SETTING THE SCENE
• The Bowling Green State University softball team makes several short trips north this week, hitting the road for a total of four games in four days. Head coach Candace Fenton-Bockbrader and the Falcons will take on Michigan in a midweek matchup, before opening Mid-American Conference play against Toledo this weekend.
• The Falcons and Wolverines will meet on Wednesday (March 15), with first pitch scheduled for 4:30 p.m. at Alumni Field in Ann Arbor. The game is scheduled to be streamed via Big Ten Network+.
• Then, the Orange and Brown will head to the Glass City to open conference play vs. the arch-rival Rockets. BGSU and UT are scheduled to play a single game on Friday (March 17), beginning at 3:00 p.m., followed by a 1:00 p.m. Saturday (March 18) doubleheader. All three games will be played at Scott Park, and all three matchups are scheduled to be televised by BCSN as well as streamed by ESPN (Friday on ESPN+, Saturday on ESPN3).
THE SEASON SO FAR
• The Falcons are 7-12 on the young season. BGSU opened the 2023 schedule by going 2-3 at the DePaul Dome Tournament in Rosemont Ill. Among the wins was a 3-2 victory over Detroit Mercy in the season opener (Feb. 10), the first win of Fenton-Bockbrader's collegiate head-coaching career.
• Then, BGSU played four games at the T-Mobile Tournament, hosted by Florida. The Falcons posted a run-rule win over Delaware State, and gave third-ranked Florida a scare before falling, 10-7.
• The Orange and Brown then went 2-3 in back-to-back tournaments. At the Aces Home Tournament #2, hosted by Evansville. BGSU posted a pair of wins over St. Thomas, and hit .254 to the opponents' .235 on the weekend. Then, the Falcons participated in the Jane B. Moore Memorial, hosted by nationally-ranked Auburn. BG scored 15 runs in a win over Tennessee Tech at that tourney.
A FEW NOTES FROM BGSU'S LAST TOURNEY
• BGSU allowed only 10 hits – five in each game – in a pair of contests against nationally-ranked Auburn. In the first contest (March 3), the top of the BGSU order had seven hits, with both Makailah Dees and Sophie Weber going 3-for-3 at the plate.
• The next day, the Falcons exploded for a nine-run first inning, going on to a 15-10 win over Tennessee Tech. Nine different players had at least one hit, with Peyton Dolejs going 3-for-4 with three runs batted in.
• Delaney Davis, Mackenna Fry, Maycee Godbolt, Hannah Hunt and Reagan Williamson all had two-hit games against the Golden Eagles. Davis and Godbolt scored three runs apiece, while Dolejs and Hunt crossed the plate twice.
• Dolejs, as mentioned, drove in three teammates, while Hunt and Madison Lenig each had a pair of RBI against TTU.
• The Falcons sent 13 batters to the plate in that opening inning, getting five hits and drawing three walks. The half-inning also included a hit batter, a double steal and a wild pitch.
• On Sunday (March 5), Dees hit the first homer of her collegiate career, helping the Falcons to a 5-1 win over TTU. Godbolt drove in four of BGSU's five runs, while Scarlet Anderson picked up the complete-game win.
• Dees and Dolejs each were named to the All-Tournament Team at the Jane B. Moore Memorial. The Falcons hit .301 as a team in the five games in Auburn.
ABOUT THE FALCONS
• Head coach Candace Fenton-Bockbrader and assistant coaches Erinn Gankosky and Jacob Jeffries welcomed back 13 returning letterwinners from last year's club. The 2022 Falcons went 34-21 (.618) overall and 16-11 (.593) in Mid-American Conference play, good for fourth place in the 11-team league.
• BGSU's total of 34 victories was the program's highest in a decade, and the Falcons' overall and league-only winning percentages also were the best since 2012.
• The Falcons qualified for the 2022 MAC Tournament and advanced all the way to the championship game. Then, BG participated in national postseason play, heading to Fort Collins, Colo., and winning two games in the National Invitational Softball Championship. Those wins, over Stephen F. Austin and George Washington, were the first national postseason victories in BGSU softball history.
• In the classroom, a school-record 13 Falcons were named to the Academic All-MAC Team, while 15 team members were named Easton/NFCA All-America Scholar Athletes for the 2021-22 academic year.
A QUICK OVERVIEW
• The Falcons are 7-12 on the year. BGSU picked up wins over Detroit Mercy and Valparaiso at the DePaul Dome Tournament, and posted a run-rule win over Delaware State at the T-Mobile Tournament in Gainesville, Fla.
• At the latter tournament, the Falcons gave then number-three Florida everything the Gators wanted and more (Feb. 18). The Falcons twice rallied from multiple-run deficits, and BGSU took the lead in the fifth inning, but the hosts ultimately came away with a 10-7 win.
• The Falcons pounded out 12 hits against three Florida pitchers in the contest, rallying from an early deficit with a four-run third inning that briefly tied the score.
• The Gators retook the lead, but BGSU pushed three runs across the board in the fifth to go ahead by a 7-6 score. It marked the first time Florida had trailed this season. But, the nationally-ranked hosts countered with three runs in the bottom of the fifth, then added a run in the sixth for the final margin.
• On the year, BGSU has scored 78 runs and allowed 103. Six pitchers have seen action, with five of them allowing opponents to hit between .225 and .296 on the season.
• Hannah Davies has thrown a team-high 40 2/3 innings this year, and also leads BG pitchers in appearances (10), complete games (two - tied for team lead) and strikeouts (31). She has a 4.82 ERA this season to date.
• Scarlet Anderson has a 5-1 record and a 2.62 ERA in 34 2/3 innings of work. She has started a team-leading six games and has allowed opponents to hit just .225 against her.
• At the plate, Sophie Weber is hitting .382, while Katie Hutter and Makailah Dees are batting .320 and .310, respectively. Weber has started 18 of BGSU's 19 games and leads the Falcons in hits (21), doubles (six), on-base pct. (.433) and slugging pct. (.545).
• Peyton Dolejs is batting .293, while Hannah Hunt and Reagan Williamson are hitting .281 and .277, respectively. Dolejs has a team-high 10 RBI and is tied for the BG lead with 12 runs scored.
THE OPPONENTS / THE SERIES
• Michigan is 11-10 on the season after a 4-0 win over Kent State in Thursday's (March 9) home opener. Lexie Blair and Maddie Erickson are hitting .322 and .321, respectively, for the Wolverines. In the circle, Lauren Derkowski has an ERA of just 1.92 in 65-plus innings, while Jessica LeBeau has a 2.92 ERA in 62 1/3 innings of work. Last season, the Wolverines went 38-18 overall and 14-8 in Big Ten Conference play, advancing to an NCAA regional.
• Toledo enters the weekend series vs. BGSU with a 7-11 record this season. Riley Mohr and Jenna Kroll are batting .346 and .340, respectively, and Kroll has a team-leading 11 RBI. In the circle, Erin Hunt has made 11 starts and has a 2.60 ERA and 63 strikeouts in 64 innings. Last season, the Rockets went 12-37 overall and 5-21 in the MAC.
• BGSU trails Michigan, 32-4, in the all-time series, and the Wolverines captured a narrow 3-0 decision in Ann Arbor last season (March 29, 2022).
• The Falcons lead Toledo, 72-44, in that series, and BGSU swept a three-game series at Meserve Field last season, with a 7-1 win on April Fool's Day and 6-0 and 5-3 victories the following day. BG's last trip to Toledo saw the Falcons capture a 5-3, nine-inning victory two years ago (April 20, 2021).
