BGSU Falls to Redbirds, Wolverines on Sunday
March 10, 2024 | Softball
Falcons next in action at Notre Dame on Tuesday
Freshman Emma Denison pitched a total of 9/13 innings on the day, firing 164 pitches in the two contests. She threw the final four innings of the ISU game, before making her first collegiate start against the Wolverines.
In the latter game, Denison allowed three runs and seven hits over the first five innings, before U-M broke things open in the sixth.
BGSU-ILLINOIS STATE – HOW IT HAPPENED
• The Redbirds burst out of the starting gates with a pair of five-run innings. In the first inning, after a walk and a single put two runners aboard with one down, ISU came up with four-straight two-out singles, with each hit scoring at least one run.
• The second frame saw the Redbirds again rely on 'small ball' to put together a big inning. A pair of singles and a walk got things started before Abby Knight hit a two-run double down the left-field line. The Falcons got an out at the plate for the inning's second out, but Bella Wilkerson and Ella Boyer each came through with a run-scoring single.
• Another ISU run scored the plate on a single in the third inning, before the Falcons scored three times in the bottom of the frame.
• Kaylee Cole reached on an error, then took third via a groundout and a Reagan Williamson single. A double steal enabled pinch-runner Katie Hutter to take second base with Cole crossing the plate.
• Then, with two outs, Lexi Carver singled to plate Hutter, and after Cameron Kaufman walked, a Peyton Dolejs base hit scored Carver.
• Emma Denison came on in relief to begin the fourth and worked around a two-out walk, and the Falcons got another run in the bottom of the inning.
• Peyton Steffes beat out a bunt, then promptly stole second. From there, she scored easily on a Williamson double.
• BG threatened in the fifth, putting runners at second and third after a Kaufman single and a walk to Dolejs, but the Redbirds escaped the jam. The Falcons again got a runner as far as third base in the sixth, as Steffes walked, stole second and took third on a fly ball. But, Carver's line drive was caught in center to end the inning.
• The Redbirds got a pair of runs in the seventh to cap the scoring.
• Paige McLeod picked up the win in the circle for ISU, while Hannah Meshnick pitched three innings of scoreless relief.
• Denison, the third Falcon pitcher of the game, worked three scoreless frames in just her second collegiate appearance before allowing two runs in the seventh. She gave up four hits in her four innings of work, walking two and striking out three.
• At the plate, Wilkerson was one of five players with a two-hit game for the Redbirds, and she had a game-best three RBI. Julia Larson scored three runs.
• For the Falcons, Williamson was 2-for-3 with a walk, a double and an RBI, while Carver went 2-for-4, scoring a run and driving in a run.
BGSU-MICHIGAN – HOW IT HAPPENED
• After pitching the final four innings of the Illinois State game, Denison made her first collegiate start against Michigan. The Wolverines got on the road with a pair of first-inning runs, again primarily via 'small ball.' U-M had four singles in the inning, with run-scoring hits from Lilly Vallimont and Ella Stephenson.
• Denison faced just one batter over the minimum in the next two innings, allowing a bunt single in the second before setting down the Wolverines in order in the third.
• An Erin Hoehn double in the fourth, however, was followed by Ella McVey's single which sent a pinch-runner to third. An infield error would allow the Wolverines to score an unearned run and make it a 3-0 game.
• Denison worked around a fifth-inning error to retire the next three batters, but Michigan would break the game open in the sixth. Walks proved to be BG's undoing, and Ava Costales came through with a three-run double to give U-M a 6-0 lead. The Wolverines would go on to score two more runs to walk it off.
• In her first collegiate start, Denison allowed just three runs and seven hits over the first five innings, before Michigan broke the game open. On the day, as mentioned, Denison pitched a total of 9/13 innings, throwing 164 pitches.
• U-M's Erin Hoehn, however, threw a six-inning no-hitter. She walked two batters, hit one, and struck out 11.
• Eight different Wolverines had one hit apiece, with Costales delivering a three-run double and Stephenson driving in a pair of teammates.
• Ashley Chevalier and Hannah Hunt each drew a walk in the game, with Addie Martin hit by a pitch.
