Dolejs, Hutter homer as BGSU collects 11 hits
EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The Bowling Green State University softball team lost a heartbreaker on Sunday (Feb. 26), as the University of Evansville scored four times in the seventh inning for a 10-9, walk-off win.
The game, the final contest in the Aces Home Tournament #2, took place at Tri-State Orthopaedics Field at James & Dorothy Cooper Stadium.
Peyton Dolejs and Katie Hutter each homered, and the duo combined to drive in seven of the nine runs for the Falcons (now 5-9 on the year). Dolejs hit a three-run homer in the second inning, with Hutter hitting a two-run shot – the first of her young career – in the sixth.
Hutter was 2-for-2 with a walk and four RBI, while Dolejs went 2-for-5 with two runs scored and three RBI.
Maycee Godbolt and Delaney Davis each were 2-for-4. Godbolt also drew a walk, scored a run and drove in a run, while Davis crossed the plate twice.
Taylor Howe had three hits, drove in four runs and scored three times for the Purple Aces (13-1). Howe had a three-run double to tie the game in the seventh, then scored the winning run on a single by Marah Wood.
The teams combined for 19 runs, along with 20 runners left on base, in Sunday's game.
HOW IT HAPPENED
• BGSU jumped on UE starter Mikayla Jolly with two runs in the top of the first. Delaney Davis and Peyton Dolejs had back-to-back singles to begin the contest. With runners at the corners, Dolejs stole second before Sophie Weber drew a four-pitch walk. Maycee Godbolt walked to force Davis home with the game's first run, and a Katie Hutter sacrifice fly enabled Dolejs to cross the plate.
• In the second inning, Wynnie Reid drew a walk, Davis followed with her second single in as many frames, and Dolejs crushed a ball to left-center. The three-run homer ended Jolly's day in the circle.
• The Purple Aces began to cut into the BG lead in the bottom of the second. Jenna Nink led off the inning with a single. She was retired on a grounder by Kaylee Lawson, but Lawson continued on to second on an error. Then, Jess WIllsey tripled to score Lawson. Scarlet Anderson struck out the next hitter, but Taylor Howe and Zoe Frossard followed with singles, and a walk to Marah Wood loaded the bases.
• Alexa Davis drew a walk as well, forcing home the Aces' third run of the inning, before BG reliever Hannah Davies got an inning-ending fly ball to center.
• The Falcons loaded the bases in the third, with a Hutter walk, an Ally Bezjak single and a Hannah Hunt free pass. But, a ground ball led to a force at the plate, and another grounder ended the inning.
• BG added a run in the fourth. Weber reached on an error, and Hutter came through with a two-out RBI single through the right side of the infield, giving the Falcons a 6-3 lead.
• Davies allowed a leadoff walk in the third, then retired the next six hitters she faced. But, the hosts scored twice in the fifth, on a two-run double by Nink. Davies bounced back by striking out the next two hitters to end the inning.
• In the sixth, Godbolt led off with a double, and one out later, Hutter deposited a pitch over the wall in center, giving the Orange and Brown an 8-5 lead.
• UE scored on a Howe double and a Frossard single in the bottom of the sixth, but BG got that runback in the seventh. Reid reached on an error, and took second on a sac bunt by Davis. Weber came through with a two-out, run-scoring single.
• But, the Aces rallied for four runs in the bottom of the inning. Nink and Sydney Kalonieha walked to begin the frame, and a Willsey single loaded the bases with no outs.
• Madi Young entered the game, and got the first out on a popup to short. But, Howe followed with a three-run double that tied the contest. A foul pop to Weber at third produced the second out of the inning, but Wood singled up the middle to enable Howe to score the winning run.
UP NEXT
• The Falcons head to Auburn, Ala., next weekend, for five games in the Jane B. Moore Memorial (March 3-5). BGSU is slated to play two games against nationally-ranked Auburn, as well as two against Tennessee Tech and one vs. South Alabama.
