Pool Notches Winner as Falcons Top Titans, 2-1
August 31, 2023 | Women's Soccer
Bethea also scores in road win in the Motor City
DETROIT, Mich. – Ellie Pool scored early in the second half, lifting the Bowling Green State University women's soccer team to a 2-1 victory over the University of Detroit Mercy on Thursday night (Aug. 31). The non-conference match was held at Titan Field.
Lacee Bethea also found the back of the net for the Falcons (2-2-0), who have won two-straight matches. Karsen Murray scored for the Titans (0-2-3)
Lili Berg and Madison Vukas split time in goal, with each 'keeper playing 45 minutes. Berg was credited with three saves in the first half, while Vukas made one second-half save and got the win.
The Falcons had a 15-9 advantage in shots, doubling up on the Titans (8-4) in that category after halftime.
HOW IT HAPPENED – GOALS, HIGHLIGHTS, ETC.
• The Falcons got on the board with just under 11 minutes gone. The onrushing Maya Dean received a pass on the right side of the field, took a touch as she headed toward the center and fired a shot. The ball was blocked by a defender, but caromed toward Lacee Bethea, who chipped a shot from 20 yards out. The perfectly-placed ball found the upper left corner of the net, eluding the leaping effort of Titan goalkeeper Jazmine Scott and glancing off the bottom of the crossbar and in.
• Two minutes later, Katie Cox was fouled and Isabelle Gilmore took the ensuing free kick. Gilmore fired a shot from distance, with the ball going just inches over the bar.
• But, with just over 16 minutes elapsed, the Titans netted the equalizer. After a BG clearing attempt reached midfield, the ball was knocked back toward the Falcons' defensive end of the pitch. Karsen Murray ran onto the ball, took a few touches and hit a long shot. The arcing shot found the top of the net from approximately 35 yards out.
• Early in the second half, Emma Stransky received a pass near midfield. She quickly eluded a defender and made a long run toward the UDM goal. Stransky, angling toward the middle of the field, slid a nifty through ball to Ellie Pool, who raced past the last line of defense and slotted her one-time effort past Scott and into the net.
• In the 66th minute, Dean played Stransky into the box. Stransky hit a hard shot across her body as she moved toward the right side of the penalty area, but Scott was able to parry the shot. Then, less than a minute later, Lexi Czerwien's right-side cross found the penalty area. Scott came off her line to try for the ball, but Pool knocked it away, playing it back to Dean. Dean hit a quick, hard shot that just sailed over the crossbar.
• Bethea made a bid for a second goal on the night, and Sammie King put a hard shot on frame several minutes later, but Scott was able to keep it a one-goal game.
