The game is expected to be a sellout. South Carolina finished first in the nation in the final 2022-23 Associated Press poll, and the Gamecocks are ranked fourth in the country in the 2023-24 USA Today Sports Preseason Top 25 poll, which was released last week.
BGSU head coach Fred Chmiel enters his first season to Northwest Ohio in April after spending the previous eight years on Dawn Staley's staff at South Carolina. During that time, the Gamecocks posted an overall record of 247-32 and a Southeastern Conference mark of 116-12.
The Gamecocks have advanced to the Final Four in each of the last three seasons, winning the national championship in the 2021-22 campaign. South Carolina posted a 35-2 overall record that season, and the Gamecocks went 36-1 and advanced to the Final Four in 2023.
South Carolina won two national titles while Chmiel was on Staley's staff, reaching at least the Sweet 16 in all seven seasons the NCAA Tournament was held during that time.
Chmiel and his BGSU staff have nine returning players from last year's team that went 31-7 overall and 14-4 in Mid-American Conference play. The Falcons won four games in the WNIT to advance to the semifinal round of that tournament for the first time in program history.
