Weber homers, but Falcons fall in home opener
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – Ohio University pounded out 17 hits on Friday afternoon (March 24), as the Bobcats picked up an 8-1 win over the Bowling Green State University softball team. The Mid-American Conference game was held at Meserve Field.
Sophie Weber and Delaney Davis each had two hits for the Falcons (8-16, 1-3 MAC). One of Weber's hits was a solo homer, while Davis doubled and singled in the first home game of her collegiate career.
But, the Bobcats (11-14, 2-2 MAC) scored four times in both the second and fifth innings to back the four-hit pitching of Skipp Miller. Yasmine Logan and Tori O'Brien each had three hits for the visitors, with a total of nine Bobcats picking up at least one hit.

NOTE OF THE DAY
• A total of 12 players saw action for the Falcons, with exactly half of them making their respective Meserve Field debuts. Freshmen Delaney Davis, Marti Henkel, Hannah Hunt and Katie Hutter all were in the starting lineup, and were joined by Madison Lenig and Scarlet Anderson.
• Anderson is in her first season with the Falcons after transferring to BGSU from Rhode Island, while Lenig has now played in eight career games – all in 2023 – with her first seven appearances coming away from home.
BGSU v OHIO – HOW IT HAPPENED
• Ohio loaded the bases with one out against Scarlet Anderson in the top of the first, but the BG pitcher knocked down Emma Hoffner's liner back to the circle, firing the ball to catcher Madison Lenig for a force at the plate, then got Sydney Grein to hit a grounder to Sophie Weber, who stepped on the third-base bag to retire the side.
• But, the Bobcats would break through with four runs in the second inning. Ohio had six hits in that inning alone, including two-run singles by both Yasmine Logan and Alexis Dawe.
• The Falcons had just two baserunners through the first three innings, before Weber led off the BG fourth with a line-drive homer to left. But, Ohio starter Skipp Miller then retired the next seven batters she faced.
• And, the 'Cats responded in the fifth. After Reagan Farmer doubled and Hoffner walked, Grein hit a ball to the wall for a long single that scored Farmer. One out later, Cici Keidel homered to left to give Ohio a seven-run lead.
• BG put runners at the corners on singles by Delaney Davis and Weber with one out in the sixth, but a popup to the right side resulted in an inning-ending double play, and the Falcons went in order in the seventh.
