Flashes Stop Falcons in Final Home Game
April 30, 2023 | Softball
Williamson goes 2-for-3 to cap solid weekend at the plate
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – Kent State University took an early lead on Sunday afternoon (April 30), as the Golden Flashes went on to a 9-0 win over the Bowling Green State University softball team. The Mid-American Conference game, the Falcons' final home contest of the 2023 season, took place in all kinds of weather at Meserve Field.
The Golden Flashes (17-29, 12-12 MAC) got three runs, including an Emily Lippe homer, in the top of the first inning. KSU added single markers in the third and fifth frames before tacking on several more runs in the seventh.
Reagan Williamson continued her hot-hitting weekend at the plate for the Falcons (8-39, 1-26 MAC), going 2-for-3 with a double. In the final home game of her collegiate career, Ally Bezjak went 1-for-2 with a walk.
Williamson hit .600 in the three-game series, going 6-for-10 with a walk against Kent State pitching.
BGSU-KSU – HOW IT HAPPENED
• The Golden Flashes broke on top early. Alexandria Whitmore led off the game with a walk, and Delaney Robeson also drew a base on balls with one out. A double-steal attempt produced a run, and Emily Lippe followed with a homer to give the visitors a 3-0 lead.
• Later in that half inning, with a 2-0 count on Abbie Wilfing, the game was delayed due to weather. After a 29-minute delay, the game resumed, and Mackenzie Krafcik – who had thrown just two pitches in the contest prior to the delay – got Wilfing to pop up to Ally Bezjak at first base, then induced Julia Mazanec to hit a grounder to Bezjak that retired the side.
• KSU got a pair of infield hits in the second inning, and Bri Despines had a two-out hit to left, but Makailah Dees charged the ball, came up throwing and fired a strike to catcher Reagan Williamson in plenty of time to cut down Jade Ramer attempting to score.
• The visitors scored an unearned run in the third inning. Savannah Wing doubled with one out, and back-to-back errors enabled her to score several batters later.
• Krafcik retired the Flashes in order in both the fourth and sixth, but KSU picked up a fifth-inning run. Wing doubled for the second time, took third on a ground ball and scored on a Mazanec base hit.
• Then, KSU broke the game open in the seventh. A leadoff error began the inning, and after an infield single, a fielder's choice and a hit batter, Mazanec's bases-loaded triple to right-center scored three of her teammates. Mazanec would score on a Jada Crittendon ground ball.
• For the Falcons, Dolejs walked in the first inning and took second on a wild pitch. Dees drew a base on balls in the third, and Williamson doubled in the fourth. But, BG could not break through against KSU starter Macy Irelan. After the Williamson hit, Sophie Weber's line smash was caught just above the ground by shortstop Mazanec to end the inning.
• Ally Bezjak singled in the fifth, Williamson had a base hit in the sixth and Bezjak drew a walk in the seventh, but BG could not get on the scoreboard.
• Irelan threw four innings of one-hit ball for the visitors, while Anilese Kelly allowed two hits in the final three frames. Irelan walked two batters and Kelly one.
• For the Falcons, Krafcik pitched the game's final six and two-thirds innings.
• At the plate, Lippe, Wing and Mazanec each had two hits for the Flashes. Wing doubled twice and scored three runs, while Mazanec had four RBI.
• Williamson went 2-for-3 with a double for the Orange and Brown, with Bezjak picking up a single and a walk.
