Falcons Return Home for Mel Brodt Open on Friday

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University men's and women's cross country teams return home to host the Mel Brodt Collegiate Open this Friday (9/15).
35th Annual Mel Brodt Collegiate Open
The 2023 Mel Brodt Collegiate Open will be held at the Bowling Green Cross Country Course. The men's 8,000m race will open the meet at 5:30 p.m., and the women's 6,000m race will follow at 6:05 p.m. An awards presentation will take place following both races which will feature the top 15 finishers in each gender. The newly redesigned course features spectator friendly loops that lead into a permanent finish line. Course maps are available below.

Men Look to Bounce Back at Home
The mens' squad looks to land higher in the results after placing 11th at the Tommy Evans Invitational hosted by Akron two weeks prior. Heriberto Alvarez was the first falcon to cross the finish line with a time of 19:20.74 which claimed 34th in the field. The senior was followed by Micah Bentley (57th), Hunter Sidle (58th), and Michael Nowinski (60th) in the initial meet of the season.
Perry, Cubbison Lead Women into MACtion
Kailee Perry and Kylee Cubbison come off excellent performances in Akron with Perry winning the race outright and Cubbison coming in second. The two posted times of 17:50.34 and 18:04.78 respectively.
Perry and Cubbison were just a part of the Falcons victory in Akron with Regina Rose (10th), Katerina Shuble (17th), Elise Johnson (18th), and Emma Hellwege (19th) finishing in competitive spots. The Womens' squad would ultimately take the meet in comfortable fashion, topping second place Ohio University, followed by the remaining 13 teams, by 19 points.
A Look at the Competition
The Falcons will be facing a field that will be extremely competitive with the presence of an array of elite MAC institutions in the mix. The field will consist of 8 MAC schools in Western Michigan, Central Michigan, Eastern Michigan, Toledo, Northern Illinois, Akron, Ohio, and Ball State. The Falcons will see one out of conference team in Saginaw Valley with the Bowling Green Club XC team also partaking in the Open.
