BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University women's basketball team shot better than 58 percent from the field in every quarter, as the Falcons downed Wittenberg University, 102-47, on Tuesday (Oct. 29). The exhibition, a School Day game, was played before a crowd of over 1,500 fans at the Stroh Center.
BGSU shot 66 percent for the game, making 33-of-50 shots from the floor. All 13 Falcons who saw action scored at least two points in the win.
Erica Porter had a game-high 25 points to pace five double-figure scorers for the Falcons. She was 8-of-12 from the field and a perfect 9-for-9 from the free-throw line. As a team, the Falcons went 31-of-36 (86.1%) from the stripe.
Paige Kohler had 13 points on her birthday, with Amy Velasco and Brook Simpson scoring 11 points apiece and Johnea Donahue chipping in with 10. Donahue had a game-high five steals.
Taya Ellis had eight points and led the Falcons with seven rebounds and four blocked shots.
For the Tigers, Karsen Karlblom had a team-best nine points, with Kelsey Ragan adding eight.
After spotting the visitors the game's first two points, the Falcons scored the next 13. Porter scored seven of those 13 points, beginning with a three-point play just 20 seconds into the contest.
The Tigers got another bucket before Donahue came up with a steal and fed fellow freshman Lauren Gerken for a layup, beginning a 6-0 run. Kohler scored the last four points in that stretch, including a three-pointer.
Wittenberg closed the period on a 9-6 run, capped by Ragan's buzzer-beating three-pointer. But, a Jasmine Fearne triple and an Elllis layup gave the Falcons a 30-13 lead early in the second period, The lead stayed in the teens for the remainder of the quarter, and after a pair of Kendal Moxey free throws, the Falcons took a 45-27 lead into the locker room.
Then, the Falcons scored the first eight points of the third period, and the lead never dropped below 20 points thereafter. A Porter layup just over three minutes into the period upped the BG lead to 30 points for the first time, and when Donahue hit a pair of free throws late in the period, the Falcons' advantage was 35, at 74-39.
After outscoring the TIgers, 29-12, in the third period, BGSU had a 28-8 advantage in the fourth. The Falcons scored the first seven points of the final period, with Simpson's three-point play followed by back-to-back buckets by Laila Harrison.
Freshmen would combine to score the first 18 points of the quarter, with Simpson scoring nine and Harrison eight during that stretch. Another BGSU newcomer, Kristiana Kulackovska, hit a pair of free throws, before Emily Siesel and Taylor Wallace knocked down three-point tries on back-to-back BG trips down the floor. Simpson's steal and layup capped the scoring.
Simpson had 11 points in the fourth period alone, while Harrison was 4-for-4 from the floor in the final quarter.
BGSU held a dominant 42-20 rebounding lead, and the Falcons had a 56-20 lead in points in the paint.
The Falcons will return to the Stroh Center on Monday night (Nov. 4), hosting Southern Miss in the regular-season opener. Tipoff is set for 7:00 p.m.
