BGSU to face three top-10 teams from a year ago
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – Bowling Green State University women's basketball coach Fred Chmiel has announced his team's schedule for the 2023-24 season. The Falcons' arduous slate includes 13 games inside the friendly confines of the Stroh Center, and tickets are on sale now.
Highlighting those 13 home contests is a game vs. perennial power South Carolina on Tuesday, Dec. 19, at the Stroh.
The Falcons' challenging schedule includes two games vs. 2023 Final Four teams, and three contests – all in the month of December – against teams that finished in the top 10 in the nation last season. In addition to hosting the Gamecocks, the Falcons will travel to face defending national runner-up Iowa and defending Big Ten Conference regular-season champion Indiana.
Those three teams finished first (South Carolina), second (Indiana) and third (Iowa) in the nation in the final Associated Press poll of the 2022-23 season, which was announced on March 13.

"We have put together a schedule that is very challenging and competitive in preparation for a tough conference schedule and, hopefully, postseason play as well," said head coach Fred Chmiel, who enters his first season at the BGSU helm. "We know we will be tested and pushed to our limits, and we are very excited about the challenges ahead."
Chmiel came to Northwest Ohio in April after spending the previous eight years on Dawn Staley's staff at South Carolina. During that time, the Gamecocks posted an overall record of 247-32 and a Southeastern Conference mark of 116-12.
The Gamecocks have advanced to the Final Four in each of the last three seasons, winning the national championship in the 2021-22 campaign. South Carolina posted a 35-2 overall record that season, and the Gamecocks went 36-1 and advanced to the Final Four in 2023.
South Carolina won two national titles while Chmiel was on Staley's staff, reaching at least the Sweet 16 in all seven seasons the NCAA Tournament was held during that time.
For the 2023-24 Falcons, the home portion of the non-conference schedule also includes games vs. Cleveland State (Nov. 7) and Duquesne (Nov. 27) during the month of November, as well as a February matchup with a team to be announced. The latter game is part of the MAC-Sun Belt Challenge, which also sees the Orange and Brown travel to Texas State on Nov. 11 to open the road portion of the schedule.
The non-league schedule will see the Falcons travel to face both the Big Ten Conference's 2023 regular-season and tournament champions. BGSU will open the December schedule by facing national runner-up Iowa (Dec. 2). The Hawkeyes, led by consensus national player of the year Caitlin Clark, finished second in the Big Ten before winning the league tournament and advancing all the way to the national championship game.
BGSU will also meet Indiana in the month of December (Dec. 22), heading to Bloomington for the second-straight season. The Hoosiers captured the Big Ten regular-season crown last year, going 28-4 on the season.
Indiana and Iowa were ranked No. 2 and No. 3, respectively, in the final Associated Press rankings of 2022-23. The Hawkeyes were ranked No. 2 and the Hoosiers No. 7 in the end-of-year USA Today Coaches poll, which was announced following the NCAA Tournament.
South Carolina was ranked No. 1 in the nation in both polls at the end of the regular season, and finished third in the country in the coaches poll.
BGSU's other non-league games include a pair of trips down I-75, to Xavier (Nov. 18) and Wright State (Dec. 12), as well as a Thanksgiving week tournament in Savannah, Ga., Â (Nov. 22-23), where the Falcons will meet a pair of teams to be determined.
The 18-game Mid-American Conference schedule will see the Orange and Brown play two games each vs. Akron, Buffalo, Eastern Michigan, Miami (Ohio), Northern Illinois, Toledo and Western Michigan. BG will meet Ball State, Central Michigan, Kent State and Ohio once each, hosting the Golden Flashes and Bobcats while hitting the road to meet the Cardinals and Chippewas.
The 2023-24 MAC schedule features four Saturday home games, including a Feb. 17 meeting with arch-rival UT inside the Stroh Center. That comes seven days after BGSU's home contest in the MAC-Sun Belt Challenge (Feb. 10).
BGSU will have five total home games in the month of January, four more in February and one in March.
The Falcons went 31-7 overall in the 2022-23 season, with the last four victories coming in the WNIT. BGSU advanced to the semifinals of that tourney for the first time in school history.
A total of nine letterwinners return from that '22-23 BGSU squad, which went 14-4 in MAC play. Chmiel and his staff also welcome five newcomers to the 2023-24 roster.
