Falcons Tally 10th MAC Win Of the Season Behind Efficient Attack

BGSU Secures Ninth Consecutive 10-Win MAC Campaign
OXFORD, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University volleyball team topped the Miami (OH) RedHawks in four sets Friday night (Nov. 1) to advance to 15-8 on the season and 10-2 in MAC play. The Falcons came out strong, hitting .406 in the first set and .435 in the second set. Miami responded to force a fourth set, but Bowling Green held off the effort to claim the 3-1 final. Lauryn Hovey led the BGSU attack with 18 kills while Lindsey LaPinta registered her fifth 20-dig match of the season.

How It Happened
Set 1: Bowling Green 25, Miami (OH) 15
- Amanda Otten began the match behind the service line for the Falcons, landing an ace as part of a 3-0 BGSU run to start the weekend.
- The Falcons and RedHawks played to a 6-4 Bowling Green lead before the Orange and Brown put together a 6-1 stretch, including a 4-0 run. The burst pushed the BGSU lead to 12-5, resulting in a Miami timeout.
- A Bowling Green point out of the timeout made it a 5-0 run and 7-1 stretch with a Miami point closing the run.
- The Falcons quickly started another run, tallying another 4-0 run to bring the stretch to 11-2 with a 17-6 score.
- The lead for Bowling Green extended as far as 12 with a 21-9 advantage. A late 4-0 run for Miami cut into the lead, 21-13.
- Bowling Green responded with a 3-0 run of their own to rebuild the lead to 24-13, closing out the set with a 25-15 after two RedHawk points.
Set 2: Bowling Green 25, Miami (OH) 16
- Bowling Green and Miami alternated points in the early going, playing to a 2-2 score. A pair of points for BGSU, including the second Hovey ace of the match, pushed the Falcons in front 4-2.
- Miami answered with two points of their own to knot it up again at 4-4, resuming the ties that carried to 6-6.
- The Falcons broke the string of ties with a 4-0 run, including the second Otten ace of the night followed by a pair of blocks, granting Bowling Green a 10-6 lead and forcing a Miami timeout.
- The run carried through the timeout for the Falcons, beginning with another block, this one a solo by Alexis Mettille. The run reached 7-0 for Bowling Green with a 13-6 lead.
- BGSU and Miami traded a few points to a 14-8 score with the Falcons tacking on a pair of points, including an ace from Mettille, pushing the lead to 16-8.
- The two teams traded two bursts, but Miami eventually tallied a 3-0 run to trim the lead down to 18-13.
- The Falcons responded with a 6-1 stretch, including a 4-0 run, to extend the lead to 24-14. Miami added two points, but the Falcons claimed the set with a 25-16 score.
Set 3: Miami (OH) 29, Bowling Green 27
- Miami landed the first point of the third set, but the Falcons quickly answered with a 3-0 run, jump started by back-to-back Hovey kills, for a 3-1 lead.
- BGSU and Miami traded points until a 3-0 run for the RedHawks tied the set at 6-6. The Falcons tallied a point, but another two for Miami made it a 5-1 stretch for the RedHawks as well as an 8-7 lead.
- The Falcons tied it at 8-8 with the ties carrying to 10-10. A 5-1 stretch, including a 3-0 run, for BGSU pushed the Falcons back in front with a 13-10 advantage with Miami taking a timeout.
- Coming out of the timeout, Bowling Green kept the pressure on, adding three more points to the run for a 6-0 run, 8-1 stretch and 16-10 lead for the Falcons.
- Miami cut into the deficit with a 3-0 burst, trimming the lead down to 17-14. The Falcons recorded a point, but two more RedHawk points brought the score to 18-16.
- The two teams went back-and-forth until a 3-0 Miami lead cut the score down to 21-20. A kill from Mettille made it a 22-20 score with the second RedHawk timeout.
- Miami tallied two points out of the timeout to tie the score at 22-22 resulting in the first Bowling Green timeout of the night.
- The ties moved to 24-24 after a challenge overturned a BGSU point, forcing extra points in the set. Miami tallied a point for a 25-24 lead, resulting in a Bowling Green timeout.
- The two teams traded points until back-to-back for Miami gave them a 29-27 set score.
Set 4: Bowling Green 25, Miami (OH) 23
- The fourth set began similarly to how the third ended, with the teams trading points in the early going. Miami moved in front 4-2, but a 3-0 BGSU run put the Falcons in front 5-4.
- The RedHawks interrupted the BGSU run with a point, but another two Bowling Green tallies made it a 5-1 run and 7-5 lead.
- Miami answered with a 3-0 run of their own, reclaiming the lead with an 8-7 score. From there, the ties resumed at 8-8, 9-9 and 10-10.
- Bowling Green broke the string of ties with a pair of points, making it a 4-1 stretch and 12-10 lead for the Orange and Brown.
- The RedHawks chipped away to tie the set once again, this time at 13-13. BGSU registered two points in response, taking a 15-13 lead at the media break.
- Each team recorded a point after the media break for a 16-14 BGSU lead with Miami taking a timeout.
- Out of the timeout, the RedHawks recorded a 3-0 run to move in front 17-16, forcing a timeout from the Bowling Green bench.
- The Falcons tallied a 4-1 stretch out of the timeout with a pair of 2-0 bursts separated by a Miami point for a 20-18 lead.
- The RedHawks again battled back, tying the set at 21-21 before moving in front 22-21 with a 3-0 run, resulting in a BGSU timeout.
- Miami added another point after the timeout, but back-to-back Hovey kills tied the set at 23-23 to force a RedHawk timeout.
- Out of the timeout, Hovey landed her third-straight kill followed by a Hovey-Jessica Andrews block to seal the set and match, 25-23.

Falcon Stat Facts
- The Falcons finished the match with a .321 hitting percentage, hitting .300 or better for the third time this season and second consecutive match. It also marks the best hitting percentage by Bowling Green this season in a four-set match.
- In addition to the hitting percentage, the Falcons set new season-bests for a four-set match in kills (63), assists (55) and aces (7) while tying the mark for blocks (13).
- In total, the Falcons had four players who registered 10 or more attacks with an attack percentage of .370 or better, led by Amanda Otten's .636 mark with seven kills on 11 error-free attacks.
- Otten stuffed the stat sheet for the Falcons, recording 45 assists in the match to go along with seven kills, seven digs, four blocks and two aces. Otten is now 45 assists shy of 1,000 for her collegiate career, cutting the difference in half during the match.
- Lauryn Hovey led the way for the Falcons with a season-high 18 kills in the match while maintaining a .371 hitting percentage. Hovey filled the stat sheet with seven digs, five blocks and two aces.
- Hovey's two aces brought her career total to 126 and her season total to 41, moving up a few different lists in the record book. Hovey's career total pushes her up to eighth all-time, passing Carey Amos (1989-92). As for her season total, Hovey is now up to third during the Rally Scoring Era for aces in a single season.
- Alexis Mettille tallied a team-high eight blocks in the match, logging one solo and seven block assists. Mettille's seven block assists brought her career total to 276 pushing her up to fourth during the Rally Scoring Era and 10th on the all-time list.
- Mettille added an ace in the match as well, giving her 85 during her BGSU career. The total puts Mettille inside the Top 10 for the Rally Scoring Era, tying Sam Fish (2007-10) for 10th.
- Lindsey LaPinta topped the stat sheet for BGSU in digs, logging an even 20. The outing is the fifth time this season LaPinta has registered 20+ digs in a match. She added four assists and an ace to her stat line.
- Jessica Andrews was efficient for the Falcons, landing nine kills on 16 attacks with just one error for a .500 hitting percentage. Andrews added five blocks and three digs, matching her season-high.
- Jordan Newblatt and Mia Tyler added to the BGSU attack with Tyler landing 11 kills and Newblatt nine, ranking second and third for the Falcons in the match, respectively.
- Isabelle Laube, Paige Parlanti and Marija Tabak all saw action for the Falcons. Laube tallied an ace for the Falcons while Parlanti landed two kills and Tabak tallied one kill.
- The win for the Falcons marks the 11th-straight against Miami (OH) and the fourth consecutive in Oxford.
- The Falcons are now 10-2 in MAC play, securing at least 10 MAC wins for the ninth consecutive season.
