UB shoots nearly 70% from the field at the Stroh
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – The University at Buffalo shot nearly 70 percent from the field on Saturday afternoon (Feb. 25), topping the Bowling Green State University women's basketball team, 84-66. The Mid-American Conference game was held at the Stroh Center.
On Senior Day, Allison Day was the lone Falcon in double digits in the scoring column, with 20 points. Day was 10-of-15 from the field.
Buffalo (10-15, 5-11 MAC) shot an eye-popping 30-for-43 from the floor (69.8%), obliterating the Stroh Center single-game record for field-goal percentage. And, the Bulls had a 37-21 rebounding advantage for the game.
BGSU (24-4, 13-3 MAC) forced the UB into 26 turnovers while committing just 12 themselves, but the Falcons shot just 39.4% from the field in the loss.
Re'Shawna Stone had 23 points to pace four double-figure scorers for the Bulls.
With one week remaining in the regular season, the Falcons are tied for second in the MAC standings. BGSU and Ball State are one game behind Toledo, and the Falcons end the regular season with contests against the Cardinals and Rockets.
FIRST QUARTER
• The Bulls never trailed on Saturday. UB scored the first eight points of the game, with Re'Shawna Stone scoring six of those points. Her third bucket of the game, a putback, gave the visitors an 8-0 lead with less than two minutes gone, and the Falcons used a timeout.
• Allison Day scored a pair of hoops for the Falcons over the next minute-plus, with Elissa Brett scoring after a steal by Kadie Hempfling, but a Zakiyah Winfield layup began a 7-0 UB run, with Hattie Ogden's three-pointer giving the visitors a 20-6 lead.
• BG responded with a driving layup by Amy Velasco and a hook shot from Day, but Stone knocked down a triple try in the final minute of the period to give Buffalo a 23-10 advantage. Stone had 11 first-quarter points.
SECOND QUARTER
• Emerita Mashaire's corner three opened the second-period scoring and gave the Bulls a 26-10 lead. Day found Olivia Hill for a layup, and after Velasco drove and scored, a Nyla Hampton steal led to a Day jumper that cut the Falcons' deficit to 10 points.
• UB scored to stop that 6-0 run, but BG forced a shot-clock violation on the Bulls, and Velasco drove the baseline and hit a nifty shot off glass. When Lexi Fleming found Hempfling at the top of the arc for a three-pointer, BG was within nine points, at 30-21.
• But, the Bulls responded with a 7-0 run, taking a 37-21 lead on a pair of Jazmine Young free throws.
• Jasmine Fearne knocked down a three-point try, and Hill hit a free throw. Fleming took a Brett pass and hit a long three in the final minute, but Buffalo hit three free throws in the last 33 seconds, and the visitors took a 44-29 lead into the half.
THIRD QUARTER
• BG scored the first three points of the second half, on a Sophie Dziekan free throw and a Day layup. But, Young and Ogden hit three-pointers on back-to-back possessions, and another Ogden triple gave the Bulls a 53-32 lead.
• After a timeout, a Young three-pointer made it a 24-point game. Hampton responded with a left-side triple, but Stone hit a fast-break layup, Young made a shot in close, and two Winfield tosses gave the Bulls a 62-35 lead.
• The lead grew as high as 28 points on two third-quarter occasions, before Hampton and Day hit buckets to make it a 65-41 game after 30 minutes.
FOURTH QUARTER
• After a Brett steal, Hempfling found Fleming for a transition layup to open the scoring in the final period, but UB scored the next five points to go ahead by 27. Brett responded with a three-point play, as Young fouled out with 7:11 to go, and after Winfield scored, a Hampton triple and a Brett free throw cut the UB lead to 72-50.
• But, with 4:44 to go, Stone knocked down a three to give the visitors a 25-point lead. Mashaire scored inside, and after Day answered with a hook shot, a Mashaire triple gave UB an 80-52 lead with 3:48 on the clock.
• BGSU got a Fearne floater and a pair of Day buckets, but could not get any closer than the final 18-point margin.
UP NEXT
• The Falcons, as mentioned, are tied with Ball State for second place in the MAC, a game behind Toledo. BGSU ends the regular season by facing those two teams.
• BGSU will begin the month of March by hosting Ball State on Wednesday (March 1). That game will begin at 5:00 p.m. at the Stroh, and will be televised nationally on ESPNU.
• Then, the Orange and Brown will end the regular season by making the short trip north to face Toledo next Saturday (March 4) in the Glass City. That contest will begin at 2:00 p.m. at Savage Arena.
• BGSU then will prepare for the MAC Tournament, which begins on Wednesday, March 8, in Cleveland. The Falcons' quarterfinal-round opponent and tipoff time are TBA.
