BGSU opens MAC play this weekend vs. Toledo
ANN ARBOR, Mich. – The University of Michigan scored six times in the third inning to break the game open, as the host Wolverines downed the Bowling Green State University softball team, 9-0, on Wednesday (March 15) at Alumni Field.
The Wolverines (12-10) got a run in the first inning and added two unearned tallies in the second, before sending 10 batters to the plate in the third.
Michigan had an 11-2 advantage in hits on the day.
Sophie Weber and Maycee Godbolt each singled for the Falcons (7-13). In the circle, Ellie Price worked an inning and a third of scoreless relief, allowing just one hit.
BGSU v MICHIGAN – HOW IT HAPPENED
• Michigan broke on top in the first inning. Ellie Mataya led off with a walk against BGSU starter Scarlet Anderson, and stole second with one out. Anderson got Keke Tholl to ground out, but Maddie Erickson's two-out single up the middle enabled Mataya to come around and score.
• In the second, Anderson retired the first two batters, but back-to-back singles and an infield error loaded the bases, and the Wolverines took advantage, as Lexie Blair singled to plate a pair of teammates.
• The third inning saw Melina Livingston double with one out, and Ellie Sieler followed with a triple down the right-field line. Janelle Ilacqua singled to score a teammate, and Mataya and Tholl each had RBI base hits in the inning as well.
• Ellie Price came on with two outs and got the final out of the inning, then pitched a scoreless fifth frame.
• But, three U-M pitchers combined to allow just two hits and no walks. Sophie Weber singled off of Lauren Derkowski in the first inning, and Maycee Godbolt had a base hit against Jessica LeBeau in the fourth. But, both of those hits came with two outs, and in each case, the Wolverines were able to get an inning-ending grounder back to the circle.
