December 22, 2023 | Women's Basketball
Nationally-Ranked Indiana tops BGSU, 84-35, Friday Night
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Sara Scalia hit eight three-point field goals en route to a game-high 32 points, as nationally-ranked Indiana University recorded an 84-35 win over the Bowling Green State University women's basketball team Friday evening (Dec. 22) at Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall.
The Hoosiers (10-1), ranked 16th in the Associated Press poll and 15th in the USA Today rankings, made 14 triples and shot 56 percent from the arc in the win. After both teams got off to a slow-shooting start, the hosts went on a 9-0 run to take a double-digit lead late in the opening quarter.
Mackenzie Holmes was the only other IU player in double digits in the scoring column, with 10 points. Amy Velasco led the Falcons with 14 points on the night.
The Hoosiers led by 20 points at the half. Then, leading by a 60-25 count after three quarters, the hosts made five three-pointers – including three by Scalia and one each by fellow starters Sydney Parrish and Chloe Moore-McNeil – within the first four minutes of the fourth quarter.
IU shot over 54 percent from the floor in the win, while holding BGSU to a 23.3 percent rate. The Hoosiers had a narrow 38-34 rebounding lead.
Fourteen of the Falcons' 34 boards came at the offensive end of the court, and BGSU had an 8-6 advantage in second-chance points.
NOTE OF THE NIGHT
• The Falcons went 0-for-11 from three-point range in the loss at IU, ending a prolific long-range streak. BGSU had made at least one three-pointer in 600 consecutive games, the seventh-longest streak in NCAA Division I women's basketball.
• Prior to Friday night, the last time the Falcons went an entire game without a made triple was on Feb. 12, 2005. On that date, BGSU picked up a 61-52 victory at Akron despite going 0-for-13 from the arc.
ALSO NOTEWORTHY
• Indiana's announced attendance on Friday night was 9.067. That is the fifth-largest crowd to watch a BGSU game in program history, and two of those five crowds have come in the last three weeks.
• BGSU played then #4/4 Iowa before a school-record crowd of 14,998 on Dec. 2.
• The average attendance at BG's four games in the month of December – a home contest vs. #1 South Carolina and road games against Iowa, Wright State and Indiana – was 8,958.5.
FIRST QUARTER
• Chloe Moore-McNeil opened the game's scoring, hitting a three-pointer on IU's second possession of the night. Lexi Fleming was injured and had to come out of the game just 1:10 into the contest, and when play resumed, Sara Scalia hit a jumper to give the hosts a 5-0 lead, before Amy Velasco responded with a nifty turnaround jumper that put the Falcons on the board.
• Then, however, neither team scored for several minutes, before Sydney Parrish converted a pair of free-throw tries nearly midway through the quarter.
• Those charity tosses began a 9-0 run for the Hoosiers, before Morgan Sharps hit a long two-point try to break BG's scoring drought.
• Velasco got to the line in the final minute of the quarter and knocked down both shots – she was a perfect 6-for-6 from the stripe in the game – but the hosts had a 20-6 lead after 10 minutes.
SECOND QUARTER
• Paige Kohler drove and scored on the first possession of the second quarter, and Erica Porter took a Velasco inbounds pass and hit a reverse layup. But, Scalia knocked down back-to-back three-pointers to give the Hoosiers a 29-10 lead.
• Sophie Dziekan put back a missed shot and Sharps scored inside midway through the period.
• After a Dziekan free throw, Keiryn McGuff had a monster block on a shot by Yarden Garzon, and moments later, Dziekan and Kohler teamed up for a steal, with Kohler scoring on a driving layup.
• Dziekan banked home a shot in the final minute of the half, and BGSU trailed by a 39-19 score at the intermission.
THIRD QUARTER
• IU scored the first six points of the half, before Velasco finished a drive through contact, banking a shot off glass and in. But, the hosts then scored nine-straight points, and a Scalia trey made it a 54-21 game.
• Velasco hit a turnaround one-hander, and the junior got to the line and made a pair of free throws moments later, but the Hoosiers had a 60-25 lead after 30 minutes.
FOURTH QUARTER
• IU knocked down five triples in the first four minutes of the final quarter. Porter took a Sharps pass and hit an and-one shot off glass, and Velasco converted another layup.
• Porter scored on a putback, Velasco made two more shots at the stripe and Sharps drilled a long two-point try to cap BGSU's scoring.
UP NEXT
• After a break for the holidays, BGSU begins the Mid-American Conference portion of the schedule at Central Michigan on Wednesday, Jan. 3. That game will begin at 7:00 p.m. at McGuirk Arena.
• Then, The Orange and Brown will open the home portion of the MAC slate three days later (Sat., Jan. 6) against Western Michigan. That game will begin at 2:00 p.m. at the Stroh Center.
