The Battle Of I-75
Despite a slow start to the season, Toledo has kicked it into gear in the MAC. After starting the season with a win over Northeastern (3-2), the Rockets only tallied one other non-conference win, topping Memphis 3-1, and entered MAC play on a five-match losing streak. However, the Rockets swept Eastern Michigan to start the conference season before splitting with Central Michigan, putting them at 3-1 in the MAC and 5-10 on the season. Before facing BGSU on Friday (Oct. 6), Toledo will first take on Miami (OH) on Thursday (Oct. 5).
Defense has been the leading factor for the Rockets so far this season. Toledo leads the Mid-American Conference in digs per set, averaging 16.0. The backline success has spread to aces as well, being second in the conference for aces allowed per set with a mark of just 1.26. Toledo is also third in the MAC for blocks with 2.14 per set.
Friday will mark the 77th meeting between BGSU and UT. The Falcons lead the all-time series with a record of 59-17 over the Rockets, including a 29-4 record when playing at home. Bowling Green has also won eight of the last 10 meetings.
The Battle Of The Birds
Ball State has had a season of runs so far this year. They began 2-1 but proceeded to lose their next seven matches to drop their record to 2-8. The Cardinals were able to close their non-conference schedule with a 3-0 sweep over ETSU and haven't lost a set since with five straight sweeps. In addition to topping ETSU, Ball State took a pair of matches from both Central Michigan and Eastern Michigan. Like Toledo, Ball State will first take on Miami (OH) before facing the Falcons, playing against the RedHawks on Friday (Oct. 7).
Over the first two weekends of MAC play, Ball State has worked their way to the top of multiple stat categories during conference competition. The Cardinals lead the MAC in opponent hitting percentage (.136), assists per set (13.9), kills per set (14.9), blocks per set (2.83) and points per set (19.5).
Bowling Green and Ball State will meet for the 68th time in program history. The two teams have split the last six meetings with three wins each, but the all-time series leans to Ball State at 46-21.
One Away From 200
Head coach Danijela Tomic is closing in on a milestone win with the Falcons. Now in her 12th season with the Orange and Brown, Tomic enters the weekend with 199 wins at the helm of BGSU Volleyball, standing just one win away from 200.
