Senior standout earns second conference honor in as many days
CLEVELAND, Ohio (BGSU Strategic Communications) – Bowling Green State University women's basketball standout Amy Velasco has been named the Mid-American Conference's Female Scholar-Athlete of the Week. The announcement was made by the conference office late Wednesday morning (Nov. 20).
Velasco earns the honor for the first time this season and the second time in her BGSU career.
This is the second conference award in as many days for the senior standout. On Tuesday (Nov. 19), Velasco was named MAC Player of the Week.
Velasco, a native of Centerville, Ohio (Centerville H.S.), led the Falcons in scoring and assists last week, with 25.0 points and 4.5 assists per contest in BGSU's games vs. Cleveland State and St. Bonaventure. The senior guard shot over 60 percent from the field (60.7%), going 17-for-28 in the two games. She hit six of her nine three-point attempts (66.7%) and was a perfect 10-of-10 from the free-throw line on the week.
Velasco had 28 points on the road against preseason Horizon League favorite CSU (Nov. 12), falling just four points shy of her career best. She also had four rebounds and four assists, playing all 40 minutes against the Vikings.
Then, four days later (Nov. 16), Velasco led all players with 22 points and tied for game honors with five assists, as the Falcons recorded the most lopsided win against an NCAA Division-I opponent in BGSU women's basketball history, with a 51-point (92-41) win over St. Bonaventure. She went 7-of-11 from the field, including 2-for-2 from three-point range, in that win.
Velasco is averaging 19.8 points and 3.8 assists per game this season, leading the Falcons in both categories. She is shooting better than 50% from both the field (31-of-59; 52.5%) and the arc (11-of-21; 52.4%), and has hit 26-of-29 (89.7%) free-throw attempts.
In the classroom, Velasco is a physical education & health education major with a perfect 4.000 cumulative grade-point average.
The Scholar-Athlete of the Week Award is presented to one male and one female student-athlete each week. Nominees must maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or better and must have performed well during the previous week's competition. An institution can nominate up to one male and one female student-athlete per week in any of that current season's sports. The winners are selected by a representative of the MAC's Faculty Athletics Representatives (FARs).
Velasco and the Falcons are back in action on Sunday afternoon (Nov. 24), facing nationally-ranked Ohio State in a 1:00 p.m. start at the Schottenstein Center.
