long-range shot, and after Hampton and Brett each hit two charity tosses, Hampton's steal and layup gave BG a 9-0 run and a 38-25 lead.
• Smith countered with a long-distance make, and Austin scored in transition, with Nelson's free throws giving the Eagles a 7-0 run. But, Velasco spotted Brett for another three-pointer and a 41-32 halftime lead.
THIRD QUARTER
• BG's explosive start to the second half began with another Brett triple on the opening possession of the period. Hampton stole a pass near midcourt and sailed in for a layup, and after a Ce'Nara Skanes triple, Sharps quickly answered with a trey, and Tate laid the ball off to Day for a hoop. BGSU had a 51-34 lead as the Eagles used a timeout just 1:42 into the second half.
• The timeout did nothing to slow the Falcons, however. A second-chance layup by Hampton and another Sharps three-pointer gave the Falcons a 56-34 advantage at the 7:08 mark. BGSU had scored 15 points in under three minutes.
• Hampton converted a layup, and Day sandwiched a pair of layups around a Smith three-pointer. The Falcons had a 62-39 lead at the media timeout, and Sophie Dziekan's bucket would give the hosts a 25-point advantage several minutes later. Another hoop by Day in the final minute of the quarter gave the Falcons a 68-42 lead.
FOURTH QUARTER
• Day was having her way in the paint, and hit another layup to give the Falcons a 70-42 lead in the opening minute of the quarter. Then, neither team scored for three minutes, but after an Austin three-pointer, Velasco answered with a quick layup.
• Velasco's long pass to Fleming resulted in a layup and a 75-48 lead midway through the period. The Eagles then went on a game-ending run to ultimately cut the deficit from 27 to 16 points.
