BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University women's basketball team used a strong second-half start to pull away from Western Michigan University en route to a 74-56 victory Wednesday evening (Feb. 1). The Mid-American Conference matchup took place inside the Stroh Center.
Elissa Brett and Jocelyn Tate each scored 16 points for the Falcons (19-2, 8-1 MAC), who are tied for first place in the MAC at the midway point of the conference schedule. BGSU has won eight consecutive games.
The Falcons and Broncos (9-11, 4-5 MAC) were tied, 32-all, at the half, before BGSU took the lead for good just six seconds into the third quarter. Brett took a Nyla Hampton pass and drained a three-point try to put BG on top.
The Falcons scored on three-straight possessions to begin the half, with Brett finding Hampton for a corner three and a 40-34 lead just over one minute into the third period.
Later in the quarter, an Amy Velasco three-pointer gave the Orange and Brown a double-digit lead, 55-44. The Falcons had eight assists on eight field goals in that third quarter, and after that Velasco triple, WMU never got closer than seven points the rest of the night.
BGSU had trailed by as many as 11 points in the first half, before battling back to tie the game at the intermission.
After allowing Western to score 25 points in the first quarter, the Falcons surrendered just 31 points over the game's final 30 minutes.
Velasco and Allison Day each had 11 points in the win. In addition to her 16-point total, Tate had a team-leading seven rebounds, two assists, three steals and a blocked shot.

NOTE OF THE NIGHT
• As mentioned, the Falcons fell behind by 11 points late in the first period, and trailed by a 25-14 score after 10 minutes. But, after allowing those 25 first-quarter points, BG gave up just 31 points the rest of the way.
• The Falcons had at least nine more points than WMU in each of the final three quarters, and outscored the Broncos, 60-31, over the last 30 minutes of the game.
QUOTING COACH FRALICK
"This was another tough conference game. Western game out and played really well. We were on our heels in that first quarter, but I thought we settled in, had a good second quarter, and really came out and played some good basketball in the second half."
"We did a good job defensively after the first quarter. We did a good job forcing turnovers, but we've got to do a better job of taking care of the ball."
Â
FIRST QUARTER
• Western Michigan got off to a sizzling start on Wednesday night. Taylor Williams scored on each of the visitors' first two possessions. Allison Day answered the first Williams bucket with a layup, but Abby Voss hit a corner three for a 7-2 Bronco lead.
• BG answered with three free throws over the next few minutes, but Hannah Spitzley hit a three-pointer from the top of the arc, then took a Williams pass and converted a reverse layup for a 12-5 WMU lead.
• Nyla Hampton dished the ball to Sophie Dziekan for a layup, but Maggie Stutelberg knocked down a shot from long distance, then fed Spitzley for a layup to make it a 17-7 game.
• Lexi Fleming and the Falcons looked to battle back. Elissa Brett grabbed a Bronco miss and found Fleming for a three-pointer, and a Fleming steal and layup cut the BG deficit to five. But, a Voss triple was followed by a Williams hoop, and after Jocelyn Tate answered with a floater, Voss hit another three in the waning seconds of the opening quarter, giving the Broncos an 11-point lead – WMU's largest of the game – at 25-14.
• WMU went 10-of-15 from the field, including 5-for-9 from the arc, in the first 10 minutes of Wednesday's game.
SECOND QUARTER
• Neither team scored for over two minutes to begin the period, before Tate dented the scoreboard with a driving layup, then a pair of free throws. Hampton found Amy Velasco at the top of the arc, and Velasco's triple prompted the Broncos to use a timeout.
• Out of that break, however, Brett took a charge to give the ball back to BG, and the senior knocked down a long-range attempt at the other end of the floor, cutting Western's lead to just a single point.
• Spitzley's three-pointer snapped the Broncos' scoring slump with 4:59 left in the period, and the teams traded hoops over the next minute. BGSU got a Hampton driving layup and a Dziekan bucket off of Brett's entry pass, while Maddie Watters hit a layup for the visitors.
• Day's hook shot after a Tate offensive board cut the Bronco lead to two points, and Tate hit a pair of free throws to tie the contest, 32-32, at the intermission.
THIRD QUARTER
• Brett took a Hampton pass and hit a three-point try just six seconds into the second half, and after a Watters layup, Fleming found Day for a hoop, and Brett's pass resulted in a corner three from Hampton. Just 1:04 into the quarter, BGSU's lead was 40-34 as the visitors used a timeout.
• The teams traded points over the next few minutes, with the Falcons getting a Hampton layup and a Tate free throw. A Hampton steal resulted in a Brett triple, and after Voss answered with a shot from the arc, Dziekan laid the ball off to a cutting Tate for a layup and a 48-41 lead.
• Brett hit a pair of free throws, then assisted Velasco on back-to-back buckets. Velasco converted a layup after Brett's steal, then knocked down a corner three to give the Falcons a 55-44 lead with 2:19 left in the quarter.
• Western cut that lead to seven, before the Falcons countered with a pair of free throws.
FOURTH QUARTER
• After Williams opened the fourth-quarter scoring with a pair of charity tosses, A Day putback was followed by two Brett shots from the stripe to restore BG's 11-point advantage. A Fleming lob resulted in a three-point play by Tate, giving BGSU a 64-51 lead with 7:12 to go.
• Brett's triple made it a 14-point game, and Dziekan ripped the ball away from Spitzley and fired a long pass ahead to a wide-open Fleming for a layup and a 69-53 lead midway through the period.
• A Hampton steal and layup made it a 71-54 game with three-and-a-half minutes remaining, and Velasco capped the BG scoring with her third triple of the game in the final minute of play.
