March 23, 2023 | Women's Basketball
Falcons face Florida Monday at the Stroh
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University women's basketball team used a huge third quarter to seize control on Thursday night (March 23), and the Falcons went on to a 73-60 win over the University of Memphis. The game, a WNIT third-round (Super 16) contest, took place at the Stroh Center.
With the win, the Falcons (30-6) advance to the WNIT's Great 8. BGSU will host Florida on Monday evening (March 27).Â
Allison Day had 18 points to pace four double-digit scorers for the Falcons, and added seven rebounds and five assists. Elissa Brett added 15 points, while Jocelyn Tate scored 14 and Lexi Fleming 10. Brett, Fleming and Tate each had six boards in the win.
Fleming paced the Falcons with three steals and led all players with a plus/minus rating of +21 in the win.
Amy Velasco, after dishing out a career-high 11 assists in BGSU's second-round win at Green Bay, led all players with six assists on Thursday night.
Jamirah Shutes scored 13 points to pace three double-figure scorers for the Tigers (22-11). Hannah Riddick and Madison Griggs each had 12 points.
The Falcons, leading by one point after one quarter, began the second period on an 8-0 run and led by seven points at the half. Then, BGSU exploded in the third quarter, outscoring the Tigers by a 28-8 count.
Velasco's three-pointer on the first possession of the fourth period gave the Orange and Brown a 30-point lead, the largest of the game, and BG still led by 26 points midway through that fourth quarter, before the Tigers went on a late-game run to make the final score slightly more respectable.
Â
NOTE(S) OF THE NIGHT
• The Falcons have advanced to the fourth round of the WNIT for the second time in school history. BGSU also won three WNIT games in 2014, topping High Point, St. Bonaventure and Michigan before losing to Rutgers in the round of 8.
• BGSU has won 30 games in a season for the first time since that 2013-14 club went 30-5. The school record for wins is 31, set by the '06-07 team that advanced to the Sweet Sixteen of the NCAA Championships and finished 31-4.
• Five teams have won 30 or more games in MAC women's basketball history. Bowling Green has done so on three occasions, while the other 11 MAC schools have combined for two.
QUOTING COACH ROBYN FRALICK
"What a cool night. It was a great night for the Falcons, our fans, our community and our student section. I thought we played some really good basketball to beat a very good Memphis team. Our defensive effort was outstanding. With Nyla (Hampton) not playing tonight, we had so many different kids step up, and it was a great team win."
(On the third quarter)
"It was magical. We did a good job of getting stops, and of connecting stops with scores. I remember Elissa (Brett) hit a few in a row, and Allison (Day) really got us going strong by setting a tone inside. It was fun. Our team is fun. They play hard, they play together, and they do what it takes for each other. I thought that third quarter illustrated our team's joy, energy, enthusiasm and togetherness."
FIRST QUARTER
• The Falcons got out to a quick 4-0 lead, as Jocelyn Tate found Allison Day for a jumper just 10 seconds into the game. Then, Tate stole the ball right back, took a pass from Amy Velasco and converted a layup. Another Tate layup gave the hosts a 6-2 lead, before the Tigers scored the next five points to forge ahead.
• Sophie Dziekan split a pair of free throws, breaking a three-minute scoring drought for the Falcons, but Destyne Jackson made a pair of shots at the stripe. Day put back her own miss for the Falcons' first field goal in nearly five minutes, but Shelbee Brown saw her prayer answered, throwing up a three-point try when she thought the shot clock was about to expire and hitting nothing but net.
• Lexi Fleming was fouled while grabbing a rebound and knocked down two shots from the stripe, and after a Memphis turnover on the ensuing inbounds pass, Velasco spotted Elissa Brett for a layup and a 13-12 lead. The Tigers sandwiched a pair of charity tosses around a Day bucket, and BG led, 15-14, after 10 minutes.
SECOND QUARTER
• The Tigers trailed by a single point despite going just 2-for-13 (15.4%) from the field in the opening 10 minutes. But, that deficit soon became nine points as the Falcons began the second quarter on an 8-0 run.
• Neither team scored for nearly two and a half minutes to begin the period, but Fleming then took an Olivia Hill pass and knocked down a three-point try from the right wing. Just over a minute later, Velasco's pass resulted in another Fleming triple, this time from the left wing. Then, the Tigers immediately threw the ball away before using a timeout. Out of that break, however, some nifty passing resulted in Dziekan being fouled under the hoop, and her two tosses gave the home side a 23-14 lead.
• Memphis final scored with over five minutes gone in the period, and Hannah Riddick made it two-straight hoops with a jumper just under a minute later. But, Kadie Hempfling immediately responded with a three-pointer, then stole the ball to lead to a driving layup by Day and a 10-point lead.
• Day would score again before the half came to a close, but a corner three from Riddick in the final seconds of the period narrowed the Memphis deficit to seven, 30-23, at the intermission.
THIRD QUARTER
• After outscoring Memphis, 15-9, in the second quarter, the Falcons owned the third period, with 28 points to just eight for the Tigers.
• A Day pass resulted in Tate's reverse layup on the opening possession of the period, and Velasco found Brett at the top of the arc for a triple and a 35-23 lead.
• Madison Griggs and Jamirah Shutes made back-to-back buckets for the visitors, but Day lobbed the ball inside to Tate for a layup and a three-point play.
• A Destiny Thomas free throw was the only scoring in the next two-plus minutes, but then (but then...) a pair of Brett free throws began a 12-0 run for the home team. Those free throws came after a technical foul on Shutes, and that possession saw BG score four points as Day scored on a baby hook.
• Then, Day's cross-court pass resulted in a Brett triple. Day grabbed a Memphis miss, was fouled on the play and converted two shots at the stripe. And, when Velasco's pass resulted in another Brett trey, the Falcons had a 50-28 lead.
• Emani Jefferson ended her team's scoring slump with a driving layup, but Tate made three free throws before drawing an offensive foul on Jefferson, and Dziekan found Brett cutting down the lane. Brett's floater made it a 25-point game, and free throws from Velasco (two) and Fleming (one) ended the quarter.
• A Memphis free throw snapped BG's 8-0 run, but the Falcons outscored the Tigers, 23-4, over the final seven-plus minutes of the period.
• Brett scored 13 points in the third quarter alone, going 3-for-4 from the arc during that period. Tate had eight third-period points to match the output of the entire Memphis team.
FOURTH QUARTER
• When Day's fifth assist of the game led to a Velasco triple on the opening possession of the final quarter, the Falcons had a 30-point lead. Memphis slowly chipped away at that mountainous deficit, but the game was decided.
• The Tigers scored six-straight points, but Day hit a baby hook despite being double-teamed, and after Velasco blocked a Memphis three-point try, Tate scored in traffic.
• Moments later, Shutes answered Velasco's runner with back-to-back three-pointers, and BG's lead was 20 points with 3:37 to go. The Tigers had some success forcing Falcon turnovers in the final three minutes, but Velasco hit a pair of free throws, Day hit a right-side jumper and Fleming's shot from the stripe gave the hosts a 16-point lead before a late Shutes triple provided the final margin.
Â
STATS, NOTES & NUMBERS
• BGSU shot 41.8 percent from the floor, while holding Memphis to a 29.2% success rate. Memphis shot an anemic 20% – 9-of-45 – over the first three quarters before going 10-of-20 in the fourth. But, that 50% fourth period came after the Falcons already owned a 30-point lead.
• Both teams made seven three-pointers, with BG doing so in 21 attempts and Memphis in 26. The Falcons also had a better free-throw rate, shooting 76.9% (20-of-26) from the stripe to the Tigers' 60% (15-of-25).
• Memphis had a 46-41 rebounding advantage. BGSU committed 17 turnovers, but forced the Tigers into 18.
