BGSU Battles Broncos to Scoreless Draw Sunday

Falcons keep second-straight clean sheet to begin MAC play
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University women's soccer team kept a clean sheet for the second-straight match, battling Western Michigan University to a scoreless draw on Sunday afternoon (Sept. 24). The Mid-American Conference match was held at a windy Cochrane Stadium.
The Broncos (5-3-1, 1-0-1 MAC) entered the game at the top-scoring team in the conference, but the Falcons (3-4-1, 1-0-1 MAC) allowed Western just seven total shots, and only one shot on goal during the entire 90 minutes.
Goalkeepers Lili Berg and Madison Vukas shared the shutout for the second-straight match and the third time this season. Berg played the first half and did not face a shot on goal, while Vukas made one stop in the second period.Â
Lauren Boafo had three saves for the Broncos.
HOW IT HAPPENED
• The Falcons put three shots on goal in the opening 13 minutes, but then would not put another shot on frame for the rest of the match. Katie Cox took a Lexi Czerwien pass, eluded a Bronco defender with a backheel and fired a shot, but it was hit directly at WMU goalkeeper Lauren Boato.
• Cox found Brynn Gardner with a pass in the ninth minute, and Gardner cut the ball back and hit a shot from the right side of the penalty area, but Boato was able to make the stop. Then, in the 13th minute, Isabelle Gilmore's long free kick sailed over a host of players and toward the goalmouth, but the WMU 'keeper grabbed it on a bounce.
• Midway through the period, Maya Dean made a run after working a combination play with Ellie Pool, but that run was stopped near the end line on the left side.
• With 11 minutes left in the half, Makenzie Ortman came up with a steal in the center of the park and fired a hard shot from distance. the dangerous-looking shot that sizzled over the crossbar.
• Early in the second half, Brynn Gardner took a Rylee Clark pass and eluded several WMU players as she entered the penalty area on the right side. Just as Gardner prepared to fire a shot, a Bronco defender knocked the ball off of her boot. Czerwien fired a shot, but it was blocked and WMU was able to clear the ball out of danger.
• Two minutes later, a right-side cross by Gardner was just out of reach of Pool on the far side of the penalty area.
• With about 26 minutes to go, Cox stole the ball at midfield and BG headed toward the scoreboard end fo the field. Dean hit a cross from the left side, and Brynn Gardner got her foot on the ball before Boato could get to it. The ball was past the WMU 'keeper, but a Bronco player was able to clear the ball out of the box momentarily. Emme Butera lofted the ball back into the penalty area, but an offside call ended the threat.
• The Broncos had a chance with 18 minutes to go, when a right-side cross by Drew Martin sailed over everyone and bounced near the goal line on the far side. It bounced just past the left goalpost and over the end line for a BGSU goal kick.
• With just over two minutes remaining, a Czerwien pass found Brynn Gardner on the right side. Gardner was fouled, but Dean's free kick was headed out of the box. Cox played it back in, and Czerwien got her head on the ball, but Boafo then grabbed it out of the air.
STATS, NOTES & NUMBERS
• Sunday was Senior Day for the Falcons, with no fewer than 10 players recognized in ceremonies prior to the match. That group included Lili Berg, Lacee Bethea, Rylee Clark, Katie Cox, Lexi Czerwien, Maya Dean, Emilie Gardner, Mackenzie Ortman, Ellie Pool and Emma Richardson.
• The match featured a total of just 15 shots, as the Falcons had advantages of 8-7 in total shot attempts and 3-1 in shots on goal.
• Berg and Madison Vukas, as mentioned, combined for the clean sheet. The shutout was BGSU's second in as many matches and third of the season.
UP NEXT
• The Falcons remain at home for a Thursday (Sept. 28) match vs. Akron. First touch is set for 7:00 p.m., and admission is free.
