BG Bats Come Alive in Game Two, But Ball State Captures Saturday's DH
April 22, 2023 | Softball
Falcons pound out five extra-base hits, including three doubles, in the nightcap
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University softball team banged out five extra-base hits, including three triples, in Saturday's (April 22) second game, but Ball State University captured both games of the twinbill. The Cardinals picked up wins by scores of 8-0 and 8-4 at Meserve Field.
Wynnie Reid and Sophie Weber each had three hits for the Falcons (8-32, 1-19 Mid-American Conference) in the doubleheader. Reid was 2-for-2 with a triple two runs scored in the nightcap, while Weber had an RBI double and a run-scoring triple in game two.
Peyton Dolejs tripled and scored in game two, with Reagan Williamson scoring a run and Ashley Chevalier and Katie Hutter each driving in a run in the contest.
The Cardinals (23-21, 13-9 MAC) scored in each of the first three innings of game one, building a 6-0 lead in that time. The visitors added two more runs in the fifth to capture a run-rule victory. Four of BSU's eight runs in each game were unearned.
Game two saw the Orange and Brown jump on top with a two-run first inning. Weber tripled to score Reid, who had singled, before Weber came home on a Hutter double.
The Falcons got another run in the third, with a Reid triple followed by a Weber double on the very next pitch.
But, the Cards scored three times in the fourth and five more times in the fifth to take the lead. BG got a seventh-inning run when Dolejs scorched a ball down the right-field line for a triple, before scoring on Chevalier's squeeze-play bunt.
NOTE OF THE DAY: TRIPLE YOUR FUN
• The Falcons, as mentioned, had three triples in Saturday's second game, Peyton Dolejs, Wynnie Reid and Sophie Weber each picked up a three-base hit.
• It marked the first time in over 14 years that BGSU had three triples in a game. The last such instance came on April 4, 2009, against Northern Illinois.
• BGSU single-game records are incomplete, but the total of three triples is believed to tie a school record. Since the start of the 1997 season, BG has had three triples in a game on four occasions. In addition to 2009 vs. NIU and Saturday vs. BSU, the other two games came less than a month apart in 1998; on March 27 vs. Marshall and April 22 (exactly 25 years prior to Saturday) against Cleveland State.
BGSU-BSU GAME ONE – HOW IT HAPPENED
• The Cardinals put runs on the board in each of the first three innings to take a 6-0 lead. BSU took an early lead after Haley Wynn walked and Remington Ross singled to begin the game. With runners on second and third and one out, McKayla Timmons laid down a bunt that scored Wynn with the game's first run.
• BGSU also got a pair of first-inning baserunners via a hit and a walk. Wynnie Reid singled with one out, and Reagan Williamson drew a two-out, four-pitch base on balls, but BSU starter Angelina Russo got a popup to third that ended the inning.
• In the second inning, a one-out error gave the visitors a baserunner, and after a hit batter and a walk, Wynn singled to plate a run. Then, a two-out single by Jazmyne Armendariz scored two more teammates to give BSU a 4-0 lead.
• The third inning saw Kaitlyn Mathews lead off with a single through the right side. She would score on a bloop single off the bat of Samantha Jo Mata. Then, after a Kaitlyn Gibson single, Wynn picked up her third hit in as many at-bats, driving home another run.
• After allowing the two runners in the first, Russo retired seven batters in a row. But, Sophie Weber began the Falcon fourth with a hit, and Williamson drew her second walk of the game. Makailah Dees also walked to load the bases, but Russo escaped the jam. First, Hannah Hunt's line drive was caught in right field. Then, a hard one-hopper back to the circle resulted in a double play.
• BSU took an eight-run lead with two runs in the fifth, on a Ross groundout and a BG error. Peyton Dolejs drew a two-out walk in the bottom of the inning, but a strikeout ended the contest.
• BSU had 11 hits, led by a 3-for-3 performance from Wynn. She also walked, while scoring twice and driving in two runs.
• Russo went four and two-thirds innings, allowing just two hits while walking three batters and striking out two. Bridie Murphy came on to get the final out after issuing a walk.
• Hannah Davies pitched all five innings for the Falcons, allowing four earned runs and striking out three Cardinals.
BGSU-BSU GAME TWO – HOW IT HAPPENED
• The Falcons got on the scoreboard first in game two. Wynn continued her hot hitting for the visitors by leading off the contest with a base hit. But, Falcon starter Sydney Stepp got a fly ball to center and a fielder's-choice grounder before striking out Mathews.
• Then, in the bottom of the first, BGSU took the lead against BSU starter Francys King. Reid singled with one out, and Weber followed with a line-drive that was just out of reach of the retreating center fielder for a triple. Then, Williamson reached on a fielder's choice, and she came all the way around to score from first on a Katie Hutter double to left.
• Stepp worked around back-to-back singles in the second inning, and after King retired the Falcons in order in the bottom of the second, Stepp returned the favor with a 1-2-3 third inning.
• In the Falcon third, Reid tripled with one out, as her sinking liner got past the diving right fielder. Then, on the very next pitch, Weber smoked a ball to right-center to allow Reid to easily trot home.
• But, in the top of the fourth, Gibson singled before Emma Richards got a ball up in the jet stream. With a hard wind blowing from left to right, Richards' fly ball carried over the fence in right for a two-run homer. Then, after a two-out single by McKenna Mulholland, Ross reached on a throwing error, with Mulholland coming all the way around to score on the play.
• BG got runners to second and third in the next half-inning, as Hunt reached on an error before Madison Lenig smashed a single through the right side of the infield. The runners moved up on Ally Bezjak's sac bunt, but BSU hurler Emma Eubank got back-to-back fly balls to get out of the jam.
• Then, in the fifth, the Cards broke the game open. BSU scored five times, beginning with a check-swing, two-run single by Gibson. The ball landed on the right-field foul line just beyond first base and caromed into foul territory as runners scored from third and second, respectively.
• Then, Richards reached on a BG error, with a run scoring on the play, as the inning continued. Mullholland had a two-run double to give the Cards an 8-3 lead.
• Ashley Chevalier walked to begin the Falcon fifth, but was stranded at first. Bezjak beat out a two-out grounder to second for a base hit in the sixth, but another ground ball ended the inning.
• Dolejs led off the seventh with a triple – the Falcons' third of the game – and scored easily on a Chevalier squeeze play. But, Eubank locked down the win by getting back-to-back ground balls to the left side of the infield.
• Eubank picked up the win with four innings of one-run, three-hit relief. King, the BSU starter, allowed three runs and five hits in three innings of work.
• Stepp took the loss for the Cardinals, allowing four earned runs before leaving with two outs in the fifth.
• Mackenzie Krafcik pitched the final two and one-third innings, allowing just one hit. She retired seven of the eight batters she faced.
• At the plate, BGSU had eight hits, including five of the extra-base variety. Reid went 2-for-2 with a triple and two runs scored. Weber also had two hits – a double and a triple – and drove in a pair of teammates.
• Dolejs tripled and scored, while Hutter had an RBI double.
• Mulholland was 3-for-3 for the Cardinals, with Armendariz, Gibson and Katie Van Der Mark picking up two hits apiece.
