Donahue, Gerken, Moxey Officially Join Falcon Family
Bowling Green State University women's basketball coach Fred Chmiel has announced the signing of three student-athletes to National Letters of Intent. Johnea Donahue (Fort Wayne, Ind.), Lauren Gerken (Findlay, Ohio) and Kendal Moxey (Centreville, Md.) will join the Falcon family for the 2024-25 academic year.
Donahue and Gerken will be incoming freshmen in the fall of 2024, while Moxey will be a junior.
Donahue, a 5-8 guard, is a senior at Snider H.S. She averaged 12.2 points, 4.6 rebounds, 4.0 assists and 5.6 steals per game in 2022-23, helping to lead the Panthers to a 21-5 overall record along with sectional and regional titles. Donahue was named to the 2023 Girls All-Northeast Basketball First Team. She has played AAU ball for Always 100.
"Johnea is a fierce competitor who plays like she has something to prove every time she steps out on the floor," said Chmiel. "She has an incredible defensive presence, and will match our style of play perfectly. She plays at 110 percent for 40 minutes of a game, and is a ballhawk who will get a lot of steals and deflections to help jump-start our transition. 'Nae Nae is a passionate player who will be a great addition to our Falcon family."
Gerken, a 6-1 forward, is a senior at Liberty-Benton H.S. A two-time Blanchard Valley Conference Player of the Year to date, she averaged 19.8 points, 9.0 rebounds, 2.2 assists, 2.9 steals and 2.0 blocks for the Eagles last season, shooting 58.5 percent from the field. Also last season, she became the fastest player in school history to reach the 1,000-point mark for her career. Gerken also plays volleyball at Liberty-Benton, and recently earned All-Ohio honorable mention from the Ohio High School Volleyball Coaches Association. She has played AAU basketball for Always 100, where she was teammates with Johnea Donahue.
"Lauren is like a utility knife," said Chmiel. "She's a three-sport athlete, and is exceptional in all three sports, but we love her as a basketball player. Her versatility, her perimeter ability her size and her post presence all will make her a tremendous asset to our team. She will be able to play multiple positions for us, and we look forward to her arrival on campus."
Moxey, a 6-4 forward, is currently a sophomore at Daytona State College in Daytona Beach, Fla. A graduate of Queen Anne's County H.S., she averaged 25.6 points and 16.6 rebounds per game as a senior, and was named the Bayside Conference Player of the Year for a second-straight season. Moxey finished her high-school career with 40 consecutive double-doubles. Moxey spent the 2022-23 season at Chesapeake College in Wye Mills, Md., where she shot 49.5 percent from the floor and averaged 15 points and 11 boards per game. She was named to the All-Region Second Team as well as the All-MD JUCO Second Team for the Skipjacks. This season, she has 13.0 ppg and 10.5 rpg through two games for the Daytona State Falcons.
"Kendal is an imposing post player who will bring tremendous size and power to our post position," said Chmiel. "She has made big strides in just the last few months, and has become a great player on the junior-college level at Daytona. Her numbers speak for themselves, and we couldn't be more excited to have her join us here at Bowling Green."
The 2023-24 Falcons are 1-0 on the young season after an 89-86 win over Cleveland State on Tuesday night (Nov. 7) at the Stroh Center. BGSU is next in action on Saturday (Nov. 11), hitting the road to take on Texas State in the MAC/Sun Belt Challenge.
