August 24, 2023 | Women's Soccer
CINCINNATI, Ohio – The University of Cincinnati scored early, and the Bearcats made that goal hold up in a 1-0 win over the Bowling Green State University women's soccer team Thursday evening (Aug. 24). The non-conference match was held at Gettler Stadium.
Megan Smith scored the lone goal of the night, just 100 seconds into the match, for the Bearcats (1-2-0).
Lili Berg and Madison Vukas each played 45 minutes in goal for the Falcons (0-2-0), with each 'keeper making one save. The Falcons held advantages of 13-7 in total shot attempts, 7-3 in shots on goal and 4-3 in corner kicks on the night.
Anna Rexford made seven saves in net to earn the shutout for the 'Cats.
The Falcons had several close calls in the first half, including a hard shot by Maya Dean and a long run into the box by Lacee Bethea, with the ball being poked away at the last second on the latter play.
In the second half, Brynn Gardner hit the crossbar with a curving shot, and Emma Stransky put a ball on frame from the left side, that Rexford was able to tip wide of the far post.
In the 70th minute, Lizzie Bultnyck forced a Bearcat turnover, and Ellie Pool slid a pass to Emme Butera. Butera took a touch and blasted a shot from distance that forced Rexford into a diving save.
And, with just over three minutes to go, Dean fired a hard, dipping shot from distance, but the ball went just over the crossbar.
