Hot-shooting Northern picks up a victory at the Stroh
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – Northern Illinois University came into the Stroh Center and came away with an 85-81 win over the Bowling Green State University women's basketball team Wednesday evening (Feb. 15).
The Huskies (13-11, 5-8 Mid-American Conference) shot nearly 54 percent from the field, and went 13-for-25 (52%) from three-point range in the win.
The Falcons (22-3, 11-2 MAC) saw a pair of 11-game winning streaks come to an end. BGSU had won 11 consecutive games since a loss in the MAC opener on Jan. 4, and the Orange and Brown had won 11-straight home games since a two-point loss to Akron nearly a year ago (Feb. 23, 2022).
Chelby Koker had 18 points for the Huskies, while Janae Poisson scored 17. A'Jah Davis had 16 points and a game-high 16 rebounds. For Davis, the double-double was her 17th of the season and her ninth in a row.Â
Five Falcons scored in double digits, including Nyla Hampton, who had a team-high 17 points. Hampton also had a career-high seven rebounds, three assists and a game-high five steals.
Allison Day and Lexi Fleming scored 15 points apiece, with Elissa Brett adding 11 and Amy Velasco 10. Brett had a BG-best eight rebounds.
NIU took a 24-14 lead after one quarter, and the Huskies had a 14-point lead, the largest of the night, after scoring the first four points of the second period. BGSU then went on a 17-4 run to get within a single point.
It was a one-point game on two more occasions before the half, but NIU took a four-point advantage into the intermission, then extended the lead to as much as 11 points late in the third period. BG got back within a bucket after 30 minutes, and it was a one-point game midway through the fourth quarter, but Northern was able to hang on.
Over the final three quarters, BGSU had the ball eight times in a one-possession game, but the Falcons never were able to tie the game or take the lead.
BGSU took 24 more shots than the Huskies, had nine fewer turnovers than Northern and scored 50 points in the paint in the narrow loss.
FIRST QUARTER
• The teams combined for three buckets in the game's first 45 seconds, then went scoreless for over three minutes. A'Jah Davis and Jayden Marable each hit shots for the Huskies, sandwiched around a Jocelyn Tate bucket for the Falcons.Â
• NIU held that 4-2 lead until Nyla Hampton found Elissa Brett for a transition three-pointer at the 6:12 mark. When Lexi Fleming took a Sophie Dziekan pass and knocked down a triple try, BGSU had an 8-4 lead midway through the quarter.
• But, the Huskies answered with an 8-0, getting treys from Janae Poisson and Grace Hunter. A Davis layup gave NIU a 12-8 lead, and the visitors never trailed again. Brett scored after the Falcons nearly turned the ball over, but Tara Stauffacher knocked down a shot from the arc, with a Marable trey giving the Huskies an 18-10 advantage.
• A Hampton steal led to an Allison Day layup, but another Stauffacher put Northern up by nine. A pair of Amy Velasco free throws were answered by Sidney McCrea's long-distance make, giving the Huskies a 24-14 lead after the opening period.
SECOND QUARTER
• NIU scored the first four points of the quarter, with two McCrea charity tosses giving the Huskies a 14-point advantage, the largest of the night, at 28-14. Hampton's driving layup was followed by a Day jumper to cut the margin to 10 points.
• Davis scored inside, but Brett's pull-up jumper began a 7-0 run for the hosts. Hampton's 'extra pass' resulted in a Velasco triple, and Velasco then spotted Dziekan for a layup.
• Chelby Koker's bucket stopped that run, but Hampton went coast-to-coast for a layup, and after an NIU turnover, Brett found Day for a layup. Then, Hampton blocked a shot by Hunter, grabbed the rebound, headed downcourt, was fouled by Hunter and hit both charity tosses. With 3:53 left in the half, BGSU was within a single point after a 17-4 run.
• Koker, however, was fouled on a three-point attempt and knocked down all three free throws. Brett hit a pair of shots at the stripe, and moments later, Dziekan put back a teammate's missed shot while being fouled, completing the three-point play to make it a 37-36 game.
• Stauffacher scored, but Fleming drove and hit a reverse layup. Poisson, however, hit a three-pointer with nine seconds left, giving the Huskies a 42-38 lead at the break.

• The lead was still 10 points when the Falcons scored after getting three offensive rebounds on the same possession. Dziekan's baby hook, however, was followed by a Poisson triple, making it a 58-47 game with 2:50 left in the quarter.
• Then, however, BGSU ended the period on an 11-2 run. Fleming hit a driving layup, and Hampton forced Koker into a turnover at midcourt. Hampton drove and scored while absorbing some contact, hitting the resulting free throw. Then, Hampton proceeded to steal an inbounds pass, saving the ball to Velasco. Velasco quickly flipped a pass to Fleming, who hit a short jumper to cut the Huskie lead to 58-54.

FOURTH QUARTER
• The fourth quarter saw the Falcons continually threaten to tie the game or take the lead, only to fall just short. BG began the quarter by missing a jump shot, then seeing a three-point try go halfway down before rattling out. McCrea's trey gave the visitors a seven-point lead.
• Velasco answered with a three-point play, but Koker responded with a triple. A Tate jumper was followed by a stop, but a potential game-tying three-point shot did not go down, and a Davis layup gave NIU a 68-63 lead.
• Day made a hook shot, then a layup to make it a one-point game yet again, but Koker's jump sot was followed by a Poisson three-point play, giving Northern a 73-67 lead with under four minutes to go.
• Hampton answered with a three-point play, but with the shot clock winding down, Marable's pass resulted in a corner three by Poisson. Koker had a chance to give her team a nine-point lead, but her three-point try rattled around and out. The teams then traded free throws before a Hampton jumper got BG within four points with 1:20 to go.
• Koker, however, hit a corner three with 50.6 seconds on the clock, giving her team a seven-point lead. Day answered with a three-point make, and it was an 80-76 game with 37.8 to go.
• Marable made two free throws, but Hampton was fouled and split a pair, and after an NIU timeout, Brett stole the ensuing inbounds pass, and Hampton found Fleming for a transition layup. With 11.6 seconds left, the Falcons were within three, at 82-79.
• The Huskies, however, were able to inbound the ball, and after a BG foul, Poisson hit two tosses with 6.9 seconds remaining, making it a two-possession game once again.
